Dave I'm a huge fan and I'm 11 and would love for you to give me some advice for bow making I've tried over five and they have all cracked I've used hickory, maple, cedar, pine, oak, and I tried poplar but I quite on it because it wasn't doing to good. But again big fan of you love your show dual survival and just wondered what I can do to make a better bow because I'm currently trying to seasona piece of hickory its been in my closet for aboute 2 months now.
@blademiffy i too am a young bow maker and one of two things and one that works is when you cut your staff thin the staff down about a 1/2 inch larger than you want your bow to be and then weigh it to see how much it weights write that down and every day weight it and as soon as it stops loosing weight for about 5 days finish your bow for shooting and when you string it gradually draw the string about an inch at a time
Watching videos like this makes me proud to be an American. Whether or not you're American, you should learn to do things like this. These are, after all, the jobs that your ancestors did.
im relatively new to survival stuff but i am facinated by it. i was just wondering what the best types of axes are to start with carving not just for bows but for all the survial things like shelters and stuff so a good multi-purpose axe
what are some good woods for a self bow around south western ohio because i really want to make one but i dont know how to identify different woods or anything. so really i want to know what kind and where it is. thanks
@rjken1983 Get a book from your local conservation department, it will most likely tell you everything you need to know about native trees in your area. I have one called "Trees of Missouri" by Don Kurz.
@DestroyToThrash yeah, but i think most people are going to have a hard time hunting anything with a lance/spear in a survival situation if they're not expert hunters.
that stave you were working on was almost perfect shame it was too short.never seen such a perfect heart wood,i guess its yew .correct me if im wrong.the bark dont look like yew but hey wtf do i know, good work man .
Thanks for the eye bolt idea! thats awesome, going to look for one first thing tomorrow. Just outof curiousity though, I've made a number of bows out of cured wood as well as green. With the green i havent been able to get a 5 foot bow to pull more than 30 lbs though. Going to try again soon i think...
Dave - True in most aspects with the shorter bow , it is more difficult to build a heavy draw weight with such limited and small dimensions . But once again the rule of brittle or shorter bows should be followed to get not only a high draw weight , but a stable bow that won't fail from compression or tension - wide and thin . That piece of cherry could 've had wide ( 2 3/4 - 3.5 inches ) and thin limbs for a efficient design but width adds power so all in all you have a powerful short weapon .
sweet vid brother, some good idea's i'm thinkin the vice grips just gotta be a part of the bush tool kit from now on, i would almost (but wont) give up my leatherman for the vg's,if only they made a woodsman leatherman with locking pliers
Be careful not to put hands in splitting when working with wedges. if you accidentally bump into wedge, and it comes off, your fingers will be squished. Its in fact ancient torture technique, performed on fingers and other fine extremities.
Great vid as usual. Good info on starting out on making a bow, especially for those of us who have never made our own bow, but would like to. Look forward to this series!
I have found that a triple layered leather shop apron is ideal when tilling a bow. I have tilled 4 bows in my lifetime, along with making about a dozen bundle bows, so my word is not the say all end all on this. I am speaking from my experience. Always use caution and wear the proper P.P.E. when using sharp tools.
To the fireman...good tip with the eye bolt..on the bench drills I had swapped hex head machine screws for the knurled headed round bolts as the hex head were bigger and easier to use..but the eye bolts are even better..nice one!!
thanx dave im looking forward to the finished product! quick question. does keeping the heartwood and sapwood on the bow equate to a better stronger bow altogether? or is it best to just use the heartwood or sapwood? i heard that the heartwood is stronger but it breaks easier, and the sapwood is more durable...
@tzDub92 Funny you say that, i just got back from doing that exact thing a few days ago. Also, learn how to spell simple words before you talk trash, bitch.
@recurveninja haha wow dude. Just so YOU know, "ur" is short for "your". Proper spelling isn't typically required on youtube except by douchebags who have nothing better to do than mouth off to someone (Dave in this instance) who has their own freaking tv show about what how much cooler UR bow is than his.
I was wondering? couldn't you have used this piece of wood like yew? with a sap and heart wood combo? then you'd get the most out of the wood and have a extremely powerful bow?
The Heart wood would make a fine bow but you would be hard pressed to get to just that and have a stable bow this short, so a combo will be much better. Thanks man.
yeah, I heard of the stability problems with using only heartwood, high compression resistance, making it prone to break if made or used incorrectly(making it to the wrong dimensions or overdrawing the bow).
that's why I was asking, since it would be strange to make one out of only heartwood.
If it were any metal axe besides an estwing I would get a wood handle axe, because you can replace a broken handle. But I could afford an estwing axe I would pick it over any other axe ever made, The handle will never come off,EVER.
Did u get a new vid camera? Very nice clean picture/vid. Thanks for all the effort and for sharing Dave. You gave given me the confidence to try my hand at making a survival bow.
I've tried hard to sharpen one like that but I never succeeded. Axes that are available locally are not as good as the one you have. I'll try to save some money and get one, that edge is amazing!
There are a pile of vids on here on tips and tricks to shapen a blade. One you get the edge right there is one which uses varying grits of sand paper clamped over a mouse pad which really puts a fine edge on non perfectly linear edges.

To any body who reads this. Which is better to buy, a compound bow or make a recurve bow
Survivaloutdoorsman 1 month ago
@Survivaloutdoorsman Its a matter of preference a compound will let you aim longer but a lot of people prefer the feel of a recurve

@Survivaloutdoorsman i would pick neither i would make a California style bow look it up but if you don't like that i would pick a recurve bow
