This all makes sense, on paper, yet what about the socio-cultural aspects of gangs in the inner city being the only out for "some"? Not condoning it, but if you have scant choices then the gang may be seen as the only option. I am by know means justifying, just making a point.

i disagree with the first point that the protection element doesn't exist in gangs. the fear of 'retaliation after the fact' serves as a form of protection from possible attack. the bigger you appear, the less likely a smaller gang will attack; like nuclear armament escalation between post war usa and russia.
