Actually it's was done by a mixture of a male voice (Derek Lee Ragin) and a woman's voice (Ewa Mallas-Godlewska) - they used special audio edition to merge the two voices to create a sound much "closer" to the true castrato voice. x
do a search for allesandro moreschi. there are a bunch of recordings of him from 1902/1904. you can here some of them here on youtube. he was the only castrato to ever make recordings. the sound is eerie but beautiful too.
@viharsarok You know english isn't the only language int the world, eg we have kastraat, english have castrato, castratti is (i think) spanish or something like that
@emiliatrag Are you serious? Are ther other languages than English? I never knew that even though I'm fluent in like four of them, and can read in an additional four.
Castratti is not Spanish, the Spanish term is castrato just like its Italian counterpart.
@viharsarok Sorry, I was making a joke, humor doesn't transfer well in internet. But i googled and castratti is portugese, which means i was right ;) (I said spanish or something like that, and because spanish and portugese are related, so portugese is something like spanish )
@viharsarok in fact the translation in spanish is "castrado". Castratti or castrati is plural . So, in spanish we can say castrato or castrado or the plural way. I think is not the same for the term "Opera". This term have not a translation in to spanish. I remember once that someone, in an english proficiency test, asked me for the term "Opera" in english. He asked me to say Opera in english. I still do not know how it is and. of course, he neither told me ;) hehehehehee!
You should look up their training regime. That's what gave them the huge voices. They trained so much harder than any other singer. Modern singers don't train quite the same way. It's also speculated that they had larger rib cages as well.
farinelli died 1782, tapes did not exist at that time. so tell me how they were able to record him ...
and the second bullshit you said: the man in the movie (Stefano Dionisi) did not sing one note! the people who gave their voices were: Derek Lee Ragin and Ewa Mallas-Godlewska
@marciotricoli Cecilia Bartoli recorded the "voice" of Farinelli for the movie. She said in a later interview to Reader´s Digest that it was very hard, since the arias were specially created for castratti, who as men still had bigger lungs, stronger abdominal muscles and an extraordinary air capacity, if we add to that the feature of the high pitch as a woman, the result was something imposible to reach unless you are a soprano with double size lungs or a tenor with your balls cut off :) :) .)
@Evelyn40420 well, i dont remember if it was exactly cecilia bartoli, but she did make a castrati album inspired by the movie and explained later how hard it was, it is possible to sing like castrati if you prepare yourself
They have recordings of the guy who is considered the last castrato Moreschi. He wasn't quite the same thing though. A castrated kid who did train to be a singer. But trained as a modern singer. It's a different technique and a very different regime. The recordings aren't great, but it's an idea.
And, to operate 5 times this number and get more singers, anything was a good reason the lose the balls: headaches, bad vision, bad taste on mouth... Isn't terrible?
But you see, the sound isn't the true Farinelli, but the voice that was made for the movie, combining the soprano Ewa Mallas Godlewska and the counter-tenor Derek Lee Ragin.
Althought I didn't like his voice, it was well done, wasn't it?
When they made the movie it was a mixture of several voices , However there are they that can sing like this . Philippe Jaroussky can hit high notes with nuts. So dont judge to fast please. And he has the voice of an angel.
The voice was digitally reproduced from written descriptions and from the recording of Morachi (last and only recorded castrato). But the voice of Farinelli in this movie is a mixture of a female sopprano with a male tenor.
This not Cecilia Bartoli, nor Vivica Genaux. The voice was reconstructed mixing the voices of the soprano Ewa Małas-Godlewska and the contertenor Derek Lee Ragin. You can check the video of Muza8 entitled "Ewa Malas-Godlewska, the voice of Farinelli". Wher you can see both singers.
one of our last castrato the movie was good it showed how opera singers lived like rock stars and i guess since he had no well family jewles since they cut it off every womanwanted him cuz i guess no pregmancy
This does not sound like a castrato at all. It sounds more like Cecilia Bartoli. Search for "Moreschi". Moreschi still isn't Farinelli of course (Farinelli must have had a more beautiful voice) but it gives you an idea of how castratos sounded.
it actually was a woman singing for his part and he just lip synched. it's astounding that people actually did those kinds of things to little boys. it was actually pretty common.
Common? There's an understatement. Try 4,000 boys per year from about 1720 to 1740 alone just to take a 20 year slice from when they were at their height. Do the math. That's at least 80000 boys. The practice went on until it was officially banned in 1870 (130 years after the stats I mentioned.)
I'm not sure of the figures, but they actually did the operation on lots more, since the mortality rate after the op was so high. To ensure an adequate supply of singers survived the proceedure, they had to operate on maybe 5 times this number. Horrifying, huh?
its not a castrato no one actually knows what exactly a castrato sounds like as its illegal to castrate boys now but no its definatly not how a real castrato would sound
well in fact there's still a recording from the last castrato who served as singer in the Vatican, and if I remember properly, he died in 1922, and the recording was made at the begining of the century, I think the piece was something by Puccini, but I'm not sure
For the movie they recorded two different FEAMALE voices to get a close sound to what they think a Castrato sounded like... Its not actually Farinelli singing in this clip
Yes I'm sure. You can check the vieo of Muza8 entitled "Ewa Malas-Godlewska, the voice of Farinelli". Anyway I have a special version of th DVD wich includes some goodies about how the voice got computerised
actually cutting the testicles before the voice change, allows a boy to keep their high soprano voice for the rest of their lifes, and that's why castrati were such great singers, they were professional male singers, with a female voice
Not quite. Female range, boy's larynx, adult man's body. Unique voice. Not man's, not woman's, not boy's, unique. Sounds utterly alien to our modern ears. See Alessandro Moreschi, L'angello Di Roma. He was the last castrato and recorded himself. Try the recording of Tosti's Ideale for your first introduction. It's on youtube.
It used to do that to me too until I got over the horror and just focues on the voice itself. Like I said, utterly alien. Closest you'll get to it is a natural castrato like Medina, Marian or Nascimento. Helped to compare him to contemporary female sopranos' recordings too. His Italian stuff is way better than his Latin stuff especially the Ideale.
He might have a wonderful voice if he wasn't castrated. Wait about 5 years after puberty, and he'll do fine. It usually takes that long for the male voice to develop fully after puberty.
hahahahahaha viva il costello .......molto bella. ma e normale ?
