@zenitius the reason for that has nothing to do with cuemanship(or lack of it), nor does it concern table & pocket dimensions... we just don't like the game. balls with point values, the re-spotting if red balls remain, the nerdy dress code,etc.... fact is, if snooker were played on a 9-ball table, i still would prefer 8, 9, 10-ball & straight 14.1. that goes for many folks i know as well. why compare F1 to motocross, or NFL to rugby, or squash to raquetball? less talkin & more chalkin !!!
@jdbankshot You are looking at it from an 'entertainment' point of view. But, snooker is difficult to play. Even good pool players who have a fairly consistent pot rate have difficulty racking up a high score. I have no problem with pool. Just with people saying that pool is better than snooker or some shit like that. Well, at least no one can deny the fact that pool is a 'reduced' and 'dumbed down' form of billiards made for easy playing.
@ToothyGus i can deny it & will. in my experience, there are far more snooker snobs than pool snobs. read my post to zenitius from 3 months ago... my entire motivation for this & many other ytube posts has always been that we're all cuemen & women.... why the need to attempt to assert some sort of superiority? small peckers, perhaps? billiards, in all forms, fuckin rocks. that's all. but look around on ytube, can't watch a classic 9-ball match without some fool insulting the game...
@ToothyGus btw, i've never looked at "it" as entertainment... it's a training tool, used for study. o'sullivan, davis, etc. have not fared too well in 9-ball, that's a fact. tell THEM it's reduced or dumbed down. what you fail to realize is that your opinion suggests that snooker was the ONLY intention of the pioneers. it's like a concert pianist saying rock n roll isn't music. also, consider geography. it just isn't that popular over here. maybe snooker promoters just don't care. ask them.
@jdbankshot ok. the reason why pool is so popular and why you won't find snooker tables at most pubs is because pool is simple to play and doesn't require a lot of time and active effort. And dont compare rock n roll with classical music. Many genres of rock music require a lot of technicality and are far more difficult to play than formulaic classical music.Maybe a lot of top snooker players aren't that good at pool at competitive levels but I haven't seen a single pool player in snooker tourneys
@ToothyGus i agree with you on the music, 100%. but i believe you knew that already, hence the comparision of not the music itself, but the hoidy-toidy attitudes and opinions of some people. you don't see 8, 9, 10-ball players in snooker cuz WE JUST DON'T LIKE THE GAME AS MUCH. nothing to do with dimensions of table & pocket. as far as pool being simple, it isn't exactly simple to master...but my whole point always was, SO WHAT? we're all on the same team. let's shoot, no matter which game.
@jdbankshot thats completely untrue that pool players dont like snooker, take some of the best players like mika immonen or efren reyes and apparantley they're brilliant snooker players. btw i dont want to sound cocky or anything but im only 16, and have been playing for under 3 years and i often beat most of the adults in my area, some of whom have been playing for forty years or so. pool isnt exactly difficult, but either way i agree with you, we should just enjoy whatever games we enjoy
@ToothyGus btw, i play in real poolhalls, not pubs with a couple 3.5ft by 7ft bar box tables. the places i play at could have snooker tables, but no one enjoys it around here. i know for a fact that if i take the best 8-ball player that plays on a 3.5 by 7, & take him to my poolhall to play 9-ball on a 4.5 by 9, he would suck. i know that. but i don't talk about it or put their game down. put me on a snooker table, & i'll need some adjustment time to say the least & i know that... but so what?
for all you snooker fans out there i'd like you to start paying attention at 5:50. if snooker is so great and 9-ball is so easy then why does ronnie foul on an easy kick shot? it's because each game has it's own difficulties and hurdles to get over. one isn't better than the other, they are both great games and until you have mastered both you should just quit typing
@kindguy420 because cushions on an american pool table square off a lot more than cushions on a snooker table. Once you learn the new angles, there's not much more to it
@tfn105 If the cushions are in good condition it doesnt matter. The angles are always the same if the table is twice as long as it is wide. (basic geometry) The angle changes depending on stroke speed and spin. (basic knowledge) I believe what kindguy420 was referring to is that snooker players don't have a good understanding of kicking, banking, and diamond systems. If anyone disagrees, please tell me where I can see a top snooker player win a billiards match against a top 3-cushion player.
@bird80 I realise that the angle of incidence should be the angle of reflection, but in practice that is just not the case. I can only assume it's because the manufacturing methods for snooker and (in particular) American pool tables differ. I do play on both (although, I'm a snooker player more so), and have experienced the difference first hand.
