I neither profess to understand the Hawaiian language or the culture so I could be off, however I believe it is a tribute song to the royal monarchs of Hawaii (King Kalākaua I) who revived the traditional Hawaiian culture with music and dance.

He was the last reigning king and was nicknamed "The Merrie Monarch"

The other figure mentioned in this song I believe is Liliʻuokalani, the last monarch and only Queen of Hawaii who attempted to restore voting rights to the native Hawiians.
