...Yoshi's Story finally developed a heart to fill its structure with purpose, and this crucial element lies in the puzzle / arcade concept of the game : the challenge of seeking out every melon, sniffing out every secret coin, and defeating your enemies strategically - to build a ladder of high scores and climb to the top of it
...but then the fruit concept came to mind, and suddenly, all the missing pieces fell into place : the game got a new story, which further lead to the concept of a life meter to take care of - and the fruits would colour the worlds by introducing all these new ideas and challenges, including the concept of melons, which further expanded into the high score system...
...so the game turned out to be colourless and dull, with no other concept than running from A to B thru a set of rather empty courses; it just didn't work out with the design they had in mind...
people who expected yet another Super Mario World clone tend to completely dismiss the fact that Yoshi's Story is not a regular adventure game; it was destined to turn in a different direction, because its design simply couldn't match with the concept of its prequel : the levels are short, and the environment presents little challenge; you can only add so many obstacles before it gets to the point of being bloated...

Why the hell didnt nintendo gave us this instead of what we have now. Yoshi story was good but theres no point to it.
