my name's neal and i just started to do drum (covers) videos, if any of you can please just check out my first drum cover it would be really appreciated, i'm just trying to get views and subscriptions. anyone, please?
Im going to India for half a year in a few days and would really like to know what song and artist this is so I can take it with me. Would be very happy if you could tell:)
if we talk abouto ROOM MICS i think i will go for the AKG C414-ULS, but if you want tu put it in the kick drum we need another one...Very usefull your video!!
hi, great vids thanks. i liked the tlm and dpa the best, they had the thickest and punchiest sound. did you run the tlm in omni or cardioid? what about the tlm's hpf and pad?
i'm starting to think omni's sound awesome for drum room in general after i heard an ev 365a.
Yesterday I was doing some experiments with my shure sm58 and was STONED!!!
I worked great as guitar cab mic, snare mic, kick drum (not so well xD) and awesome room mic. maybe try some not standard mic in name of joy in experimenting!
That TLM Rocks!! and the DPA Sounds great even with the small diaphragm! if you can, try a Ribbon mic like the AEA KU4 and Royer 122L or a more cheap choice the Apex 210 or Golden Age R1 MK2....
the room its small and sounds dry, im not sure if that rugged material in the wall helps you to have a big piece of drums in your recordings...
It helps bringing the real sound of the drumset and the room. It bring some extra "energy" to the sound, and sort of "glue" to make it sound more natural. when you use a lot of close miking ,you loose some of that magic, wish the room mic brings back. using a room mic can also help using less reverb in the mix, and make it easyer to mix with the other tracks.Sometimes you use just a little of that channel, sometimes you use a lot ' sometimes you end up not using it at all.
I have to throw this out there for anyone interested. My personal favorite room mic is a MXL 990. It has a very high output and it has a very flat frequence response. Great if you use it and then add a little reverb to it.
NEUMANN TLM-127 RODE K2 and DPA 4090 are top dogs.. It would be great if you make stereo demos of these mics.. if you have pairs of them..
Also! not to be a critic but a room mic in this small room is not too efficient.. But with a stereo set up you can capture an awesome sound from your kit for jazz and folk music..
@girotube I got to agree with you. Its always better to have big room for that prupose. the way i placed the camera dont reveal that there are still 22 feet of distance from the kit. The video still helps to get an imression of wich mic is the most balnced/got he best bass response/ etc.
chosing a mic is probably the hardest thing i've ever had to do. you can hear the differences thanks to videos like yours, but it doesn't tell which one will work best, because there's no actual "better" here ...
my concern is not mic for drums but for vocals, but the problem is the same ^^
@kobifarhiMusic I think it would maybe be best to hear not how these different mics sound alone but what they do to the room sound with the rest of the kit miked up. I like how you can easily tell the differences in these mics, but I think it would also be great to have them with the full kit sound.
1. Neumann TLM 127
2. DPA 4090

Liked the Neumann TLM-127 and the DPA the best, but as usual, I'd need to hear what they sound like in the mix.

For me valve mics can make for really exciting room mics. Give great energy and presence. I use a SE Z5600MKIIa. epic.

For me: K2 wins, followed by DPA4090 and TLM127. Don't like the AKG. Thanks for the test - and: cool drumming!

on my monitors at least, I think I like the K2 the best. but I prefer the snare sound from the DPA.. ho hum..

I gotta throw the ribbon r84 in there too.

414 and the dpa! I also like using a kiwi and sometimes a km 184 - never facing the kit though imo. Too much cymbal after squashing it...

@steelcitysi I guess Omnis sound the best in great rooms but the worse in bad rooms... here the Tlm was cardioid without any switch .

@steelcitysi the dpa sounds the best...
