I love both American and British music, the 60's was all about the British invasion and was the best decade for British music and bands in general. What i find amazing about England is the size of it compared to America and what its produced, its crazy how England are so good , WHY?
Coldplay are the epitome of commercial rock, Oasis are anything but. For Coldplay to be the most commercially successful band of the 21st century they had to pander to media demands, and did so while being polite. Oasis didn't pander to anyone and did as they pleased. No offense, but I am American and all I can say is that Americans can sometimes be blinded by cheese... If you know what I mean. There are a lot of bands that are great in America, but even those bands don't enjoy the kind of success that they have in Europe or Latin America for example. In all my travels, I just find that foreigners are more cultured and tend to look at things more from an artistic point of view, rather than just a beat followed by an electronic bass kick.

Although I'd rather listen the music from the UK, There are an equal amount of bands from the 2 nations filling stadiums, so I think they share success :)

But I do not believe that a band receives the recognition of a great band without American success. Take "The Tragically Hip" as an example. An incredible band with A class musicians, but they are not popular outside of Canada. Now, had they achieved the same success within the US they would easily be thought of as one of the best in the world.

No offense, but I am American and all I can say is that Americans can sometimes be blinded by cheese... If you know what I mean. There are a lot of bands that are great in America, but even those bands don't enjoy the kind of success that they have in Europe or Latin America for example. In all my travels, I just find that foreigners are more cultured and tend to look at things more from an artistic point of view, rather than just a beat followed by an electronic bass kick.

@osalas818 I'm from the UK... I think we have a lot of 'better' music coming from here than in the USA like: Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Coldplay, Noel Gallagher, Beady Eye and Miles Kane.
However your right that there are a lot of good bands in the USA such as: Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters and The Killers.
Although I'd rather listen the music from the UK, There are an equal amount of bands from the 2 nations filling stadiums, so I think they share success :)

You're only talking about British bands, though. It stands to reason that British bands will do better over here, because we're in Britain. What about American bands? The National, The Gaslight Anthem, The Killers, The Drums, The Strokes. They all do better in America. Even Canadian bands like Metric, Arcade Fire, TPC all smash it in America more then they do here.

They've given us The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Oasis. But one can not ignore the fact that being popular in America is #1. America is a cultural melting pot. If you can appeal to that many people and of that many different tastes, you can be popular anywhere in the world. America is always the proving ground. This coming from a neutral Canadian

@TR1PACE5 Of course, all of those bands are outstanding acts. being popular in america doesn't mean they are more talented or less so if they are not. But I do not believe that a band receives the recognition of a great band without American success. Take "The Tragically Hip" as an example. An incredible band with A class musicians, but they are not popular outside of Canada. Now, had they achieved the same success within the US they would easily be thought of as one of the best in the world.

I'm not saying that the americans are the ultimate judges and whatever they say goes, I'm saying that America, with its incredible diversity and varying cultures, is the testing ground. If you can be successful in America you can be successful anywhere on the planet. And that success is what would ultimately lead a band to being widely accepted as "great".

I don't understand why you're discussing about which is the best band. Oasis has more history, they have 10 years more than Coldplay, but that doesn't mean they are better.
