I can see the disadvantage of doing the Tug of War on parallel tracks. Perhaps you could hand-lay a gauntlet track section (Google it) on a separate board, to reduce the problem with the skew-whiff tailrope.
Random question have you ever had any issues with your James ? ( the hornby one ) . My James is an original 1988 version and the tender suffers conectivity issues and the driving wheels on the loco lock up . Seeing your James belt round your fine layout hauling many coaches makes me wonder why my james cant even move himself ! But that aside these videos are very infomative top work :-)
@JBofBrisbane Well his motor when it makes a good connection runs like a beast as shown in the vis his wheels on the tender are clean as ar his tyres. And his cogs move freely and are well oiled. It' the wherels on the loc that lock up and I cant see how it can pull off his wheels I have tried lol ! I can see any serews on them other than the ones that hold on his side rods.
i no y there is no coupling at the the front of the bachmann model as u said very rarely r the thomas tender engines seen pulling trains tender first. That is cus in one of the first episodes of thomas and friends i think tenders and turntables (something like that) Ringo Star says 'because it is dangerous for big engines to go backwards ' and that one thing was carryed on forever
@legotrainzman Legitimately yes, but you should also think about the fact that Hornby based them as their real-life counter parts (and parts of RWS if you read them), while the Bachmann range is based on the TV series. You could say a difference that people on both sides of the Atlantic would consider...
simerski...I saw a bachmann james reviw. when they opend it pop the bachmann james came in it's box but not it's origanl packge. and they had the same as you and it was not a set.
simerski...I saw a bachmann james reviw. when they opend it pop the bachmann james came in it's box but not it's origanl packge. and they had the same as you and it was not a set
I'm not sure comparing the Hornby price against the RailRoad range is fair, as the RR range is a budget range using older, less detailed toolings to keep the price down and their James is not part of this range. I think the price compares favourable to other Hornby locos in their "main" range, which are astronomic. That said, I got my James around 20 years ago (or so) when Hornby first started doing the Thomas range, and he cost about £40 from a toy/train exhibition.
@TKTiger - actually TK, in many respects the Railroad models (though derived from older toolings) are actually superior models, with tender drives eliminated in favour of loco drives in all cases (5MT versus Henry, for example, A1 versus Gordon is another), and in most cases are DCC fitted or ready! All at prices far lower than the higher priced, lower spec Thomas range. The comparison is fair because it's calling into question value for money.
@simierski A fair and well reasoned argument, thank you.
I'd love to see how my Thomas models from the 80's compare to the modern breed, but they'd need a good service and run in first, and I lack the space in which to do it. I'd also need to find Percy's face, which I fear was lost during a house move many moons ago.
Well I checked And Bachmann james does not have a front coupling so only thomas and percy can have them so if you figure out how please make a video about it it would be so coll
I have a question in other thomas series on youtube there bachmann thomas percy have front couplings I think they give james frint couplings to Im not vary shore I'll look it up and when I do all tell you do you know how to do that if you do can you make video about it that would be amazing
Actually Hornby doesn't have an aim for the Thomas models. To save money (or some other reason) they just take one of their models and give it new paintwork, a face, and in some model's case, an existing motor with a new body.
@ThomastheCameraHog They aim for the RWS. And i dont mean to sound mean or anything, but they do give consideration before just dumping a model. Henry is based on a black 5 in real life and in hornby form! =D
Ok, after looking at my Bachmann James I took a sharpie pen and did the changes made to the smokebox (kept the wheels and axels grey because i don't mind it too much). I don't need to do anything else with it do I?
I agree with you on the front coupling on the bachmann James they should put one on because in some episodes Edward is coupled to the front of James to help pull heavy loads.
Phenomenal review sir. I agree with everything, EVERYTHING you said. The Hornby may be superior, but I can't justify spending two, or THREE times as much, for a hobby. If my sons get older and richer, they are welcome to buy better quality, at a higher price, but for their first HO electric trains, I have to go with Bachmann.
Thank you for this very fair, and well done review.
@simierski Fancy? I don't think my desire factors into this. Right now, my 5 year old is starting to get bored with the Trackmaster sets. The more moving parts ( coupling, and piston rods) on these will thrill him.
I subscribed, and look forward to further reviews.
@Rammmathornnn You could guarantee that Hiro will come a little later after every character from the classic series will be released... It'll be very interesting though to see Hiro as an OO or HO model :)
@Rammmathornnn - Hiro? Not a certainty by any means, but he may be popular enough for future development. As I say with every character not yet made, an email dropped to the company will make them think more and more about a particular product. My apologies for the late reply, Youtube's email alerts have not been working lately.
What is the exact type of black paint you used and how did you apply it onto your USA James model? Was it hand brushed on or did you use an air brush? The reason i say this is because i am tempted about getting the Bachmann one as it's cheaper, more TV authentic ( excluding the face as Bachmann USA seems to have reused it for their Thomas, Percy and James models. )
@123emilymason - Lady is not a model. I cannot review a model that does not exist. The character in question appeared twice in five years, and never again...!
@simierski for a character who rarely appeared she's much talked about, its interesting as I also get lots of mail about Lady, That character Emily is also very popular.
@leokimvideo The fanfic amazes me. There's so many accounts of anime, etc. based on her. it is beautiful that people have created a wonderful fanbase for her!

