After listening to a recording of her, I never get to enjoy any other recording made of that same piece. No other cellist ever comes close to her magnificent interpretation. It's simply perfect.
The most beautiful movement of the cello concerto in the entire Classical period. And of course, the most beauitul performer in the 20th century.... Everybody misses you Jackie!
@terrygowork I disagree -at last halfway at any rate. I think du Pre is clearly superior in the first movement, Rostropovich in this one. Though I'll freely grant Rostropvich edges her out by a narrower margin in this third movement than she him in the first. The first movement isn't even a close call for me.
How could anyone 'dislike' this? Generally I prefer Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart et al. played on period instruments but this version (I think it's Barenboim conducting) is simply amazing
I have heard Rostropovich. I have heard Yo-Yo-Ma. I have heard Hanna Chang. But I have never heard anything so powerful, so ingenious, so spontaneous, and so articulated as Jacqueline DuPre's. This is why Jacqueline DuPre is a legend.
wow, I really like it. I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of modern music... it's fast and makes you feel free and full of energy. It was modern in those times when this was written.
Bellisimo, me encanta, J d P hace cantar el cello, se comunica con el, es tan grande pues realmente busca que cada frase sea distinta, diga algo distinto. No se encontraran interpretaciones como estas. La adoro!
Wow, I followed the score as she was playing... she did not miss a beat... its really amazing...... Sure there a lots of great recordings..... and I appreciate all of them.... but am amazed of her artistry...really impressive.... !
I was just thinking the same thing..usually I have issues when people refer to these works as "songs" but they may well be correct in this case because that cello is indeed singing
Ah--I catch your drift! I was sort of headed in a different direction but you have an interesting thought. I was just thinking that people freak out when people mistakenly call a Suite, Piece, Work Symphony a "song" and there will often be someone who will correct them on it--but not everyone has taken orchestra, band, or music classes--I am just happy they are listening to this glorious music and I was pointing out that indeed, here this cello is engaged in SONG! :)
very rhythmic almost, some parts brilliant. not sure now feel about it overall personally, but i think Jacqueline is one of the greatest musicians. She really epitomizes the meaning of the word, her passion and of music is SO evident in her playing.
it is wonderful!! But I want to try protect Yo-Yo Ma,he dont do show, and he is not show-offyy as somebody wrote before..this is his natural style and he plays everything in very sincere way and i love Yo-Yo Ma! But this is my own opinion..But Du Pre play great and she is one of greatest cellist ever!
Yes, yes yes yes....this is the one. Clarity, not scratchy, and almost every note is audible. Absolutely wonderful. Her bow technique is amazing as well. There are several times throughout the movement you don't even hear the beginning of the note, it simply materializes out of nowhere.
About editing technology...its not possible to edit in musicality, energy, or clarity. All of which she has. In my opinion, Du Pre delivers the best rendition of Haydn C III there is. Rostropovitch is the original master, but from then we've evolved and even aspiring cellists are able to technically play equavilant to him. He still deserves credit for his great contributions, such as bringing the Bach suites "back" but let us be thankful we've evolved
i love the yo-yo ma video of this movement, but listening to this just now, du pre's version gave me the chills. it's too bad that there is no live performance to go along with the audio.
personally, I'm a fan of Rostropovich. His tone quality is so clear and he is still able to portray great emotion. I do agree he rushes this movement of this piece.
du Pre is still a great cellist. She's my cello teacher's idol, so I can't help but respect her a great deal.
@pbaron23: i agree...i think for example han-na chang played it better. but jaqueline du pré is a real...yes...she's a godness...i like her playing...i'm loving it...
dwil: What do you think about Rostropovich? Man, he played this movement so fast but it still sounded marvelous to me. I mean, it was completely different from Du Pre's and that's why I love his interpretation as well.
I think of Rostropovich as someone who impresses the crowd with his skill while du Pre fills the crowd with her emotion for every piece she plays. No matter what playing style these musical legends my have though, they will always have a place in our hearts.
i find that Chang plays most of these complex pieces with dead on accuracy, BUT she doesnt put any feeling into the pieces most of what she plays is dry. as far as rostropovich, i believe he played it too fast, i feel like his notes blend together at times, which takes away from the clarity
Hey for all I agree Jaqueline Du Pré was a werry good, and alsow a romantic cellist. ButSory I have to tell you guys, she didn't played well this concerto because she played too much romantic! and not just I say this, (a lot of people) ( but it sounds good, but it isn'ta good preformance of she) She played well the rommantic music, like Elgar, or Saint Seans :)
i disagree i find that romantic elements she used to play this concerto really make it live. i heard people play this concerto through with no feeling or vigor that this concerto needs (including myself) just relying on techinique. for example han-na chang. this first time i have ever heard this concerto not rushed
i feel that compared to Ma and Rostropovich the way that she plays this is both unique and better in that with her style of romanticism you can really hear each individual note rather than playing it at a much faster tempo where the individual note would be much less important and rather the effect of the whole is emphasized
magistral.

powerful, sweet... yet manages to show virtuosity at a tempo just under Presto. I saw many on youtube failed to adhere and played faster instead.

ah, but you also have to remember modern technology.
Back when JDP and earlier recordings of Rostropovich, you could hear mistakes.
Now, they have ways of editing those out, so that performances sound flawless.
