  • I can see the disadvantage of doing the Tug of War on parallel tracks. Perhaps you could hand-lay a gauntlet track section (Google it) on a separate board, to reduce the problem with the skew-whiff tailrope.

  • Random question have you ever had any issues with your James ? ( the hornby one ) . My James is an original 1988 version and the tender suffers conectivity issues and the driving wheels on the loco lock up . Seeing your James belt round your fine layout hauling many coaches makes me wonder why my james cant even move himself ! But that aside these videos are very infomative top work :-)

  • @dopeyduck123 - Sounds like you should pull it apart and clean and lubricate everything. You might be surprised at what you find in there.

  • @JBofBrisbane Well his motor when it makes a good connection runs like a beast as shown in the vis his wheels on the tender are clean as ar his tyres. And his cogs move freely and are well oiled. It' the wherels on the loc that lock up and I cant see how it can pull off his wheels I have tried lol ! I can see any serews on them other than the ones that hold on his side rods.

  • They both look great

  • I like both James models

  • Bachman looks a lot better in my opinion.

  • i no y there is no coupling at the the front of the bachmann model as u said very rarely r the thomas tender engines seen pulling trains tender first. That is cus in one of the first episodes of thomas and friends i think tenders and turntables (something like that) Ringo Star says 'because it is dangerous for big engines to go backwards ' and that one thing was carryed on forever

  • I don't really know which James I like best.

The Bachmann Model looks more accurate to James

But I've always liked the Hornby James since I was little.

    :) :P

  • Are the Thomas models being driven by Chuck Norris?

  • the only difference from the bachmann james and the tv series james is that the tv series james's tender is connected to james.

  • the hornby models are too long and have wrong collour

  • @legotrainzman Legitimately yes, but you should also think about the fact that Hornby based them as their real-life counter parts (and parts of RWS if you read them), while the Bachmann range is based on the TV series. You could say a difference that people on both sides of the Atlantic would consider...

  • im really pleased with my bachmann james after i repainted it. did you repaint the whole smoke box of just the part that bachmann lef unpainted?

  • I have a 1983 Hornby James

  • @e2number1 James wasn't released until 1989...

  • 9:51-10:18 war

  • 10:02 James fell off lol

  • simerski...I saw a bachmann james reviw. when they opend it pop the bachmann james came in it's box but not it's origanl packge. and they had the same as you and it was not a set

  • I'm going to repaint my Bachmann James. How would you recommend I do this? (Feel free to respond via PM)

  • U should do. A review about gordan

  • 6:51 BACHMANN THOMAS GOT PWNED!

  • I'm not sure comparing the Hornby price against the RailRoad range is fair, as the RR range is a budget range using older, less detailed toolings to keep the price down and their James is not part of this range. I think the price compares favourable to other Hornby locos in their "main" range, which are astronomic. That said, I got my James around 20 years ago (or so) when Hornby first started doing the Thomas range, and he cost about £40 from a toy/train exhibition.

  • @TKTiger - actually TK, in many respects the Railroad models (though derived from older toolings) are actually superior models, with tender drives eliminated in favour of loco drives in all cases (5MT versus Henry, for example, A1 versus Gordon is another), and in most cases are DCC fitted or ready! All at prices far lower than the higher priced, lower spec Thomas range. The comparison is fair because it's calling into question value for money.

  • @simierski A fair and well reasoned argument, thank you.

I'd love to see how my Thomas models from the 80's compare to the modern breed, but they'd need a good service and run in first, and I lack the space in which to do it. I'd also need to find Percy's face, which I fear was lost during a house move many moons ago.

  • i have a question will you ever do VS videos of coaches like annie and clarebel? or brakevans? id like to know. i put on this comment at 11:32 AM

  • Will you ever get henry or emily?

  • Woops I messpelled cool sory

  • Well I checked And Bachmann james does not have a front coupling so only thomas and percy can have them so if you figure out how please make a video about it it would be so coll

  • I have a question in other thomas series on youtube there bachmann thomas percy have front couplings I think they give james frint couplings to Im not vary shore I'll look it up and when I do all tell you do you know how to do that if you do can you make video about it that would be amazing

  • Great :) What paint you used for the wheels and the smoke box ?

  • i like it

  • Is this HO gauge?

  • Actually Hornby doesn't have an aim for the Thomas models. To save money (or some other reason) they just take one of their models and give it new paintwork, a face, and in some model's case, an existing motor with a new body.

