  • i think that this could sound amazing through a wah wah pedal

  • hello! excuse the inconvenience!

can you tell me where you bought the sitar and what brand?

    this is a sitar Munda?

you can advise me a good sitar?

  • Awesome. Sounds more Persian than Indian, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! :)

  • Good stuff man! I've been wanting a Sitar for years. Alas, money I do not have. The Phrygian scale on guitar just doesn't quite cut it for long ._.

However, you state that you are self taught? How long did it take to get you this good? I'm a self taught guitarist and I seem to get the hang of new instruments quite easily. However, I've heard that the sitar is incredibly difficult with its use of semi and half tones?

  • I think I just bought the same sitar as you!! how do you like it? I here it comes out of tune every ten minutes? what name does yours go under? if any lol

  • Great... hey men... i realy enjoy it... can you talk me about you sitar... how do you buy it.... i have just the same whit the birds... i just get my sitar today!!!!

    a hug,

    C

  • how many strings does that have

  • Beautiful!

You have a curious way of playing, though, especially the chikari strings.

Besides deliberately strumming the brass ones, are you using thicker strings for the chikari?

  • I'm not really sure about it, but I don't think so. I bought Pyramid strings and they have a default size, anyway, I didn't get any lessons with sitar, so that's probably why i'm playing in a weird way :-P

  • Ah, makes sense. Normally, one hits only the chikari (the 3 upper strings used for emphasis), avoiding the the lower brass strings.

Our teachers ding us when we hit the lower ones, as it demonstrates a lack of control and discipline, and is jarring to the Indian classical ear.

Nevertheless, you have developed a unique style of your own which works, in a strange, refreshing way.

That you could do this on your own, without formal training, speaks well of your inherent talent and creativity.

  • txs for the additional information, I think it's gonna help me to improve my technique with the instrument, it's always good to learn something new.

    Txs a lot! :-)

  • My pleasure.

It helps to hit outward, away from your body, as if you were pointing at someone's foot in front of you. You produce a cleaner, sharper sound that way.

For emphasis, you may also hit the uppermost brass strings (as you already do), but to strike the chikari with your index pointing a bit toward your left, instead of straight down.

So instead of the brass strings being strummed, they're hit at more or less the same time as the chikari, creating a single, combined note.

  • awesome....im gonna learn the sitar one day

  • txs mate. You should try yes, it's really relaxing!

  • where did you get your sitar? i really want one.

  • i bought it in ebay,a guy from germany. I can't remember his name, sorry. but take a look in ebay

  • alright thanks

  • What note is your sitar tuned to? Must be very low

  • well, it was supossed to be tuned in a C tone, with the first string in F. I think that's the way I tuned it. It is something wrong on it? if that's the case I'll be very pleased if you could tell me the right way.

    cheers

  • no, its tuned just right. :-) Maybe you should try using a mizrab (that plectrum thing for the sitar) Makes a richer tone come out of the sitar)

    Kepp it up,

    Cheers

  • I'm using a mizrab in the song. maybe it's just because of the apmlification. txs anyway :-)

  • i didnt know you could hook up a sitar to an amp,do they all come like that or do you have to get one specifically that can do that?

  • You can attach a transducer/pickup to the sitar and connect that to an amp.

  • You can also try tuning it do D. Sounds clearer that way.

    :-)

  • 1st string F#, 2nd C#, 3rd G#, 4th C#, 5th if kept on it G#

    6th +7th C#,

the sympathetic ones very depending on the raga

  • txs, all help is always welcome!! :)

  • frm 0:28 to 0:33, the tune is very familiar....i can place it exactly......

  • no idea mate! I was only jamming! :-)

  • frm 0:28 to 0:33, i thought i have heard that tune somewhere before....any idea whr else is it used.....:p
