Yeah thats a good point Lotus.. I mean Sage himself said in an interview that 50 Cent, Jay-Z etc.. is just a different type of hip-hop doesnt really need to have a message.., which it doesnt... Thats just how it is.
the reason after the fact that rappers like JayZ and the likes have the power of jam down your throat advertising is because the shit on the radio feeds the ego of the masses. Ego is a VERY strong player, VERY strong. Consider all who find music/poetry by the likes of Sole, Sage Francis, etc to be the lucky ones who are not run by ego, but by something less shallow; consider us all who listen "The Few Who Know the Difference"
@LotusACBC I couldn't agree more. It sucks, because I've got a handful of close friends I've loved since middle school and I feel like they'll never truly care to search for the essence of anything. Whether it may be philosophies of life, music, government, etc., they seem to accept/believe anything/everything that the media feeds them. When we're all drinking together, I always end up being the "weird" one, because I have no idea what happened on MTV last week and I didn't believe Fox news. lol
ego that's the fucking problem, totally agree with you,in France we have the same shit since 10 years in the rap music the most famous are the bling bling boy without brain but with big muscles....it's not music just egotrip !!! your underground is better than our, difficult to listen real rap here it's just puppet who sell their soul to capitalism
@LotusACBC i dont see a division between underground hip hop and mainstream... i grew up on underground (slug, sage, sole, eyedea, josh martinez, deltron, etc), and hated mainstream, but i came to see mainstream is still hip hop, just expressed differently, and i now appreciate it because, well, it is still hip hop... i love hip hop in any form... i guess i am just a die hard appreciator of hip hop and its lifestyle, in any form it comes
@LotusACBC, Ego is the origin of human conflicts. Kudos to your truthful words, sir. Can't wait for Hello Cruel World album from him. It's gonna be freaking sweet.
@LotusACBC Sage Francis sucks dick. He's a white guy who doesn't know anything about politics. Jay-Z literally set the East Coast game in the mid-90's with Reasonable doubt, which is genius. You probably wouldn't have your whitebread hip-hop with kids trying way too hard to be "deep" without it. I like Sole and my fair share of backpackers, but the majority of stuff like this (such as Aesop Rock, any member of Rhymesayers outside of DOOM, Atmosphere and POS) are terrible.
@teethofghosts I don't think Sage Francis sucks dick...believe it or not everything that's rap after 1996 isn't all influenced by Jay-Z..there's this odd thing some people have called originality
@TheJW84 I never said all hip-hop post-1996 was biting Jay-Z? lol. I never even remotely implied that. I'm just saying he was largely influential and released one of the best 90s East Coast albums. And you know even Sole and people on Def Jux are influenced by SOMEONE, it doesn't mean you're unoriginal.
@teethofghosts You never even remotely implied that?? I'm pretty sure you did, and even if you didn't you came on here being all condescending and labeling anyone who likes Sole as"whitebread hip-hop" You were dick riding Reasonable Doubt, which is overrated , and that album is basically gangsta shit.., Sole and Sage Francis just don't sound too East coast gangsta rap to me...and of course their influenced by someone, but most of those rappers you listed (Slug for example) were rapping in 1990
@TheJW84 Sole is whitebread hip-hop. I like him but he's stuff for backpackers. And haha are you actually using "gangsta shit" as if it's a bad thing? That's possibly one of the stupidest hip-hop opinions I've ever heard in my life. And I never literally said "Every rapper that ever existed in the history of time has been influenced by Jay-Z", I'm just saying he was extremely influential and crucial to the hip-hop scene in general. And Sage Francis sucks big time.
@MrRagweed Hahaha oh my god you're such a typical white kid hip-hop fan. Have you even listened to Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt? It's one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. And just because an artist is mainstream doesn't make them bad. You officially know nothing of hip-hop.
@MrRagweed So dumb. No, I don't believe that all hip-hop has to be made by black people. There are fantastic white rapper/hip-hop fans, but then there are the two types of white hip-hop fans that everyone is embarrassed by. 1. The frat rap kid. This guy will usually listen to mostly Mac Miller and stuff, no explanation needed. 2. The backpacker. This is the kind of hip-hop fan who thinks that the genre is some sort of pissing contest between who's "deeper" than the other. Guess which you are.
@MrRagweed I never even said this music was bad. I like it and I like the entirety of Selling Live Water. And haha, wow. Racism and "GO LISTEN TO MAINSTREAM BULLSHIT POP NOT LIKE MY DEEP MUSIC TASTE" is sure a good and well thought-out comeback. Congrats. Why would I be trolling?
