Song from your childhood? This tune is from my childhood too, and I have to say that you look a good bit younger than I do. Ah well, that is of no consequence. I enjoy your play, well done!
WOW great stuff, i have been playing for a few months and sometimes i wanna give up, but when i see this it makes me want to practice even more....EXCELLENT work, are you on TALKBASS? you are a really good player.....thanks for sharing, and i am glad that there are some self taught players out there that can really play, again thanks for some great playing.
@ladyamythyst69, I'm using whatever strings came on the bass. I never change strings unless one breaks, then I change the set. I really don't care what strings I use. That's just me.
I'm using a Fender 400 pro amp with two 10s and a horn. I really like my amp.
Good luck on your new Decade. It's a very unique bass, great sound.
Nice cover, and I wanted to ask, how do you like your Lakland in comparison to your MM and P bass? Youtube videos aren't the best for comparing sound, and no shops around me carry the Decade or any other Laklands.
One of the greatest basslines in any song imo. After months of playing the bass i still cant touch this one, well that goes for most of the Jackson 5 songs.
Good job. I was just wondering how you like the Lakland Decade Bass? I am thinking about buying one but I can't seem to find any sound samples being played pick style.
You know, I've been trying to learn this song with limited success for years. I never made any real progress until I found your video. Thanks so much, I think I've got it!
I've listened to quite a few people 'having a go' at covering bass lines on youtube and I think you play so much clearer than any of the others....wonderful!
So we go way back lol, how about "Streetlife" and throw in some "Barry white basslines just ta sweetn thing's up, love watching you play nothing like oldschool, I never mastered pop and slap, but fingerstyle will never die! thank's my Sister and that's a real complement cause I'm a old Black Cat! lol
Play that bassline......THAT IS SWEET! Ive been wantin to learn bass. I already am a drummer and did play cello...but quit. And I can do a little bit on piano...at least to know the notes go from A to G and start at A again etc....But this is sweet!
Hey there, you're a great bass player and I'm trying to learn this song by watching you (rewind/replay) it. Is your guitar tuned down a half step? Although the first note you play is a G# ( heavy E, 4th fret), it sounds like a G...
Niiice! One of my all time favorite bass lines. And one of the more involved lines to come out of Motown. Wilton hooked this one up! This song is the first song the Jacksons recorded West Coast. Joe Sample (a fellow Crusader member) played keys on this too.
I love this and you other post on " stop the love you save". I play keyboard and came across your video while trying to figure out the bass line. I hear it so clear. You are a beast girl! Keep it up!!
and you don't have to stretch your left hand to place one-finger-per-fret! (guitar fingering) upright bassists use a comfortable fingering method. also playing open strings (open position) will make you regret that you never started sooner! and if you have the cash, find a teacher just for position lessons.
Hi CJL, with respect I think the one finger per fret style is in fact best for electric bass & most pro players adopt this style (lots of examples here on YouTube), the "three finger" method you mention is used by upright players largely because the force needed to fret the notes requires the third finger to press down on top of the pinkie for extra support, this is not required with electric bass.
Also, open strings are great but in certain keys not an option, as in this example which is in Ab
i tried to let KatBeee know that there are alternatives available to her. if i had small hands in comparison to a regular scale electric bass, i would certainly purchase a small scale bass such as a Mustang and enjoy it. (actually i would save up and have one custom made for my hands, but i'm foolish on this).
because the third and fourth fingers share a tendon, overstretching can develop into serious inflammatory issues or severe tendonitis as time goes on requiring medication or surgery. one way is to position the thumb with respect to the centerline and pivot the hand to cover four frets. like Wes M. using his thumb vs plectrum or Chet A. wrapping his thumb over the fretboard there's many ways to skin a cat.
and a small hand could "mine" the open string position which works great for most keys, using different fingerings. in fact there's a lot of music in the "money section" (first 5 frets)! i'm not on a mission, but i hope is that those with smaller hands "size" their instrument, use a comfortable fingering, avoid RSI, and get started!
OMG! U Are Tooo REAL!! Im an up and coming bass player.... i wanna just like u when i grow up. (im already 17) Lol... Ur Better Than My "Teacher" Lol... Whats ur name?

LilGuhAirEe 1 year ago
@LilGuhAirEe Thanks for the kind compliment.
I'm self taught too.
The best advice anyone ever gave me was to use my pinky until it felt as strong as my other fingers.
I know at first it's difficult because it feels weak, but stick with it.
That has really helped me to move around the fretboard with confidence.

good but u need to turn the gain down a bit
rickshaw35 2 years ago
its not gain i dont think, its just the way the camera picked up the sound
TimTehPilot 2 years ago
You're right Tim,
The distortion is probably caused by the camera's mic.
I'm just using an old Sony DCR-TRV340 to pick up the sound.
I think it did a pretty good job considering how much low end it had to handle.