  • @ThomastheCameraHog They aim for the RWS. And i dont mean to sound mean or anything, but they do give consideration before just dumping a model. Henry is based on a black 5 in real life and in hornby form! =D

  • Ok, after looking at my Bachmann James I took a sharpie pen and did the changes made to the smokebox (kept the wheels and axels grey because i don't mind it too much). I don't need to do anything else with it do I?

  • Are you British?

  • @Stuingtion - yes.

  • @Stuingtion Also I really doubt Team Thomas could beat team James.

  • I agree with you on the front coupling on the bachmann James they should put one on because in some episodes Edward is coupled to the front of James to help pull heavy loads.

  • did you repaint the pony truck

  • I think Hornby keeps with the trains they were designed after, but the Bachmann looks like the trains in the show.

  • @noble3126b But you said that. I posted before I heard. Sorry! Good video though.

  • James looked cool with grey wheels and axle boxes. Makes the bachman James look, unique.

  • ha skise loock at my videos taine049 c

  • If price weren't an issue, would you buy Hornby James instead of Bachmann James?

  • @UnknownThomasFan1 - yes, on performance alone.

  • @simierski is that the case with all of them? just curious..........! :)

  • why did you paint the bachmann james?

  • @jrkaryn - because it did not match the character. That was the point.

  • despite the cost of the hornby james, I would go for it

  • i feel as though the bachmann engines are being cheated. take off the hornby traction tyres and then let's see who wins!

  • @TheMrbigtires hornbys are still heavier. they may lose some traction but still win.

  • Phenomenal review sir. I agree with everything, EVERYTHING you said. The Hornby may be superior, but I can't justify spending two, or THREE times as much, for a hobby. If my sons get older and richer, they are welcome to buy better quality, at a higher price, but for their first HO electric trains, I have to go with Bachmann.

Thank you for this very fair, and well done review.

    Cheers!

  • @Rammmathornnn - you're very welcome, good sir. :)

There will be a new review uploaded in the next hour if you fancy getting them Bill & Ben...! ;)

  • @simierski Fancy? I don't think my desire factors into this. Right now, my 5 year old is starting to get bored with the Trackmaster sets. The more moving parts ( coupling, and piston rods) on these will thrill him.

I subscribed, and look forward to further reviews.

    Thanks again.

  • Respond to this video... Also, do you have any idea when, or if, they (Bachmann, or Hornby) will make Hiro?

  • @Rammmathornnn You could guarantee that Hiro will come a little later after every character from the classic series will be released... It'll be very interesting though to see Hiro as an OO or HO model :)

  • @Rammmathornnn - Hiro? Not a certainty by any means, but he may be popular enough for future development. As I say with every character not yet made, an email dropped to the company will make them think more and more about a particular product. My apologies for the late reply, Youtube's email alerts have not been working lately.

  • can u do a bones tug of war the reds vs the greens :D

  • I do agree, One problem, TENDER DRIVE!!!!!!!!

    Feels so unrealistic

  • fun the all

  • the bachmann thomas trains are designed for kids, the hornby thomas trains are designed for the older rivet counter thomas fan

  • how did you repaint it? i got a bachmann james yesterday and to make corrections myself. would revel paint do the job as well as humbrol did?

  • I'm noticing a distinct pattern in the results...go Hornby and UK! :D

  • What is the exact type of black paint you used and how did you apply it onto your USA James model? Was it hand brushed on or did you use an air brush? The reason i say this is because i am tempted about getting the Bachmann one as it's cheaper, more TV authentic ( excluding the face as Bachmann USA seems to have reused it for their Thomas, Percy and James models. )

  • @GWR6029 - brush painted, enamel black, revell.

  • duck vs. duck or oliver vs. oliver

  • @spikemilliganfan there isnt a bachmann duck or oliver

  • i loved the bit where Bachmann James flew off the buffers!

  • Ok, 2 things: 1- 2 people must be arch-foes of James & 2- Thanks for everything, 'cause James is the hero who I rather pray to than God himself.

  • Cool. After selling my Bachmann locos I found myself wanting a Thomas loco. Nice review Simon. Most likely buying James now and converting him to DCC

  • Can u do an Emily vs Emily pls

  • @batkid222 Can you also do Edward?

  • red army? why not make them soviet james?

