  • Oh YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats one wicked solo...the bass solo was bad ass too... danny had the sickest licks in guitar playing period

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Danny and his band about a year before Danny killed himself, WOW! What an experience, he was a true show man. He is missed.

  • Dannys the MAN!!!

  • Hi Super super super:):) pozdrowienia z Poland:):)

  • I'm With Jwade227 With What He Said and Not to Take anything away from Clapton and Hendrix But Country Guitar is always overlooked when it comes to more Popular Genres like rock and in my Oppinion it's Rock who can't hold a candle to these guys why do you think Rock Guitar Players Never Talk about Country it's because they Know Them Country Boys are more Skilled and they are more versitle.

  • Well, actually, nobody could carry Jimi's guitar case. Jimi is the ruler of all time. However, Jimi would have been in awe of Danny, and he]'s nowhere close to Danny's in techniquw. Nobody is. But, please, Jimi was from another planet. Danny was a human being and he surpasses all guitar players in technique. Noboby can come close. Danny would love Jimi and vise versa. We're dealing with apples and oranges. Jimi was the greatest EVER. So was Danny. I hope that's OK with you all.

  • John Sebastian tells the story from his Lovin' Spoonful days of hearing a lounge band at a hotel in Nashville and being so blown away by the guitarist that he was inspired to write "Nashville Cats." He said that no one at the time knew who Danny Gatton was.

  • Amazing!!

  • Great bass solo too!

  • sounds like john fogerty and srv combined

  • Sorry but Clapton is a master at guitar and so is danny gatton and they both play in different genres. So all you can say is you like one genre to the other.

  • Clapton can play the aminor pentatonic scale very well. He does that for 50 years now. What Clapton could not do is: any jazz, rockabilly, country, hard rock. So he consequently can not combine these styles to a unique combination like Danny Gatton did. End of discussion.

  • dannys the best of all time. but this band is just a bunch of duds, as were they all. if hed had an exciting trio, or 4 piece, who knows.

  • Out Of Sync.

  • I dont know how you can dis Danny Gatton . He was acknowledged as one of THE great guitarists by his peers such as Les Paul,Clapton,Albert Lee and many other giants of the instrument . There is no point to an arguement that compares one instrumentalist to another -they ALL bring something to the party and appreciate each others contributions. Learn from this !!!

  • so sorry scotty moore that this guy ruined a brill song che makes so many mistakes off key im cringing eric clapton gave you credit where credit was due by giving you the spot light you dserved no wonder it took 50 yrs for someone to give him a record deal i wouldnt give him a light of a cigar check out scotty and eric clapton doing a brill version of this

  • @MrWelshrick

its obvious your a kid who knows very little about music and virtuoso playin...

  • @MrWelshrick

ha are you on drugs, I vove Scotty but Danny was in a different league, no diffrent world, Try playing half of those licks!

  • Comment removed

  • @MrWelshrick I've read some half-witted comments on YouTube, but yours absolutely takes the biscuit. Scotty and Eric Clapton? A version of "this"? Good God - have you ever seen a guitar in real life, let alone tried to play one? You should stick to "looking after" sheep in the valleys, boyoh! Oh and just for the record, Danny Gatton was part Welsh... there you go, eh? - Forget about Danny Gatton, stick to stuff you know like Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones, pretty boy!

  • This is great. I had the pleasure,of doing a few gigs with Danny, back in the 80's.Nicest guy,you ever met.Check out an interview, with Danny.Just type in'' Danny Gatton interview''.In the Youtube search box. Thanks for posting JD

  • Eat your heart out, Geddy Lee.

  • Sickest bass solo ever banged out!

  • Guitars played here are Gattons Gibson Byrdland and singers Gibson ES-175 Goldtop.

  • @savofenno thats a Gibson ES-295

  • @JW56JW IT IS A ES 350

  • Comment removed

  • what guitar is danny playing?

  • @sirvidia Sort of looks like an Old 335 but not sure it is similar to one I thinks it's vontage from looks of pick ups, Bigsby on it sure sounds great but Danny could make a 2X4 with pick ups sound good probably without pick ups what a PLAYER!!!!,

To bad He left us a man that could play like that had to be smart, I duno RIP Danny

  • @2bwhiteproud it's something more like Super 400, it's got p90s. An es-335 is double cutaway and more recent.

  • @sirvidia i checked his website and I believe its his first guitar, an es 350.

  • sweet stuff :D

  • ADDED THE MUSIC DOWNLOAD

    ENJOY

  • master

  • Absolutely awesome Thanks for the share

  • I thought I was watching Johnny Cash....great guitarists!

