RTC San Diego 1991 CO 248. I agree that this is very sugar coated at least in the way the RDC's are behaving. However, I can easily say that they have much better training and living facilities than anything I had at San Diego. I wish I'd had the opportunity to train in this environment. I think that it's a much more relevant and practical training program that they have now versus what I went through.
During boot camp everybody thinks it the worst tme of their life. After boot camp everybody swears it was a cake walk. Thats how it has always been. Hindsight and Perspective is a helluva thing.

You may not get your "phone calls." Expect the worst, so when something good happens its even better. For all the people making dumb comments about the RDC's being too soft let me remind you that this video is a recruitment video. I went through Navy Boot Camp too years ago and not only was there alot more yelling but RDC's would constantly drop the F bomb in just about every sentance. This video is sugarcoated.
@MJB919 I remember going through RTC Great Lakes back in 1995. It was a lot more intense than this ever hoped to be. Did you guys ever have to "Abandon Ship"?
R u kidding me with the cell phones?? Granted navy bootcamp was a joke but i truly hope they have not become so soft as to allow the usage of personal phones.
@jt2816 The only time you can use your cell phone is when you first arrive and make your 2 minute phone call. After that you must ship it back home, along with your civilian clothes, and anything else you brought.
wen i went to USMC boot camp at San Diego it made this look like it was a little retriever barking my old DI used Navy basic Training to make us laugh and if we did it would be a load of shit for us
They're so nice. Guess it's just for publicity. My experience three years ago was similar + swearing + louder screaming + embarrassment - nice attitude.
Ha ha, I was in corps school and field med with Tyler. You didn't join to serve your country dude. We had this talk. But its good for the video I suppose.
Pretty much everything I saw in this video is reception... they are at the basic training base, but still haven't made it to the actual basic training yet... this is just a phase to get their uniforms, gear, and processing complete... based on what I learned at Ft. Benning, the Drill Sergeants (and the Navy version, etc.) aren't allowed to PT you and can't really do anything to you while you're at reception. Once you finish at reception, you will then meet your new and permanent Drill Sergeants.
ok my navy boot camp that i went through 9 months ago was like this but i think they forgot all the cussing and ridicule, and embarrasing shit that happens, oh and the sleep deprive and hungry first two days of bootcamp, they pick nice petty officers for this video smh
I went through NTC Orlando in 1987, and had a great 22 year career, including serving onboard the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) 1988-91. Good luck to any of you who do decide to join!
@Natedog jr. In airforce bootcamp they do YELL!!!!!! idk y ppl think airforce bmt is so easy when they have never been!!!!! The navy, airforce, and coast guard dont put the real thing up on videos!!!!! they dont have to flaunt to the world that the drill sergeants or ti's are tought... they prove it to us in bootcamp!!!!
I spent ten years in the Army and thought my Drills were gonna kill me when I went through BCT! (1982) This looks like my days in the Boy Scouts! The Navy instructors in this video act more like football coaches than military trainers. Thank God for our Navy either way!
I agree, Our RDCs used to talk like sailors, not like an "irritated uncle". I mustve heard the F-world a million times. And boy could they sound off!! lol. There wasnt an ounce of warmth that came out of the things they had to say. The only indication of "help" they gave you was the fact that you made it to "pass and review" and became a sailor. I agree with all navy boot camps looking so easy on youtube. When I went through, we had a 6 hour pt session and everyone was left with a bloody tail-bone from all of the sit-ups. Where are the people throwing up, where is the in your face wtf are you doing you F***ing moron!!!! Not once have i ever seen a pt beat down, or an RDC 2 inches from a recruits face swapping spit in a video.
They are waaaay to nice in this video. Our chief never talked in anything lower than a yell. Even the YNs and HNs were loud. The only time someone was quiet and soothing was when you actually saw an officer in medical during P week.
I feel like every service is for different people. Me, I'm leaning towards the Army, I just feel like it suits my personality better, almost joined the USCG, but backed out last second. I always hear people talk about "oh, Marine Corps Basic is the hardest".... but I think they're just as difficult as the next but in its own way. Plus what's with the Canteens? i thought they switched to camelbacks in '07? maybe just the other branches. either way I respect every one thinking about serving.
@bignigga60 Canteens cost $2.00, Camelbacks costs $75-100. Why give a $75-100 item to someone in boot camp who probably wont make it thru.... ? Canteens are easier to clean and maintain. You can disinfect them with soap. the process of cleaning and maintaining the Camelbacks are time consuming.
