Jen - let me tell you that quite a few of my "YouTube Homies" have successfully applied for YT partnership lately, but I'm refusing for exactly the same reasons: I strongly dislike this advertisment and autoplay stuff. And, besides that, this would perhaps give me publicity I'd not be willing to accept lightly - like lifting me out of my Web 2.0 niche of anonymity. No - no partnership for me, at least for now.

Just get the open source Firefox plug-in AdBlockerPlus. It requests content from embedded non-YouTube servers but then doesn't display it on your page. So the Ad's think they are getting eyes and they still pay, and every one's happy.

I want to be taken seriously when the topic of my video is serious. How would it look to be making a video on atheism while an ad for Dianetics appeared at my side? Or doing one of my flora videos with an ad for an ATV? I prefer to keep doing what I'm doing without the distraction of advertising.

I'm not a partner but I did use a song in one video without permission and instead of removing it I have adverts on the video. I think that's OK, it's kinda like if you can't beat them join them. UMG make all the money from adverts not me, but I get to keep my video uploaded.

I really hate ads that disrupt videos, and actually avoid a lot of partner videos because of that, minus a few I was a fan of before they became partners.

Perhaps the worst are the on-screen ads on television shows advertising OTHER television shows. I have no idea what the point of doing that is, other than to give people ADD and annoy them. If I'm watching a show, I want to WATCH THE SHOW, not see some moving, noisy graphics advertising ANOTHER SHOW!!!!!!

True, true indeed...The internet is still such uncharted territory in many ways, too, working these things out is very much a new frontier. As someone else said, I don't really hate ads at the side of the screen, but in-video just ruins it for me. I watch DVDs more often than television because I hate ads. The trick is if you put a few extensions on firefox you don't even have to see the adverts.  I didn't realize how obnoxious they were until accidentally using IE.
