The Japanese chose to attack because the US cut off their oil supply with the Oil Embargo. Why The Second Sino-Japanese War, Japan was left with two choices withdrawl from China and sign a truce, something the militarists who dominated Japan's government saw as unexectable (Death Before Dishonor), or go to war with the US
As for why the US was so unprepared, the more logical targets were Wake Island, and the Phillipinees, no one believed Pearl Harbor, headquarters of the fleet was the target

Heck even majority of my family fought in Baguio, Philippines in WW2 both in the guerrillas and american army. Most often my grand pa told me stories such as Guerilla member ran towards the middle of exchanging fire between Japanese soldiers to get ammo, supplies and ammo. Even our house is directly above a Japanese bunker, now a sewerage system, the hill just 5 - 10 mins away was an execution and raping (with corns as you "know") ground.

FDR ran as a peace candidate but had to get the US into WWII to help Stalin. Otherwise, he had no interest in stopping Hitler. The Pacific Fleet was stationed in Pearl Harbor to lure the Japanese there. Admiral Kimmins was sent there as a stooge and got a small fraction of the intelligence. The Japanese code was broken a year before the attack and FDR knew Pearl Harbor would be attacked.

The Japs did declare war, but it got bungled & delayed. The US knew something was going to happen, but they lacked the urgency to put ALL bases on alert earlier. The message arrived at Pearl Harbor in teh middle of the raid. The CIA never funded Al Qaeda, do you think a rich Saudi has problems getting money? Somehow if the US gives some people some rations or ammo, no matter how trivial it means we own them. Well, look at the Lend Lease we gave the Soviets in WW ll, did that mean we owned them?

america got what it deserve, just like 9/11.........they act like they are innocent angels who didnt do anything to provoke the attack......they act like japan and osama just woke up one day and say " hey guys lets attack america for no reason"

the Americans did know about pearl harbour. they were told by all the main leaders of the world months but did nothing. this was because it gave them an opportunity to enter the war

No, they werent warned, there where signs that Japan was warmongering. the president even send a message to japan, before pearl harbor. Asking them for one last time, in a friendly way. To seas warmongering.