@bignigga60 You have to remember one thing, the Navy want's you for your brain, not your brawn. I couldn't join the Army, I didn't see the point of digging fox holes and sleeping outside in the rain. I knew the Navy would have me sleep in a cozy, climate controlled bed, 3 or more Hot meals a day, and a more relaxed life style. Boot camp is an initiation into an elite club. Boot is not what it's going to be like after graduation. Navy is a Kickback job.. The easiest job I ever had.
@Fiberopme1969 This comment disgusts me, as a current sailor myself. I, personally, view the Navy as more than just a "kickback job". To me, the Navy means working hard to keep the ships that serve the USA operable, and it is a LIFESTYLE, not a job.
And do you know what? I take pride in serving in the Navy. Whenever I put on my dress blues, I put them on with pride. And this one BUDS dropout we have in our department that talks shit about the Navy, I constantly scold him for it.
@SirSnivyofNottingham You whinny little tard, go join the Army. I was in the IT Department, we learned to work smart NOT hard. Put your big girl panties on and be a Man. The Navy is a Job, I worked and I got paid. A lifestyle is how you live, not how you work. I never worked a hard day the whole time I was in. I just joined to pad my Resume. I got out of what I put into it. I got my degree paid for, get to put VET on my resume, served during war time, Honorable Discharge.
you are so rite this isnt how it is and i am glad that my experience was not like this because of how they did treat us molded us into the people that we are today
If you ever had to do 8-count body builders or had to go to ITED, you were a dirt bag that couldn't follow orders or were too stupid to learn. You got out of the Navy what you put into it so stop being a Biatch and go join the Army.
@thorsflipflop No, we were what was referred to as a TOP DIV. We got rid of our IDC's after the 3rd week, never saw them again till Graduation. We got all the flags, won all the competitions against the other divisions and only lost 19 guys. We had no females. I guess you could say we were the best division in that time frame, 8-19-1996 To watch the NEW videos of the RDC now is shameful ! I saw the Ships where you stay and it looks like Disneyland, our Ships looked like Prison!
@Fiberopme1969 Never getting IT'd, lol. Even the best divisions get It'd these days, its not all about being punished its about physical training, and discipline. The divisions that didnt get IT'd are the shitbag divisions these days, who got easy RDC's and inspectors who went way too easy on all their inspections, Seems your division was one.
You do realize at some point when your ships were built they were indeed new and therefore "nice"
This doesn't show even half of what I remember. Just watchin the recruits at the airport brings back that nervous feelin I got when I was waitin for the bus to get there. I went through nearly 2 years ago. I distinctly remember alot more cussin and yellin when I was there.
@inlovetimmy I went through boot camp about 3 1/2-4 years ago...and im still in. I LOVE it...yeah there is some crappy commands but as long as you do what your supposed to be doing then its a lot of fun. You make great friends and bootcamp is only 8 weeks out of your entire career so dont let it scare you or anything. and some of these people are right...this video only shows the good parts and nice talk for families who watch it...its a little tough but nothing like marines or army.
This isn't the way RTC really is... It's a lot more getting yelled at, a lot more impulsive punishment from RDC's, a lot more strict, a lot more cursing, and a lot more drama from other recruits. Fun to watch, though. Cool to see how it looks from the other side.... Kind of. lol
@f4roxmysox My RDCs were a fat Hispanic MM1, a tall white MR1, and a small black female LS2 (our brother div's black, bald MAC RDC, was unofficially called our 4th and greatest RDC). They were all mean bastards, and brother div's MAC was crazy as fuck. And yet, they formed us in to one, close-knit and successful division, which would become 78 (we lost 3 guys in total) squared-away sailors.
Don't do what I did: I saw this video. Took bootcamp lightly. Got there. and HOLY FUCKING SHIT I'M SORRY FOR EVER THINKING BOOTCAMP WOULD BE LIKE THIS IF YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE SERIOUSLY WRONG AND GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL
@OlllieJayUSN Its cuz they have to attract ppl not scare them right away i kno they bs alot of it unlike the marines they just show almost everything but ima join the navy anyways :)
What the fail to tell you in bootcamp, is you go serve on a ship for 2 years, then out of the blue they give you orders to Iraq and you to Fort Lewis for 3 months. Then a year in Iraq with the Backwards ass army (no offense boys, just everything you do is wrong) Comeback to your ship, they dont even no who you are. Then you get out saying, wtf just happen?
Now the Navy accepts men who have sex with men and will punish anyone who doesn't agree with that despite what the Bible says will happen in Isaiah 5:20.
