This sounds like it has a 5 cylinder radial gas engine. The new Hobby Lobby R3 is much smaller at 600 sq. inches but it looks just as good. Superb pilotage. This certainly makes the Gee Bee R1 and R2 look dumpy by comparison. The original R1 racer had to be that tubby because of the long-stroke radial engine. Howard Hughes used one of the first small diameter radials on his H1 racer and it made for a much slimmer fuselage.
