  • magistral.

  • After listening to a recording of her, I never get to enjoy any other recording made of that same piece. No other cellist ever comes close to her magnificent interpretation. It's simply perfect.

  • Awesome and beautiful ! Thanks for the sharings !

  • BEAUTIFUL!! CONGRATULATIONS TO HER!

  • The most beautiful movement of the cello concerto in the entire Classical period. And of course, the most beauitul performer in the 20th century.... Everybody misses you Jackie!

  • I think 4:58 is an amazing point

  • Leaves me speechless. <3

  • Rostopovich can live 3 more of his life time, but still can't match her

  • @terrygowork I disagree -at last halfway at any rate. I think du Pre is clearly superior in the first movement, Rostropovich in this one. Though I'll freely grant Rostropvich edges her out by a narrower margin in this third movement than she him in the first. The first movement isn't even a close call for me.

  • No one has ever comes close to her, and never will, in my opinion. What she could done if her life hadn't been cut short by MS.

  • The best cellist in the history or not, she's my favourite one :)

  • How could anyone 'dislike' this? Generally I prefer Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart et al. played on period instruments but this version (I think it's Barenboim conducting) is simply amazing

  • powerful, sweet... yet manages to show virtuosity at a tempo just under Presto. I saw many on youtube failed to adhere and played faster instead.

  • I have heard Rostropovich. I have heard Yo-Yo-Ma. I have heard Hanna Chang. But I have never heard anything so powerful, so ingenious, so spontaneous, and so articulated as Jacqueline DuPre's. This is why Jacqueline DuPre is a legend.

  • @waistoi same story here lol

  • Paired with Haydn, this is heavenly music

  • she is the best cellist of history

  • she was born at saint on the cello god bless here soul for eternity !

  • This isnt the first movement..... this is the third.....

  • Simply wonderful, in every sense

  • My lord, this is the most accurate, beautiful, artistic version I have ever heard.

  • wow, I really like it. I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of modern music... it's fast and makes you feel free and full of energy. It was modern in those times when this was written.

  • Joy of life. Serenity of fair music.

  • Jacqueline's extremely unique style shines through beautifully...!

  • My best love. Wonderful feeling in the music.

  • i know, l love this song, it always cheers me up =]

  • R.I.P

  • BODY,HEART AND SOUL !

  • Bellisimo, me encanta, J d P hace cantar el cello, se comunica con el, es tan grande pues realmente busca que cada frase sea distinta, diga algo distinto. No se encontraran interpretaciones como estas. La adoro!

  • du pre is comparible with rostropovich for this one

  • superior in every way.

  • 1:52-1:60

  • magnificent superb wonderful exhilerating spirit enhancing joy giving superlatives run dry...............

  • Puts me at a total loss...I just love it.

  • Wow, I followed the score as she was playing... she did not miss a beat... its really amazing...... Sure there a lots of great recordings..... and I appreciate all of them.... but am amazed of her artistry...really impressive.... !

  • This is such a difficult piece...but so rewarding.

  • Im 16 and Im just learning this piece! Im soo excited!

  • im 14 and im half way done

  • She is my favorite, the ultimate cellist. Yo-Yo is a yoyo compared to her! This is true artistry Not narcissism.

  • Yo Yo is an artist of the highest calibre...my vote goes to J d P but would not want to understate YYM's artist

  • @catharticartist1 I'm not a big admirer of Yo Yo Ma, but if you think he's any kind of narcissist your psychological acuity is highly suspect.

  • Simply unbelievable! Such a great mastery by J. du Pre. Incredible ability to let the cello to speak with the human voice.

  • I was just thinking the same thing..usually I have issues when people refer to these works as "songs" but they may well be correct in this case because that cello is indeed singing

  • Enjoyed it. Thanx

  • "song" arrived along with MP3 - you download songs. They used to be called "tracks". I bet it correlates well with age.

  • Ah--I catch your drift! I was sort of headed in a different direction but you have an interesting thought. I was just thinking that people freak out when people mistakenly call a Suite, Piece, Work Symphony a "song" and there will often be someone who will correct them on it--but not everyone has taken orchestra, band, or music classes--I am just happy they are listening to this glorious music and I was pointing out that indeed, here this cello is engaged in SONG! :)

  • very rhythmic almost, some parts brilliant. not sure now feel about it overall personally, but i think Jacqueline is one of the greatest musicians. She really epitomizes the meaning of the word, her passion and of music is SO evident in her playing.

  • 5:14 best point in the concerto

  • i agree, i loooove that part.

  • awesome....

  • @wykowski duh

  • @wykowski What about 3:21 ?

  • it is wonderful!! But I want to try protect Yo-Yo Ma,he dont do show, and he is not show-offyy as somebody wrote before..this is his natural style and he plays everything in very sincere way and i love Yo-Yo Ma! But this is my own opinion..But Du Pre play great and she is one of greatest cellist ever!

  • I also like Yo-Yo Ma's style in the Allegro Molto, but in the Moderato, his playing is not as good as Du Pré's.

  • What about Han Na Chqng?

  • clarity + energatic. Nice

  • Yes, yes yes yes....this is the one. Clarity, not scratchy, and almost every note is audible. Absolutely wonderful. Her bow technique is amazing as well. There are several times throughout the movement you don't even hear the beginning of the note, it simply materializes out of nowhere.

