For the humans I think it was just another night; certainly in Bethlehem things were so busy that people were just trying to find someplace to sit down and rest from all the hoopla surrounding the census (rather like the modern Christmas rush).
But as far as the rest of nature, I fully believe there was eager anticipation, and I wonder if the sheep ran ahead of the shepherds to get to the stable.

They still play this song on the radio. There is a station (89.5 KVNE) that I sometimes listen to on the computer that plays it during Christmas.
