it should be mentioned that the germans suffered heavy casualties during the evacuation, many ships were sunk, for example the german ships Totila and Teja were sunk on their way to constanta, as many as ten thousand troops drowned in one day. the crimean offensive mounted by the russians, is the first battle in the eastern front, in which the germans suffered heavier casualties than the soviets.

In fact, on Khersones peninsula remain germans troops (most of them) and romanians (more than one third of total troops) that fight to the last to protect the evacuation. On the May the 13rd a romanian recon hydro-airplane reported: On Hersones peninsula the fire ceased. There are no survivors on the sea.

The evacuation (Adler - Operation ) from Crimeea brought other tensions between Antonescu and Hitler. At the begining Hitler considered that only romanians troops must defend Crimeea and the others will be evacuated. At the german high command increased accusations "lack of willings to fight" of the romanian troops. In many aspects the situation were considered by Antonescu (romanian ruler) similar to the great battles on the Don and Volga in November 1942-Feb 1943: another Stalingrad

Marina Regala Romana (romanian navy) and small german vessels performed the evacuation. 120 826 people have been evacuated: romanians wounded - 4262,

germans wounded - 12 027, romanians troops - 32295, german troops - 46 402, local volunteers - 15 391, soviet POWs - 

2611, local civilians (soviets) - 6739, women (medical most of them) - 376, slovacs - 723. During 08-04-1944 until 13-05-1944 total loses were 57 500 (KIA, MIA, wounded), 25800 out of them were romanians.

aluston91, The Second world war did not occured due to willness of the peoples. There are not elections process or referendums on this subject. Hitler and Iosif Visarionovici are main responsibles. The POWs in Russia have been encouraged to marry with russian women. The Soviet Union kept german, roumanian, hungarian POWs until 1956. About 1/3 POW preferred to marry with russian women instead to work in a pow camp. These are facts. This is history.

Indeed, if Hitler had followed the advice of people like Manstein, Guderian and von Rundstedt we would probably all be speaking German now. Brilliant minds but sadly, served the wrong master if you know what I mean. Interesting to see how Hitler kept switching targets and altering his battleplans mid-campaign.

Granted that the US had the worlds most powerful industry, but if Nazi Germany had asumed control of the eastern front and be able to focus its manpower on one front I dont think the US would stand a chance, neither would the Nazis be able to threaten the US (if not with their research into the atomic bomb).

Even when they did hit the beaches in Normandy and the Wermacht was a shadow of its former self they still took alot of beating to dislodge, and this is at a time when 80% of the resources

Allied analysis during the war stated that when on the offensive, the allied needed a 3-1 superiority if they were to have a chance of success, the fact was that the Wermacht was probably one of the most motivated, lead and able armies of the entire world, one of the reasons they managed to fight a war on 3 fronts for almost 2 years.
