Unemployment was 4.2 when GWB took office, grew during his presidency ending at 7.7%. It's a lagging indicator, so was expected to continue to rise somewhat under Obama. Obviously if people aren't working they can't pay their mortgages. Also, one major problem w/ sub-prime mortgages was that mortgage-backed securities & credit default swaps encouraged bad lending behavior.

Look I think there is a great deal of misunderstanding about America and that's our own faults- you do not get to change America into what you want it to be, that's not what this country was founded on. America is a constitutional republic, we have to follow the constitution- people like to reinterpret the constitution often to do what they want, all I know is anyone with common sense should understand the founding father's would not like what is going on today and they wrote the thing.

When the public doesn't have $ to spend, the gov't needs to step in.

As a taxpayer, would you rather pay for a $1k ER visit or $75 at a gov't-run clinic when an uninsured person has the flu? Further, healthcare reform is also aimed at reducing costs so your employer won't eventually stop providing healthcare for you. Redistribution of wealth just refers to a progressive tax system, which isn't socialism. Look it up.

Tax breaks don't work because they don't stimulate consumer spending--people just pay down debt. Stop parroting right wing BS & quit blaming Obama for not fixing the economy in 18 mos. Now with Obama & the same fools in control of House & Senate, unemployment went from 7.6 to over 10% and hasn't been below 9.7%. Our economy is in worse shape, foreclosure hit a NEW record high and Obama has done NOTHING to help America.

Bush, after 9-11, 2 wars, hurricane Katrina and our aid to Indonesia after the 2004 tsunami kept our unemployment down to 4.4%, gas got no higher than $2.32/gal., our economy strong & house sales at record highs.

@CasperCee You're way off on your GWB stats. I don't blame him for gas prices, but they did peak in 2008 at around $4/gal. Unemployment was 4.2 when GWB took office, grew during his presidency ending at 7.7%. It's a lagging indicator, so was expected to continue to rise somewhat under Obama. Obviously if people aren't working they can't pay their mortgages. Also, one major problem w/ sub-prime mortgages was that mortgage-backed securities & credit default swaps encouraged bad lending behavior.

The single most important one the stimulus package passed with no help from Republicans, party of no. .Health care bill 3/4 the way completed. Its on its last strectch. To say it won't pass is jumping the gun. Again to say the stimulus package failed is to be ignorant. Only 40% of the stimulus has been spent. 60% has not been spent. It could help the unemployment rate, that is truly a smart administration.

Pelosi's term is still ongoing, the judgement is not out on her yet. Bush whose term is over and the Republican are the failures. That is why Americans voted them out. My fear is that the last year 8 has diminished America's geopolitical and economic standing and has empowered rivals. Borrowing money from countries that are seeking to be in American shoes.

In the latter part of 2008(bush) and begining 2009(obama), the economy was shedding half a million jobs a month. The markets were falling astronomically, at a level unheard of in decades. This is no longer happening 9 months into Obama's administration(not bad). Markets are not dropping preciptiously. People are starting to buy realestate again. Banks are beginning to lighten up. The worse has stopped. 9.8% unemployment hope fully the 60% of the unspent stimulus package will assist.

Lets do the math. The democrats had the legislative branch, which was not a super majority(2006). Republicans had the judicial branch and the executive branch(bush). That is 2 to 1. Republican in control.

I hate to break it to you but the economy is worse. the Unemployment rate is actually at 9.8% It is as a result of the most recent stimulus bill that was passed by Obama. If you look at the Bureau of labor website, the job market was fine until about 2006. Oh that's when the democrats took over. Silly me, how can I forget that?

I was starting to walk down the angry libertarian path but I think we all need to stop bickering with one another and understand what made America great, why it was founded and how we can rebuild our republic and never let it get out of control again (I think balancing the budget and gold back dollars would be a good start) we're ahead for some tough times but this isn't the first time, Americans have a history of rolling up our sleeves and that's what made us great, let's be great again.

Look I think there is a great deal of misunderstanding about America and that's our own faults- you do not get to change America into what you want it to be, that's not what this country was founded on. America is a constitutional republic, we have to follow the constitution- people like to reinterpret the constitution often to do what they want, all I know is anyone with common sense should understand the founding father's would not like what is going on today and they wrote the thing.

I get that, no changing the constitution, but there is plenty of room for change in how the government is run. If there isn't then what's the point of having the different parties if its all just going to be the same anyway? (although you could argue that they really are just the same party) It also took forever to to get the constitution written in a way that the founding fathers could barely agree on signing, and even after that they continued to fight. its difficult to say what they wanted.
