@Frefflica a typical sandinista track, your right, should of been on there, apparently it was a tribute to producer guy stevens (who died) and they didnt want to use it on an album as it would cheapen it.
@keji1 ah, right, with that in mind I can sort of understand. it's very clash, indeed. I find it sort of ironic though that guy stevens, the most eccentric person they've ever worked with, was tributed one of their rare slow songs. but it's great.
@keji1 think they said in the notes for the Clash on Broadway CD that they didn't even remember recording this, whether or not that's true it's a fact this was never released on any format and it's so much better than the best of just about any band you could mention. Scary they could put a genius track like this on the back burner.
@keji1 what are you talking about? sandinista came out dec 1980 guy stevens died in aug 81 and the clash recorded it the same month so it coudnt have gone on sandinista.
Its unbelievable that Joe never rated himself as a great songwriter or lyricist. Guy Stevens was credited as giving Procol Harem their name and I love this line, . "What days and nights though, rocking out of Ham Yard. Oh Skip that Fandango, bring the blues down hard" .
@tonym999music I actually beg to differ...If he hadn't he'd quit writing altogether...in hospital he wrote a book? no one said anything about that piece of writing and he spent weeks on it...or else I been dreaming...he was an excellent lyricist maybe too humble to admit it, thass'all
and what was the book he wrote? i bet no one has even heard of it, explaining why no one has said anything about it, and i bet joe never even tried to get it published.
@keji1 you're not in bed? No he ddin't try to find a publisher - too busy with songwriting I guess...He spent his thee weeks writing this book...it's a well known fact...as well known as Joe has re-materialised into a DIESEL ENGINE ????????????????????????????????????????????????? I never knew he was a buddhist...
Beautiful song . Some seem to to see Joe Strummer only as this huge icon, but
Joe was flesh and blood like all of us. A lover, husband, dad. He was not perfect and would have been the first to admit it.
I met Joe earlier on in the 70's, before the Clash set foot on U.S soil and he was just this nice guy with little money and a lot of drive. It's sad he's left us. Bye Joe.
@TryGobOff I met him among the crowd at the first T in the park concert. He was a man who made mistakes and admited he was at times naive. He was always willing to admit when he was wrong, Not many people can say that and not many can say they aren't motivated by money. Joe would be happy as a begger aslong as he had his health and his loved ones. He was a true legend without an ego.
Great tribute mate. Amazing song - was worth paying £25 for the Clash on Broadway box set for this and One Emotion and Every little bit hurts (had most everything else)! Sort of, now obv thank God people don't have to spend like that through the magic of the internet. Spooky that in the notes they claimed to hardly remember recording this song - it's so different from most of their other work.
thank you m8 .. yes amazing song, joe and mick didnt get the recognition they desrved with many tracks they wrote like this one. the one thing to keep in mind with the clash is that they never sold out like many of the other bands that were around then. a determination that joe kept to all throughout his music career.. god bless joe strummer
It was released on Clash on Broadway.
