Thanks for all the great history included in the video! I'd just listened to 2 others of this & it wasn't quite as I'd remembered it. The beginning of this just sounded a little cleaner. I was shocked at the end to see this is a COVER! I usually feel cheated on covers, but I've been really BLESSED this time ! ! ! Sending this to my best tube friend for her take. Dang, you are superb on this! ! ! My channel is 600 playlists of the best music on earth - I put you on my 2007 playlist! chuck
@chkjns Wow, thank you for the compliment, you made my day. I'm really pleased that you like it. It's just my humble tribute to Ray's original interpretation of this jazz standard. Have a great day!
Chuckle... Excellent tribute Pequinito! (I'm just glad that there's someone in the world who I actually have a chance of beating in a karaoke contest...)
LOL again! You certainly picked an interesting number in "I've been everywhere", that's one I couldn't possibly cover. I imagine you've sung it yourself though, you know your country don't you :)
Apparently the original idea for doing this song came from JayDee Maness, Ray's steel player of that time. JayDee said they would play this tune instrumentally as a break tune
in some of the many LA clubs he'd worked in
back in CA. This was recorded the very last night JayDee was in Nashville, apparently he'd
had enough of the way things were done there.
The steel break in the original version has been considered classic for a long time now.
The interesting thing about this song, (to me anyway), is that in an interview with Ray Stevens, I heard that this song cmae about as a studio goof-song, just something they did for fun. A company exec heard it and very strongly SUGGESTED they record it... it was a hit that surprised all of them.
I love this song but only Ray Stevens' version. Johnny Mathis version leaves me cold, it's just sung boringly as another boring standard. Ray pepped it up and made it memorable. It's like "For Once in My Life"; before Stevie Wonder came along it was just another boring standard sung by bores. Now everybody sings the Stevie version.
No disrespect Piquinito but you ain't Ray Stevens. Like me you can't hit the top notes and you get out of time a bit. Still you're pretty good and a decent surrogate until the real thing comes along.
No disrespect Pequinito but you ain't Ray Stevens. Nice try but like me you can't hit the top notes. Not a bad surrogate until the real thing comes along.
Nice try Pequinito for a Brit (like me) but you ain't Ray Stevens my old mate. I reckon I could make a version as good as yours but I can't hit those top notes either whereas Ray could easily. When are we going to get Ray's original. Somebody must have it.
Nice try Pequinito but you ain't Ray Stevens. You can't reach the top notes tou see, I can sing it better than you but Ray Stevens has far more talent than I have. Now where's the original Ray Stevens studio version. Some bugger must have it. Come on put it on here and put us all out of our misery.
Nice try Pequinito but you ain't Ray Stevens. Honestly I could sing it better than you. You(and I admit me) just don't have Ray's vocal talents. Now where's the bloody original studio version. Please put it on here. We're all going mad.
In the grid of videos below mine, right in the middle of the top row is the original Ray Stevens. When you click on it, it tells you that the video has been removed. If you click on StonewallStudios, it tells you the account has been suspended. I'm as disappointed as you are at this.
I doubt that it's someone as illustrious as Al Perkins. I made this as a tribute and video response to the original of Ray Stevens, but unfortunately Ray's version was removed shortly afterward.
It should be mentioned that this is not Ray Stevens singing, though the backing track is the same as on Ray's recording. Not a bad karaoke version--keeps closely to Ray's phrasing anyway, and no off notes!
Awesome cover!

Just been looking at some of your other stuff! Excellent! Particularly enjoyed your cover of "Magic Moments".
I'd like to listen to you having a crack at Hank Snows "I've been everywhere man"
That could be interesting! :-)

Agree with you 100%. I love Ray Stevens ... his version is fantastic ... banjo and fiddles just add to it.
Great memory!

Glad you agree. It's a pity we can't have the original Ray Stevens' version no offence to Pequinito.