@Amplify2012 God's Word is ancient and settled forever in Heaven, unchanging, non-negotiable, the source of all truth. You will either be broken upon it or it will grind you to powder. Matt. 21:44.
@Occupy4now so, according to the bible, we've only been around for 11k years? people like you are the reason why religion sucks. it's brainwashed you:P you're a fucking idiot and quoting the bible is like quoting dr.seuss... it's redundant.
@Amplify2012 Stlll, you don't need to shit on religion at every chance you get. You shat directly on him when the other guy was just quoting the Bible in reference to the video, which is what he believes in.
this is the nicest first 48 hours ive ever seen...shit even at the airport they yelled at me...called me shitbag and fuckface...help us? shit they were there to destroy you! hahaha this video made me laugh..its nice to know the general public sees the nicest people on the base
these are not instructors.....they are processors... come in, process, and then go to your company and meet your instructors!!!! shut the hell up if you don't know what your talking about... And GO Navy!!!! USA rules!
ah my fucking head! I just want to bitch slap all those training officers or whatever the fuck you call it in the navy..they should be more like the Marine Corps
I love the Navy but this training is a joke compared to what I went through at Marine Corps Recruit Training. DONT HATE ON ME I LOVE THE NAVY BUT THIS IS JUST WAY TO NICE FOR THE ARMED FORCES.
The reason Marines "yell" is because they want "Every Marine to be a Rifleman", which means the Marine is supposed to go into battle. Actually, I believe the U.S Army should yell at recruits like the Marine Corps do.
Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard should have yelling to actually change the recruit mentally somehow.
@NatedogJr because obviously they like to keep their name of being tough up. There is no such thing as the toughest branch cuz all branches need each other... no branch cant survive without the other.
@NatedogJr Don't be mistaken. In the "real" Navy boot camp, RDCs, especially if you are unlucky enough to either be in a shitbag division and/or have an arsehole RDC(s), love to tear your arse out, then scream at you when your hand slips on your own sweat while doing 8-counts after having been ITed for hours on end. What you see here is "Hollywood" boot camp, which is to be seen by parents, DEP pre-recruits, and civilians wishing to join, or sailors looking for a laugh.
@MrAle313 No, it is tougher in real life. In fact, the RDCs in Great Lakes will actually find your weak points and exploit them to make your life a living hell. My weak point was 8-counts. Guess what my first RDC made me do often? Shit, I did so many 8-counts, that I could barely feel my arms, or move them for that matter. If IT is pleasant, but yelling makes you cry, they will fucking scream and curse at you, and IT less. This sucks, but it also improves recruits by strengthening weaknesses.
@SirSnivyofNottingham In fact, thanks to all of the 8-counts I did, I managed to do 60 pushups easily, despite the fact that I could barely do 10 before. The weakness of arm strength is gone, because they targeted it and exploited it, forcing me to strengthen that area.
Honestly, I would not give-up my experience at Recruit Training Command for anything.
@tlpass24 I could tell right off the bat that it was "Hollywood" bootcamp.
And on top of that, it is a mixed-division. Mixed-divisions are pussy divisions, and usually get an easier time than all-male divisions. When you combine mixed division and Hollywood, you get what the Navy wants future sailors and parents to see. Then, you actually get to RTC Great Lakes, and you get screamed at. A week later, you get the shit beat out of you after medical clears you.
@SirSnivyofNottingham true dat. Navy bootcamp isn't anything that any normal person with half a tough mind can't get through, but it's not peaches and cream and rosie hellos either. Don't go in there expecting to live any of these videos, or you'll be in for a shock lol
RTC good times. 5 min pump and dumps during P Days were great. Having Chief yell and 8 count me to death because my recruit handwriting sucked. Whoever is going to RTC anytime soon, make sure your 7s are like an "L" and remember to not fuck up the Deck Log.
@narutosasuke365 They may not show it in the video, but the drill instructor does yell at them. In the Marine Corps, screaming drill instructors is what films and society has depicted basic training as, but it happens in all of the U.S armed forces. In reality, no branch is superior to another.
@narutosasuke365 so you're joining the Marines because for three months out of your entire military career, you want assholes screaming in your face? Good reason. Have fun.
This is soo watered down its not even funny. The rdcs start yelling & screaming at u before you even get off the bus. If they're gonna make a video please be accurate!
@2014giovanni I'm glad someone asked about the weather in great lakes.I was there dec.83/jan.84(one of the coldest winter's on record) Thought I made a big mistake ,turned out to be 4yrs. of my life I would'nt trade for anything. good luck

