Actually, since Mobs can't spawn on transparent blocks, like leaves in fancy graphics mode, and also can't see THROUGH them (unless a spider or in pursuit mode), being in a tree is actually VERY safe, as Mobs also don't typically frolic in foliage. If your 'doorway' is less than two blocks wide a spider can't get to you, either. The only reason Paul had trouble last time was because of how easily accessible his tree was and the Creeper drew line of sight in that gap there.