@leokimvideo - my gut feeling is the Percy video was the best of the three, but with the James video I got the mix of background music (when it was needed) right.
The Hornby James definitely does seem comparably over-priced. Though it's speed, fine detail, and ability to pull more carriages would make it a very appealing option even despite the extra cost. Very detailed interesting train review.

@C0BO ok. well i have just recieved an email from the customer care person of hornby and he doesnt know what's happened to them either. he thinks they may just be out of stock.
Another successful review. I Agree that overall, The Hornby model is supreme. In terms of price to quality, Bachmann can't be beat. (In my oppinion). Great job. I will give my vote for the next review: Bill and Ben The tank engine twins, which I see you now have.
@simierski its dier ent from british steam engines but i might be able to get a vid up just subsribe to know when it comes out ok (i can PM u if u dont want to subsribe.
When you are comparing the faces in the next Thomas VS video, could you perhaps show a photo of what the TV Series model's face, or the face it's supposed to resemble, when comparing the two engine faces? Doing so might help parents who are unfamiliar with certain details of the Thomas & Friends TV series see which looks more accurate..? Just an idea that came to mind.
@Lightninging63 - unfortunately that would be beyond the scope of my video. Copyright infringement and all that. I try my best to be truthful on the matter of the faces - my personal feeling is that for the first three models, Hornby's faces are very much superior to the bachmann faces in their accuracy, but this may not always be the case from this point on...
@simierski Oh yeah speaking of repaint, I got a silly suggestion. Paint the nose of the Bachmann face red since its a clown face (expect its missing the red nose) and yes it will also look like Buzz Buzz James LOL
I can see the disadvantage of doing the Tug of War on parallel tracks. Perhaps you could hand-lay a gauntlet track section (Google it) on a separate board, to reduce the problem with the skew-whiff tailrope.

Lightninging63 11 months ago
@Lightninging63 - unfortunately that would be beyond the scope of my video. Copyright infringement and all that. I try my best to be truthful on the matter of the faces - my personal feeling is that for the first three models, Hornby's faces are very much superior to the bachmann faces in their accuracy, but this may not always be the case from this point on...

BRING ON TOBY
good luck Bachmann I wonder if we will see another clown?
leokimvideo 11 months ago
How did u repaint the Bachmann James wheels?
NykRivas 11 months ago
@NykRivas - I did describe it in the video. I may yet do a "how to" video on it.
simierski 11 months ago
@simierski I'm just wondering. Did you airbrush the wheels?
NykRivas 11 months ago
@NykRivas - painted using gloss black from Humbrol, brush painted.
simierski 10 months ago
@simierski Oh yeah speaking of repaint, I got a silly suggestion. Paint the nose of the Bachmann face red since its a clown face (expect its missing the red nose) and yes it will also look like Buzz Buzz James LOL

Toby vs Toby will be tomorrow right?
MikeD57s 11 months ago
@MikeD57s - no. One review video every 3-4 weeks.
simierski 11 months ago
I'm going to bet that the next review will be a 'boxing' match between Bachmann and Hornby.. if you get what I'm talking about.
You're going to do a versus video on the two Tornados? :D That should be exciting
Lightninging63 11 months ago
@Lightninging63 If nobody got it, boxes are square and brown, Toby's next in the reviews.
Yaaaaaay ;D
