I am experiencing a major rush, this is incredible and as someone that has only really began to explore Durutti Column in the last few weeks I am excited at the prospect of finding more great songs from them and Vini. His guitar playing is amazing, why has he never had more recognition? I cant get over how good this is.....
your not an idiot, anyone who plays the guitar cant play by ear without developing a musical ear, its the same thing with everyone else. you need to develop an ear and learn about notes chord construction and scales etc. its not as easy as people may make it out, its hard and takes practice adn theory lessons
Never quite known what to make of Bruce Mitchell's drumming style, if it can be called a 'style'. At times he is painfully all at sea and other times his very basic approach is just what's needed. Just trying to imagine how much better this track would sound with a maestro like Jack DeJohnette subtly pushing along the guitar.
It's funny, when I was younger and had recently started playing guitar, I was so hung-up on technique and shredding and all that, but now, when I hear Vini or someone like Bernard Sumner playing guitar all I want to do is come up with just one song in my lifetime that has the effect on others that this song has on me.
@guitar19904 Yeah, of course I realise that now but I didn't when I was 14. This riff is incredible and, besides anything, actually sounds difficult to play.
Nice, the way at 2.30 he changes grip. Turns from jazz drummer to rock drummer. Good man Bruce. You knew that what was coming demanded a stronger wrist. Not gettin all Kenneth Williams here, just an observatiuon.
Vini Reilly should officially go down as one of the most humble, most greatest, most unheard of, and most completely under-rated artist to ever exist. The man makes some of the most amazing/dreamy guitar playing i've ever heard, yet you rarely see him on lists of greatest guitarists ever. He sounds so way ahead of his time here. He's long due. He doesn't complain and Even though he does this for the music, he's got to be recognized for his artistry more! Seriously!!
vini reilly is one of the best (alongside Mick Ronson, Mick Jones and Steve Jones) and underrated Les Paul Custom players. I was playing a Epiphone version and it was punchier than the American Fender Telecaster. He is now playing exclusively a Stratocaster, no? It isn't strange if some day he will play his LP Custom again.
It brought tears to my eyes ! I love the way he plays the guitar and prduces such melody full with genuine emotion ! But if the guitar is a Killer , Michael's drums are like rocket bursts , or when he plays with his hands so
fantastic video, met Vinni quite a few times in the late 80s, Probably one of the most underrated guitarists around, he did all guitar work on Morrissey's "Viva Hate" album.
Apparently Reilly was somewhat sick during this concert. The speaker's introduction in English:
"The fellow in his checkered pants and white shirt is Vini Reilly. Vini isn't quite well... I mean Vini's health isn't top notch but today he said he's feeling quite okay. The drums are banged by half of Africa, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column".
Wonder what's with the "half of Africa" part! Anyways, I'm amazed to see that they've actually performed here in Finland.
i think "half of Africa" is a compliment to Bruce Mitchell meaning it sounds like his drumming IS half of Africa as he makes such an amazing sound. as we know drums are a big part of African culture!
buy the auld fecker a drink from me . . . .I heard from someone that they were offered cash to let their tunes to be used in adverts but knocked it back . . .I hope that's true. . .get him crisps as well. . .I'll send you the cash
I am not sure if you guys know this story: The Original version of the first DC LP had Sandpaper glued onto the cover, well they were assembled at Factory records by a new band wanting to make some money on the side and that band was Joy Division..
It's been more than 20 years since I saw this video a couple of times in a bar here in Rio de Janeiro. Since then I'm a great fan. Thanks for this video, It's been a real emotion to see this performance again.
i remember when me old mate Tel Boy showed me this clip back in the mid-eighties I'd never heard of The DC and it just blew me away. Bruce Mitchell is so in the zone it's perfect. This has to go down as an all-time top live performance. After all these years I still love it and I'm so glad it has been made available here. About once a week I turn this up and dance like crazy to it, all zoned out, just like Bruce.
even though i am here in minneapolis i totally feel the vibe youre talking about. I crank it up in my car with an alpine deck and speakers and just blast it after i puff down some good tree and just trip out. Such a phenomenal song.
@zakalwe101 forget i showed you this too. didnt know at the time it was about ian curtis though. recently got the video again fae ebay...they need to bring this out on dvd and the rest of the tracks too, there were a couple of new order ones on it as well!!!
thanks for putting this up, it disappeared for a while. can't find the original video or this particular recording anywhere... it's so much better than the LC version.
The song (studio version) is from the album "LC" by Durutti Column (Factory Records, same label as JD). This video is from "A Factory Video" which was an awesome compilation of Factory bands' videos. I haven't seen this in literally about 25 years. I can't find the VHS anywhere and don't think it ever came out on DVD. Some lawyers are probably tying it up somewhere.
The 'same old older' reference is a reference to the 'machinery in action-full of experts,' of presumably the music press, because that line follows the line "I don't believe in stardom." Doesn't really sound like NEW Order to me. Besides why would Vini Reilly write a negative line about his friends?

'Missing Boy' just gets better and better with each listen. Made me buy 'the best of Durutti' off of amazon. (5:37 he is in total bliss! like a kid in a candy store!) I can't believe I've never heard of these guys before! TOTALLY AWESOME!