  • @WhitneyPeytonMEDIA not sure what you mean by that. Johnny Cash, legend that he is, was not "known" for his guitar skills - he was loved for vocals, lyrics and song writing and his live performances. Watching Danny Gatton's virtuoso guitar picking did not in any way make me think of Johnny Cash??? Interesting comment -its funny how we all hear different things when we watch these vids:) JC was on Sun Records in his early days though..

  • @raindogred My comment was geared more to the style of music not his guitar skills (even through obviously that's what he's known for)....the song reminded me of something Johnny Cash would do...Give me a break, I'm a 21 yr old hip-hop artist.....jeeze!!

  • @WhitneyPeytonMEDIA Your probably thinking about Luther Perkins he was the one who played all that cool guitar you hear on those old JC records. Johnny played beautifull accoustic though.

  • great one

  • OMG, I never seen this performance... i have missed so much all these years.

  • Marvellous guitarst.

  • Danny's playing here is like Chet Atkins on some good speed.

  • They called Chet Atkins "Mr. Guitar".

    They called Eric Clapton "God".

....but they called Mr. Gatton "The Humbler".

    R.I.P.

  • ok guys...both guitarists are amzing...completely different styles too...BB King has a quote...Eric Clapton is rocks best guitarist and he plays the blues better than most of us too...look it up...now if thats not sayin something i dont know what is

  • I can't contain myself, I want to swing the cat around the room

  • I'm checking out DG for the first time with this clip and I'm not even a rockabilly fan ... but that was absolutely AWESOME! Good music 's good music, period, but when it's played by someone of this calibre ... WOW!

  • איזה מלך

  • I saw him at this time in 92' at a place called Tornadoe Alley in Silver Spring Md. A monster of a player..I think what he lacked the most, was someone of equal who could sing so that Mr. Gatton could back them up just the way James Burton had Elvis and Rick Nelson to showcase his guitar prowes. Gatton never had a singing talent to match his great playing..and if you don't sing yourself, you have to find someone who can to make the mula and survive. Clapton made it because he could also sing.

  • @musicmatty67 eric clapton can sing? what planet are you from? get a real life, he can't play guitar nor sing, don't be stupid all your life !

  • @billyp5201 Thanks Billy P..I'll try real hard not to be stupid anymore.

  • @musicmatty67 eric clapton is a piece of shit, can't sing, can't play gutiar, and they put that POS in the R&R HOF 4 times and they put Scotty Moore there only once?Fuck clapton, oh by the way I took many lesson from DG for about 7 years off and on, he's the greatest Player that ever lived. it appears your taste for music is Shit. yes please try harder,

  • @billyp5201 Too bad you didn't learn more than just a few guitar licks from Danny. He was all about treating other people with great respect and gratitude.

  • @musicmatty67 yes but anyone that likes EC is still an idiot !

  • @billyp5201 I never said that I liked Eric Clapton, I just stated the facts that he has scored some top 40 hits on his own and that has made all the difference in his career. Get out of the Ghetto and give this thread a rest.

  • @musicmatty67 Ghetto? and where might you live?

  • Put Elvis vocals on this and voila.....Sun Records. Great Rockabilly pickin!!!

  • @bracemachine09 yeah EGO is right! he didnt make it further because he was not accessible to the masses ...clapton beck and other giants actually "held back" and under played...too much over the top playing sadly turns loads of people off..ever listen to Allan Holdsworth? clearly one of the greatest jazz rock fusion players in history..yet he is barely making it as a pro musician..its really sad and lame but thats the biz....

  • @konshess: Your average person on the street does not appreciate the technical mastery and creativity of someone like Danny Gatton. It's a sad fact, though true. He's almost too advanced for some people to take in. Most people like music with words, and DG didn't sing. That's another mark against him far as getting radio play was concerned. If he'd been able to sing well, he'd have been like Vince Gill. He played so many styles, I don't think his label knew how to market him.

  • @bracemachine09 well they really go hand in hand..I know self esteem and depression was my Game for a while..best of luck to ya!!

  • outstanding. A real , obviously, hard- working pro who took his gift beyond the norm.

  • every thing happens for a reason danny never got the respect because he played too "outside" and quite frankly overplayed and hammed wayyy too much..dont get me wrong..probably technically the best electric player ever but will never come close to the understated players..he had a boatload of issues and his style shows his overcompensation for his lack of self esteem..sad..he is missed....

  • Comment removed

  • Holy Crap... I got a headache just strumming this fast.

  • I loved Danny. I am from Northern Virginia, so I got to see him a few times. He is missed.

  • Hendrix #1 and Clapton #4 in the Rolling Stone list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time - Danny #63 and Buchanan #57 - Hendrix and Clapton couldn't carry Danny's or Roy's guitar case! I last saw him at Club Soda in DC in the early 90s with Tommy Dildy (Hammond) and Billy Windsor (2nd guitar).