To be honest, you get quite a bit of variation even from snooker table to snooker table.
@tfn105 I agree, but as long as you have a firm grasp of diamond systems you can adjust to any table you play on. Provided, of course that all the rails on a given table play the same. Before competition on an unfamiliar table, I like to shoot a couple of 1-rail kicks to the corner, then some 3-rail kicks. Once I know how the table is banking (a diamond short or long or whatever) i can make adjustments from there and hit my kicks. Hard to do that on a snooker table--no diamonds.
@tfn105 i know what u r talking about, but the things that makes incidence and the angle of reflection different depends on how hard u hit the cue ball and also if u hit low high or middle on the cue ball, the angle will vary, hope this helps
I hate Stricklands attitude, he is a horrible person (despite being an amazing player), I also think Ronnie is fantastic but his fans in this were pathetic and unsporting towards strickland.
Strickland, whatever else one may think of him, is right: there's a difference between cheering for one's favourite, and misbehaviour towards his opponent.
o sullivan and hendry r 2 different players all together ronnie has the most natural ability u will ever see but hendry had the drive and will to win if ronnie had the right head he would have ruled the game and still would have today hope he wins world title this year but i doubt it mark williams is the man to watch
AntiFanBoy1 botish fool he has already reached that level, open ur eyes full of shit.. I´d like to see ur ass next to the biliard tabe...wow u rally made me angry, dumbass
These British fans are ridiculous. HEY GUYS LET'S SCREAM WHEN RONNIE COMES TO THE TABLE! LET'S SCREAM EVEN LOUDER WHEN HE MAKES A HANGER!
Seriously. There's fans for both sides, but show some decency and quit the screaming. The players are trying to concentrate and all the stupid screaming makes life difficult for them.
@SnareBuff "These British fans are ridiculous". Why do some individuals simply have to resort to snide comments involving nationality? There is a perfect explanation for your dilemma - perhaps you have to come to terms with the fact that Ronnie is a far more supported and lucrative player than Earl Strickland is. Snooker, afterall, is a far more difficult, tactical and interesting game than pool.
@Reghander I'll agree with you in one way, Ronnie is very much supported more than Strickland. Earl makes it a point to piss everyone off with his poor sportsmanship and complete lack of respect. Earl is a very easily angered player, and will often times reflect that anger in his playing. Earl is undoubtedly a great player, but his attitude is a huge drawback of his.
@Reghander And back again to the idiotic debate of two different games. I've lost the desire to argue with you nuthugging snooker fans and just suffice it to say that there's no way of making any of you think any differently than you already do. Nothing I say, or anyone else for that matter, will make any of you come off this superiority attitude that you all have. The only thing I'll say is that if you believe snooker is superior, you need to go back to the basics.
@Reghander And let me elaborate on one thing you've quoted me on. I said the British fans were ridiculous because nearly every time Ronnie came to the table, made a shot, or even made a hanger, there was all sorts of screaming. They were even screaming and cheering during the lag. THE FUCKING LAG: one of the most important parts of any match. Also, when Strickland was shooting the 4 ball, a fan in the audience (a BRITISH fan) yelled "GET OUT" as it was going in the pocket.
@Reghander Strickland was absolutely right whenever he said "I'm not gonna tolerate this again." There's no reason for that to be said by ANY fan from ANY country supporting ANY player. I'm not "resorting to snide comments about nationality", I was merely saying the British fans there to support Ronnie (My assumption is that they are British. It's to-may-toe to-mah-toe, get over it) are ridiculous in their screaming and cheering.
@Reghander Cuesports are games of intense concentration and focus. Whenever you have fans from ANY country or nationality (including Americans) being loud and/or rude, that is a complete lack of respect and consideration for the players involved. I guarantee that if the American fans there supporting Strickland were yelling and whatnot, the Ronnie supporters would be all in a riot and calling the Americans pigs and all sorts of names. Self-righteous hypocritical bullshit.
i could play in this atmosphere easy cuz im used to playing where theres a bar full of assholes talking at the top of there fucking lungs about everything besides pool so this would be CAKE!!!
British fans are the best around, if you can't perform with an atmosphere you don't belong in any sport. If anything a player should enjoy it, look at ronnie.
One keeps wondering, though, why audiences misbehave like this at billiards tournaments, and during televised matches, too. Can't people like that find just themselves another sport? ;^)