  • from 10:00 to 10:03 wow

  • Hornby and Bachmann Thomas: 2

    Hornby and Bachmann Percy: 0

    Hornby and Bachmann James: 0

  • wow....your repaint looks awesome compared to mines :(

  • @simierski thats ok by the way i seen it its cooooooooooooooooollllllllll

  • TOBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

    i can't wait another day

  • @leokimvideo - It's just uploading...! Then again, it's been uploading since 10.30 - for a 9 minute film, that's a very long time...!

  • @simierski i'm waiting up well past my bedtime to host it

    please HHHHUUURRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • @leokimvideo - it is apparently 20 minutes away according to the uploader...!

  • @simierski UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • How big is your layout?

  • Bachmann Toby willl win! Hornby F***ed the bell...

  • TOBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

    i love him

i bet toby will pull more views than all the rest!

  • @leokimvideo Toby is a good character too... until HiT screwed his persona up

  • do lady she better then lol toby

  • @123emilymason - Lady is not a model. I cannot review a model that does not exist. The character in question appeared twice in five years, and never again...!

  • @simierski for a character who rarely appeared she's much talked about, its interesting as I also get lots of mail about Lady, That character Emily is also very popular.

  • @leokimvideo The fanfic amazes me. There's so many accounts of anime, etc. based on her. it is beautiful that people have created a wonderful fanbase for her!

  • @leokimvideo naaaa i bet people only want you to do emily so they can watch you verbally bash the hornby model. (cause it is kinda bad)

  • @123emilymason be for you say that topkazfatt has a model, its homemade

  • sssssssssssssttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttooooooooooooooppppppppppppppppppppp dont do toby hes a lol

  • i hate you toby lol

  • you sed it was coming out at 20th of april

  • @MegaGreeny01 - yes, but I've had some problems with formatting the film. Bear with me, it is coming!

  • you sed it was coming out at 20th april

  • Toby?! Oh well, I guess I'm going to have to keep voting for Bill & Ben until they're reviewed.

  • @BrendamTwins - put it this way, I'd quite like to do the twins next as the Hornby Bill/Ben has a lot of relevance to the Toby video.

  • go to hell toby

    lady you in

  • @123emilymason excuse me, TOBY rules

he's a very cool brown box

  • you toby is not good

  • get lost toby

  • @123emilymason YOU ARE A TROLL . MAY YOU DIE IN HELL

  • @cainman02 trolls don't die, they actually live on forever

  • wwwwwwwwhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i want lady wwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa toby must dddddddddddddiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee now!

  • @123emilymason - two things:

    1) Lady is not a model in either range.

    2) as a result of 1) I can't review her. Sorry.

    3) Toby won the vote by almost 50 votes, by comment and by PM.

    4) I will be doing more review videos in future, so vote for any other characters you want to appear.

    5) Why not suggest I do a "how to make a 00 Lady" or similar?

  • @123emilymason Stop crying like a bitch or we'll throw you in the fire.

  • I don't like traction tires.

All the engines I've train without them have run fine. Seems like all it does is make stalling at points more common on older track.

  • @leeham991 personally I would prefer traction tires over a gutless model, i have never had issues of staling at points even on 70's track layouts

it should also be noted your trains will only ever perform on best quality track

  • @leokimvideo - a very good point on the track. Unfortunately, only thing that suits my needs for pointwork is peco, generally regarded as a poor selection these days.

  • TOBEH. !@#$ YES.

  • TOBY

    YES

  • @leokimvideo - coming very soon indeed!

  • It's April 20th, so what about that review?

  • @dcgitz - going to be a little late, real life has caught up with me! Should be up saturday I am hoping. Will keep you posted. If necessary I'll put a blog entry out.

  • thats today

  • which of the three review uploads so far do feel is the strongest, discounting the autoplay flogging from other tubers?

  • @leokimvideo - my gut feeling is the Percy video was the best of the three, but with the James video I got the mix of background music (when it was needed) right.

  • toby vs toby

  • Lemme guess. Henry vs Henry...

  • The Hornby James definitely does seem comparably over-priced. Though it's speed, fine detail, and ability to pull more carriages would make it a very appealing option even despite the extra cost. Very detailed interesting train review.

  • lady vs lady

  • @123emilymason There is no lady models

  • @123emilymason Even that should be common knowledge...

