I don't often see a matte box in front of the lens unless it's video. I can see the need. Perhaps it's not a matte box, but a custom hood. Don, can you share what it is, matte box, hood, brand? Thanks.
Old Photographer. People don't want OLD photographers. They want NEW and FRESH! It doesn't fill you with confidence when you are forking out $3,500 dollars for portraits and your photographer is using glasses.
Most wedding brides don't want some old 50 or 60 year old grandpa taking their photos either.
Quick tip, never shoot with a shutter speed lower than your focal length of your lens. i.e. if shooting at 60mm, shoot at 1/60th or above. 1/8th at 65mm at 5.6 with an ISO100 makes no photographic sense?
@opticalprism That is a rule of thumb that only relates to preventing camera shake, he's using a tripod, thus he can use whatever settings he wants. For example, lots of photographers do exposures anywhere from 1 second to 30 minutes at night. The fact that he's using a flash even further defeats the purpose of that rule, since it will freeze virtually anything in place within 1/1000th of a second.
checking the screen on the camera after each shot is a SCHOOL BOY ERROR. I will make your subjects insecure in your ability. you should be able to visualize the out come of each shot by looking through the viewfinder alone.
This is an incredibly boring picture. I'm sorry, not trying to be mean or insult, there is just nothing unique or interesting at all. But, that may be what the customer wanted too.
@rocklobster2112 -The phone call from the client " hello photographer i'd like you to take a really boring photograph of me" "er ok i like doing those - Would you like me to add an acid retro tone to it afterwards just to liven it up?" "no thanks boring will be fine after all are in our sixties ."
Oh go on then while your at it stick a tobacco grad on it and change my hair green -maybe a bit of a colour pop, can you get me doing the splits. ;)
I know who Mr. Gale is & I knew he was a great Landscape & Nature photographer but until now I actually wasn't aware of the portrait work. While I am sure he is really good I do have to say one thing. Although I myself am fairly young for a photographer (25 years old) I have studied under many great artist's & the one absolute I was always taught about taking "people pictures" is never, ever, ever say "don't move" or "freeze" or anything that extreme. "Hold" doesn't have the same mental effect.
Looks like fun!

You talk over the lady on 42 seconds. Probably not a good way to involve the subject in the shoot.

Very nice, did you have to use a reflector to fill in the left side?
lg123xyz 1 year ago
@lg123xyz
no reflector was needed, the extended shutter speed allowed enough ambient exposure in the shadow area. good question...don

You have to give your client what they want. :(
