Its a way to show a deadly sin (greed), so in some way johnny cant win (lose devil gets his soul and if he would win the devil gets his soul after he died). But after Johnny wins and refuses the golden fiddle he shows that he is "incorruptible".

that's not the devil for a few reasons:

1) They mention at the beginning he NEEDS TO MEET A SET QUOTA or he gets in trouble.

2) He sucks at playing the fiddle by himself. Seriously take out the back-up band, he sucks.

3) After Johnny wins he just proclaims Johnny's won and doesn't do shit to twist the outcome to his favor. He just gets up and says you win. He doesn't say I win and steal Johnny's soul regardless, No this devil works on the HONOR SYSTEM!