  • @jwade227 clapton #4!?! there are a million guys better than him lol

  • @jwade227 Dude Hendrix is fantastic in his own right. #1 for sure. SRV #2 Dany Gatton #3. Eric shouldnt be up there.

  • @jwade227 Actually, Buchanan was a fan of Hendrix, he did hey joe and foxy lady at A.C.L. in 1976.

  • Simply amazing - bless his soul!!!

  • Dayum

  • Nice

  • picky ricky... AMEN!

  • Bigsby= "ending stick"

  • This is Gatton´s GIBSON ES 350-T with singel coiled "soapbar" picups !!

  • sure do love the sound of those pick ups

  • Although this is a Gretch...it sounds tele-clone...any got an idea if Danny Built this himself,

  • @tavernacletom

Danny did make his own axes. He also did custom inlaying and poking around with his amps alot.

  • it just dont get any better your right ! simply astounding

  • Could it possibly get better than this? More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • This man SHOULD have been the guitarist for Elvis himself .

  • maybe he is, in Heaven

  • That would be SOOOOO Cool !

  • He's awesome, I agree, but without Scotty Moore, there wouldn't be the Danny Gatton we know today....and many others who listened and learned to his early Sun recordings.

  • Yes, I realize that. But I was speaking of when Elvis put together the vegas band

Gatton should have been hired.Nothing against Burton though.

  • @gittahfiend was Gatton being considered for that gig?

  • No,I just think he would have been the best man for the job.

  • @gittahfiend

Danny hated to travel which is why he is one of the greatest underground guitar players alive or dead. So there is no point speculating on this point. He would not have traveled to Vegas unless the King called him up and begged him. Danny turned down touring with the Stones in the 60s. You figure it out.

  • Actually, it was Roy Buchanan that turned down the Stones offer.

  • So true!

  • Great! And btw what a wonderful mean slappin' bass solo.

  • Sorry for my ignorance but who is the other guy on vocals?

  • @turbines123 billy windsor

  • @turbines123 it is Billy Windsor - a friend of Danny's and played with the Reasons Why a club band in DC in the 70's and 80s

  • GO CAT GO ! Irish Gatton pickin' Y'all.

  • 1:07 Yo Mick its me Rock.

  • RIP Danny Gatton.

  • Many thanks to the gattonmaster for making available to us DG fans all those rare club date dvd's-check him out!

  • thanks easyguitar!!!!!

  • wasyguitar many many thanks. GATTON FANS REMEMBER DANNY GATTON SUNDAY OCTOBER 4TH. HE PASSED AWAY 15 YEARS AGO.

  • too bad danny took himself out.he had so much talent.I always have danny gatton in the pod.rip

  • love the les paul licks

  • Amazing solo at mystery train and amazing medley!

  • Gatton is insane. Plays blindingly fast but is never out of taste

  • it's not even fair how easy gat makes it look.

  • To Gattonmaster:ah but just think what sessions they're having 'up there'! I for one can't wait to see 'em again! And let's not forget that it was the highly gifted Scotty Moore who originated these licks that Danny so eloquently embellishes. There ain't no one to touch him- what a waste... didn't the record company drop him after his album failed to sell? It must have been excruciatingly painful for him seeing third and tenth raters making good while his supreme talent remained unappreciated.

  • Dude. Appreciate your sentiment but learn to love the legacy.

  • I remember watching this when I was little, Glad to see it again!

  • so so sad that a man would decide to just end it like this. i pray for him

  • He was just too damn good. I have this whole thing on VHS somewhere. Thanks for posting it!

  • damn I want that Gibson es 295 so bad !

  • Try the Epiphone version. Not bad at all.

  • Thats not a 295

  • Comment removed

  • the one who sings mystery train has a 295

  • no sense in saying that if you're going to give the correct make... haha, i mean... it's just not nice, "that's not a brownie" is one thing... or "that's not lemonade"... but, well... actually i don't care... great tunes though huh?

  • look danny playing sun year's elvis!! great!!

  • I"ll bet Danny would have been great playing lead guitar for Elvis Presley!! It was probably one of Dannys heroes, and if Elvis saw Danny Gatton really open up on guitar he would have shit his pants!!!!!

    gattonmaster

  • Gattonmeister - LOL! I'd have paid shedloads of money to watch Danny play with Elvis - but to see Elvis shit his pants on stage watching Danny tear it up, how much would you have paid to see that? Priceless :-)

  • what people really forget is that no matter what version you here of any rocknroll track the original set the boundarys. remember without scotty moore ,carl perkins eddie cochran cliff gallop there wouldnt be anything to go off. long live those guys after all eddie cochran was one of hendrixs idols .