  • 2 thumb down tubers are bachmann fans

  • uk won

  • hey simierski,

i was flicking through hornbys new website today and couldn't find duck, oliver, stepney and neither diesel. do you know what has happened? have they been discontinued?

    many thanks,

    accadaccasuperstar

  • @accadaccasuperstar Yes Duck, Oliver, Stepney and Diesel have all been sadly discontinued.

  • @C0BO ok. well i have just recieved an email from the customer care person of hornby and he doesnt know what's happened to them either. he thinks they may just be out of stock.

  • Cheers I will look out for it!!! Reviews are great especial the tug of war

  • This is not a vote but can you do the follwing HORNBY vs BACHMANNs

    Toby spencer emily

  • who's in the lead for next reivew?

  • Another successful review. I Agree that overall, The Hornby model is supreme. In terms of price to quality, Bachmann can't be beat. (In my oppinion). Great job. I will give my vote for the next review: Bill and Ben The tank engine twins, which I see you now have.

  • When is the next vid out?(the uk v usa one)

  • @CJtrainman2898 - 20th April.

  • @simierski After that??????? Just kidding

  • Thats Tomorrow :D - I'll be lookin froward to seeing who it is

  • contest comment..!

  • @otom73 - wow more trolls, I must be getting successful!

  • @otom73 ah yes, this is a sign of a truly POPULAR video when those who can't achieve anything in life come in and expose their lack of IQ

feeling brave, come and have a go at me

  • contest comment

  • Since the voting is over now, when's the next review coming? And who will it be to be honest? Its probably Toby.

  • @MikeD57s - next review coming in the next week or so (aiming for 20th April).

  • i no this will sound a bit of subject but have u heard of the milwaukee road 261?

  • @kr4449 - no, I haven't, sorry. What is it like?

  • @simierski its dier ent from british steam engines but i might be able to get a vid up just subsribe to know when it comes out ok (i can PM u if u dont want to subsribe.

  • come onnn let go bachmnn trains of thomas and i mean alll

  • just heard this on the news..!

lady ga ga is going to do a song for bachmann, yep that's the truth

can't deny I've got a clown face that clown clown clown face

    sing it like the song..lol

  • @leokimvideo - this is definitely NOT spam - this is gold! XD

  • @simierski thought you would like that, dare say the clown lovers will spam it out

once a clown always a clown!

  • @leokimvideo - wait until you see the Toby video - already shaping up to be a complete headache...!!!!!!!

  • @simierski lets hope it's not a headache induced by the exposure to another clown face!

  • did you hear..

lady ga ga is going to do a song for bachmann

can't deny I've got a clown face that clown clown clown face

    sing it like the song..lol

  • When you are comparing the faces in the next Thomas VS video, could you perhaps show a photo of what the TV Series model's face, or the face it's supposed to resemble, when comparing the two engine faces? Doing so might help parents who are unfamiliar with certain details of the Thomas & Friends TV series see which looks more accurate..? Just an idea that came to mind.

  • @Lightninging63 - unfortunately that would be beyond the scope of my video. Copyright infringement and all that. I try my best to be truthful on the matter of the faces - my personal feeling is that for the first three models, Hornby's faces are very much superior to the bachmann faces in their accuracy, but this may not always be the case from this point on...

  • BRING ON TOBY

good luck Bachmann I wonder if we will see another clown?

  • How did u repaint the Bachmann James wheels?

  • @NykRivas - I did describe it in the video. I may yet do a "how to" video on it.

  • @simierski I'm just wondering. Did you airbrush the wheels?

  • @NykRivas - painted using gloss black from Humbrol, brush painted.

  • @simierski Oh yeah speaking of repaint, I got a silly suggestion. Paint the nose of the Bachmann face red since its a clown face (expect its missing the red nose) and yes it will also look like Buzz Buzz James LOL

  • Toby vs Toby will be tomorrow right?

  • @MikeD57s - no. One review video every 3-4 weeks.

  • I'm going to bet that the next review will be a 'boxing' match between Bachmann and Hornby.. if you get what I'm talking about.

You're going to do a versus video on the two Tornados? :D That should be exciting

  • @Lightninging63 If nobody got it, boxes are square and brown, Toby's next in the reviews.

    Yaaaaaay ;D

  • Votes are on...the choice has been made...and the filming begins in earnest next week!

  • Can't wait for Team Tug Of War: Thomas And Thomas VS Gordon and Gordon

  • A bit too biest, as the James one was.

The was clearly done by somebody enjoys the RWS.