  • just incredible!

  • Oh my good!!!!! This is the best execution of this cello concerto I have ever heard... and I think that better can t be

  • It doesn't get any better than this.

  • one of the best cellists of all time!

  • chills!! >_> too good for my mind to comprehend!!! must go sob and practice...

  • About editing technology...its not possible to edit in musicality, energy, or clarity. All of which she has. In my opinion, Du Pre delivers the best rendition of Haydn C III there is. Rostropovitch is the original master, but from then we've evolved and even aspiring cellists are able to technically play equavilant to him. He still deserves credit for his great contributions, such as bringing the Bach suites "back" but let us be thankful we've evolved

  • energy and clarity. wow.

  • i love the yo-yo ma video of this movement, but listening to this just now, du pre's version gave me the chills. it's too bad that there is no live performance to go along with the audio.

  • I think yo-yo ma tries too hard when he plays this kind of works, he's much better with other things thoug.

  • yea someone who thinks like me. Yo yo ma is too show-offyy(new word lol)

  • So unforgetable !!!...thank you !!!. Cheers!!!, ~Sergio.

  • I do not get how this is difference from Ma or Rostropovich, yet i can tell which is which in the first few seconds of the solo.

  • The best cellist !EVER!

  • no but she was amazing

  • @atuckler That can´t be. She plays very well but she isn´t the best cellist ever!

  • I love this song! It's one of my favorites! :D

& she is the best cellist!

  • When I listened to this it made me sad, while listening to Rostro just inspires me and makes me want to practice

  • When I listened to this it made me sad, while listening to Rostro just inspires me and makes me want to practice

  • Concerto "curatissimo" di una grande Cellista che avrebbe potuto regalarci tante emozioni.

  • personally, I'm a fan of Rostropovich. His tone quality is so clear and he is still able to portray great emotion. I do agree he rushes this movement of this piece.

du Pre is still a great cellist. She's my cello teacher's idol, so I can't help but respect her a great deal.

  • ah, but you also have to remember modern technology.

Back when JDP and earlier recordings of Rostropovich, you could hear mistakes.

Now, they have ways of editing those out, so that performances sound flawless.

  • @pbaron23: i agree...i think for example han-na chang played it better. but jaqueline du pré is a real...yes...she's a godness...i like her playing...i'm loving it...

  • to me han-na changs version is so dry. it is so rushed that you never have anytime to comprehend the music because it goes by so fast

  • dwil: What do you think about Rostropovich? Man, he played this movement so fast but it still sounded marvelous to me. I mean, it was completely different from Du Pre's and that's why I love his interpretation as well.

  • i really rostropovich's interpetation. i really enjoy the power he brings to it even though it is faster.

  • I think of Rostropovich as someone who impresses the crowd with his skill while du Pre fills the crowd with her emotion for every piece she plays. No matter what playing style these musical legends my have though, they will always have a place in our hearts.

  • i find that Chang plays most of these complex pieces with dead on accuracy, BUT she doesnt put any feeling into the pieces most of what she plays is dry. as far as rostropovich, i believe he played it too fast, i feel like his notes blend together at times, which takes away from the clarity

  • i would take rostropovich over chang any day.

  • oo i completely agree i was just saying that he gets a little fuzzy at times but by no means does chang even compare to him

  • however du Pre beats both of them out hands down

  • with this movement, you mean. overall as a cellist i can't decide between rostropovich, du pre, and yo yo ma =P

  • Hey for all I agree Jaqueline Du Pré was a werry good, and alsow a romantic cellist. ButSory I have to tell you guys, she didn't played well this concerto because she played too much romantic! and not just I say this, (a lot of people) ( but it sounds good, but it isn'ta good preformance of she) She played well the rommantic music, like Elgar, or Saint Seans :)

    bye now

  • I wouldn't say that. It's just a different interpretation than Rostropovich or Yo yo ma or any other cellist.

  • i disagree i find that romantic elements she used to play this concerto really make it live. i heard people play this concerto through with no feeling or vigor that this concerto needs (including myself) just relying on techinique. for example han-na chang. this first time i have ever heard this concerto not rushed

  • i completely agree with you, if you listen to rostropovich he plays this way to fast and it takes away from the emotion of the piece

  • i feel that compared to Ma and Rostropovich the way that she plays this is both unique and better in that with her style of romanticism you can really hear each individual note rather than playing it at a much faster tempo where the individual note would be much less important and rather the effect of the whole is emphasized

  • shes the best cellist ive ever heard

  • I love this, because it's not rushed at all, and the rhythmic intensity is fantastic! Probably the best interpretation I've heard of this so far =)

  • whew...energetic...

  • how old are you? she died.and she is angel cellist

  • 44, "graduate" of religion. My mission is to find the dead and bring them to the mainstream of life as we know it.

  • Jacqueline, you will forever be my darling in my mind.

  • she is nice in person i met her

  • Lucky. My private teacher went to see her once when she played the Elgar concerto with the Boston Symphony. I don't think she'll ever forget.

  • My dear friend, that was good!

  • i really like her interpretation it is straight forward but yet very unique.
