Really good sound. Question - I'm new at this and everything I've read says fiddle is supported by chin and shoulder, that left hand should not support fiddle. With this hold style is left hand supporting fiddle? Thanks.
If you look at old photos of American fiddlers (like from 100 years ago), you'll see a lot of them holding their instruments like this. Today, it's very rare. I myself hold my fiddle like this, and just find it "right" for me ergonomically and visually. It does make getting into the upper positions very difficult and Lester has had difficulties with this, but it allows the player to see their fingers better, and you don't have that loud sound in your ear all the time.
Man that is some good oldtimin' I still have not figured out how they could play a fiddle like that. I would drop it in a heart beat. Just shows how good he is.
Whew, I just finished listening to this 8 times, playing along on my guitar with it for the last 6. I am hypnotized.

@btr0037 You could have seen and heard Lester at the Virginia Folk Festival in Richmond this past weekend.
He'll be at the Old Fiddlers' Reunion in Elkins, WV, on Oct. 30, 2010.
You all should come by.

Lester is one of my all time favorite fiddles, thanks to you. :-) I haven't tuned in for a while. I love this tune.

There are a lot of great fiddlers these days, but not many of the real old timers left. Enjoy it while you can. This is the good stuff right here.

wonderful moving piece. I was wondering, does anyone know what tuning he is using?
Thanks

Lester is the best!

Lester never read anything about how you "should" play, he just plays. His fiddle is supported by his left wrist and chest.

It also allows the fiddler to sing while playing. Great banjo playing by Kim!
