The Mexican govt... wanting something for nothing... demanding to profit from someone else's hard work... is it part of the culture or what?? But then our govt isn't any better now, especially now, is it...?
@JRAinCA So whats the story on this guy? One of my friends said the Mexican government took the Island away from him. Is this true? I can't find any e-mail to Reishee Sowa so I can confirm the stealing of the Island. Can you help me find out?
Does anyone doubt he´s going to improve this one and add more plants? It's a freakin island made by 1 man using plastic bottles. You can't make that in a day...
Why are you guys hating on his new island? His last one was destroyed in a hurricane and he's in the process of rebuilding it. He's hardly even started the island when this video was taken...
the first island was destroyed by hurricane emily in 2005. he has plans for the second island to see more greenery, and it has been planted but i guess it just hasn't grown fully when this video was taken
Hey, NoJake....Did you watch the other vids on his island? The first one had all kinds of plant life on it. I wonder if they died or some thing? Still is a great idea to make an island out of plastic bottles that would go into a land fill.
I liked the other iland better. WAY more plants. Maybe this is the same iland but the one I saw on RIPLIES was better. But it is cool that he did this all on his own. Wonder if you could do it in the U.S. ?
It looks like the island is more in the earlier stages. The first island had more greenery yes, but it takes some time for it to mature. Really a facinating idea. I wonder if there could be another method that would make the island more permanent and stable, buoyancy wise.
Anyone know why 2 liter soda bottles have expiration dates? 'cause the soda goes "flat" over time (among other reasons)...meaning the Co2 slowly leaks out through the plastic. Sadly, this idea is doomed in the long term, the plastic bottles will "deflate" over time as the air leaks out of them and they are crushed under the weight. I wish it weren't so, but a marvelous plastic bottle island will sink eventually. I've day dreamed about this notion often enough.
The water can't get in the bottles, but it eventually leaks out, the pressure then crushes the bottles and they no longer float. The only real way to solve it would to be add a constant supply of fresh bottles. (swapping out every 6 to 12 months). But then again...as much mt. dew as I drink, I could keep myself afloat FOREVER :-)
I've followed Spiral Island's progress for years & I'd love to learn how it's done. Does the saltwater degrade the plastic? Is it still expanding or is this the final version? It's so different from the first island. I preferred the greenery (mangroves?) on the first island but this new one looks very refined and luxurious by comparison. Is it still his goal to set off to sea? Are there any 2OO9 videos "floating around" (haha) on youtube?
This is one of the grooviest things I've ever seen.
i´d like to know if Richie pays tax for his island. Something like berthing fees, etc. I´d also love to build something like that. Is he going to plant those trees again? It just doesn´t have the same effect as the first island. And wasn´t the whole purpose of the island to become self sufficient?
That's not to say that I don't admire him for all of the work that he has done, but the island has a totally different feel now. It really looked just wonderful before with the mangrove trees, etc. I see another comment here that says the previous island was damaged in a hurricane. If that is what happened then the change is certainly understandable. Regardless, he's an admirable guy who has inspired a lot of people. The world needs more folks like him! Go Richie S.!
I would agree that it would be thee coolest island on the world if it had wind turbine, a solar powered sterling generator that tracks the suns movements, and get this, what if he just added one large\or many cyclodial turbines under the water to convert to some sort of usefull mechanical energy..such as running pumps for waterfalls or washing machine. Then we need to donate Richie a PC and Wifi so he can keep us updated on the growth and life of his creation. Oh buddy!
Exellent job well done Richie! Recycling free materials is great, but now let us harness the free energy the God gave us and kill the fossil tyrants. I see you went solar. Don't forget the wind is in your hair and you need to build a wind generator also to keep a bank of batteries full. Now let's give that island a Boost! Check out the "Perendev Magnetic Motor" and build a paddle wheel to move your "Paradise" anytime, anywhere, for free! I would like to meet and visit you someday! I'm in Tampa.
I have been following the progress of both islands for years. Thank you for the wonderful video update. I haven't been so excited about a video ever. I am always pondering building my own island. I am a huge fan! Go Richie! Don't ever stop!

The last island had trees and plants and tons of pets and...it looked homey.
This one is some sort of tourist abomination. Horrible.

@VideoNoob22 that's because the mexican government claimed it as their land, and basically forced it to become a tourist atteaction

@VideoNoob22 Considering the other one was years in development and this one is rather new, I'd say give it time.

stuff the bottles full of recycled Styrofoam...? Then it wouldn't matter if water seeped in and it would make use of even for trash! :p