Fiberopme1969 1 month ago

You make great friends and bootcamp is only 8 weeks out of your entire career so dont let it scare you or anything. and some of these people are right...this video only shows the good parts and nice talk for families who watch it...its a little tough but nothing like marines or army.
afbluesmurph 1 month ago
This isn't the way RTC really is... It's a lot more getting yelled at, a lot more impulsive punishment from RDC's, a lot more strict, a lot more cursing, and a lot more drama from other recruits. Fun to watch, though. Cool to see how it looks from the other side.... Kind of. lol

f4roxmysox 1 month ago
@f4roxmysox My RDCs were a fat Hispanic MM1, a tall white MR1, and a small black female LS2 (our brother div's black, bald MAC RDC, was unofficially called our 4th and greatest RDC). They were all mean bastards, and brother div's MAC was crazy as fuck. And yet, they formed us in to one, close-knit and successful division, which would become 78 (we lost 3 guys in total) squared-away sailors.

The reason Marines "yell" is because they want "Every Marine to be a Rifleman", which means the Marine is supposed to go into battle. Actually, I believe the U.S Army should yell at recruits like the Marine Corps do.
Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard should have yelling to actually change the recruit mentally somehow.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
NatedogJr 2 months ago
@NatedogJr Haha they do yell this is youtube video they dont want to scare people away for recruitment
iTzEviLHoM3r 2 months ago
@iTzEviLHoM3r Then why do the Marines let us see yelling....
NatedogJr 2 months ago
@NatedogJr because obviously they like to keep their name of being tough up. There is no such thing as the toughest branch cuz all branches need each other... no branch cant survive without the other.
A1Cgirl 1 month ago
@A1Cgirl I understand that, but its just that it would be better to see a "non-Hollywood" version of Navy boot camp.
NatedogJr 1 month ago
@NatedogJr Don't be mistaken. In the "real" Navy boot camp, RDCs, especially if you are unlucky enough to either be in a shitbag division and/or have an arsehole RDC(s), love to tear your arse out, then scream at you when your hand slips on your own sweat while doing 8-counts after having been ITed for hours on end. What you see here is "Hollywood" boot camp, which is to be seen by parents, DEP pre-recruits, and civilians wishing to join, or sailors looking for a laugh.

HAJamesPTobin 1 month ago
@SirSnivyofNottingham i thought this looked way too weak..was making me doubt should i join the navy or the marines smh
MrAle313 1 month ago
@MrAle313 No, it is tougher in real life. In fact, the RDCs in Great Lakes will actually find your weak points and exploit them to make your life a living hell. My weak point was 8-counts. Guess what my first RDC made me do often? Shit, I did so many 8-counts, that I could barely feel my arms, or move them for that matter. If IT is pleasant, but yelling makes you cry, they will fucking scream and curse at you, and IT less. This sucks, but it also improves recruits by strengthening weaknesses.
SirSnivyofNottingham 1 month ago
@SirSnivyofNottingham In fact, thanks to all of the 8-counts I did, I managed to do 60 pushups easily, despite the fact that I could barely do 10 before. The weakness of arm strength is gone, because they targeted it and exploited it, forcing me to strengthen that area.
Honestly, I would not give-up my experience at Recruit Training Command for anything.
SirSnivyofNottingham 1 month ago
@SirSnivyofNottingham I was thinking the same exact thing. Looking back this is a BIG hollywood production compared to what I went through.
tlpass24 1 month ago
@tlpass24 I could tell right off the bat that it was "Hollywood" bootcamp.
And on top of that, it is a mixed-division. Mixed-divisions are pussy divisions, and usually get an easier time than all-male divisions. When you combine mixed division and Hollywood, you get what the Navy wants future sailors and parents to see. Then, you actually get to RTC Great Lakes, and you get screamed at. A week later, you get the shit beat out of you after medical clears you.
SirSnivyofNottingham 1 month ago
@SirSnivyofNottingham Oh how I remember IT.... but it was so much better before lunch. LOL

@SirSnivyofNottingham true dat. Navy bootcamp isn't anything that any normal person with half a tough mind can't get through, but it's not peaches and cream and rosie hellos either. Don't go in there expecting to live any of these videos, or you'll be in for a shock lol

narutosasuke365 3 months ago
@narutosasuke365 They may not show it in the video, but the drill instructor does yell at them. In the Marine Corps, screaming drill instructors is what films and society has depicted basic training as, but it happens in all of the U.S armed forces. In reality, no branch is superior to another.
YouFreakinTroll 2 months ago 2
@narutosasuke365 so you're joining the Marines because for three months out of your entire military career, you want assholes screaming in your face? Good reason. Have fun.