  • The Guv'nor Thanks for posting

  • Growing up in DC area, my older brother would hang out and play guitar w/Danny, Joe Barden (made pickups for DG & other artists). My bro had awesome skills himself and always said NOBODY approaches Danny's ability. RIP Steve/Dan

  • golfogac thanks for sharing the story. I love to hear stories about Danny Gatton. Man there were alot of people who wither saw him, knew him, talked to him, etc. I must have had blinders on and didn't even know about him until 1995 or 1996, WOW.

  • golfogac great stuff, I'm all ears when someone whoe knew or saw Danny. Tell me some more stories. Gattonmaster

  • I saw the ACL show on PBS in early Oct 1994. I ran out and bought the only 2 cd's i could find by him. I sent a letter to NRG records asking for a tour schedule because I had to see this wonder. His mother, Norma (as in NRG), sent me back a 3 page hand-written letter telling me that I wouldnt be able to see him because he'd just killed himself. I was such a poignant letter. It must have been cathartic for her. I could feel her tears in the letter. RIP sir.

  • @chrisvissing Great story...

  • @chrisvissing I remember when I was a kid, my dad would by guitar worl magazine. They always talked about him. When he passed it was a blow.

  • @chrisvissing

You have no idea. Danny was my grandmother's reason for living as she aged. once danny was gone and her record label and rights to continue to fund, produce and sell his music were gone... she deteriorated rapidly. she passed away a few years ago. such an awesome woman. She was as dedicated as anyone could be. You don't know the half of it.

  • Yep, thats why they called him 'The Humbler'...!

  • MOJO Grande!!!

  • freekin guitar rips my head off.shuda been a household name.RIP brutha

  • yeah..I read about 88 Elmira St...went out and bought it and it might've been the wisest thing I've ever done..his subsequent recordings weren't nearly so polished or diverse..he and Stevie Ray are my personal favorites

  • funhouse, surely?

  • Amen. That bass has them bouncing all the way thru the tune. Not just a bunch of goofs getting paid by the note. Everything meshes so well. They must have had a blast recording it.

  • I think only God could outplay Danny

  • GOD WAS CLOSE!!!!

  • no chance not even satan himself could out play danny gatton! maybe roy buchanan

  • Roy was great but if it was head cutting contest dont think he could keep up, if fact this is mentioned in the Bio on Danny. Man everyone who plays should listen to this guy it is unreal!

  • This is brilliant...faster is better!

  • I have a rare version with Robert Gordon playin' live BLACKS SLACKS, and folks... Danny almost reaches the feeling of Cliff Gallup !!!

  • Humbler!

  • as great as s.m. and j.b. were, i would like to think that they would have been pretty happy that gatton wasn't interviewing for the job. he is far better. (to me)

as far as that goes... if albert lee had auditioned, not one of the three would have had a job.

  • Comment removed

  • Albert Lee, Jeff Beck and Danny Gatton each have their own different style. To say that one is the "best" is to say that you in particular like that sound better for style. There are too many guitar players in the world and too many different styles to say that this particular person is the best. How could you put Eddie Van Halen or Lenny Breau or Brent Mason or John Jorgenson into the same category. It is impossible. Just my own thoughts as someone who has played professionally for 30 years.

  • Comment removed

  • pickyricky1, I agree. 'Best' is best left to other subjects of discussions. :-) There are too many artists that contribute so much, each in their own way. I'd go insane if I could only settle for one... Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, We are so fortunate to have their music in our lives

  • @pickyricky1 - You are right on, picky. We tend to say "That isn't any good," when we really mean "I don't like it." There is no "best" musician of any style - as Danny himself said, there's a lot of leaves at the top of the tree. Quality will out, though, and the truly great ones will live on in memory far beyond their years.

  • Isn't it strange how the greatest musical innovators are seldom the best technical players? You could go to any music school and find a better player than Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, or Scotty Moore. But none of them will change the way music sounds.

  • Good god could Danny play! He was the best, no doubt.

  • Danny gave me some of the most memorable moments of my life. Let's keep him alive.

  • i doubt whether we will see another talent such as danny gatton for long while. so sit back and enjoy the incredible music left us. wish you were still here danny RIP.

  • He should have been ELVIS'S guitar player!

  • The ones he had weren't exactly below par though, were they? Check out the solo instrumental CD's by SM and JB.

  • oh yeah! by all means. SM was the Originator

and JB is killer in his own right, but could you IMAGINE if gatton got the call Instead?

how mach more spectacular the show would have been?I think he may have been old enough.

  • Danny was way ahead of his time.He is so missed. But we are blessed to have these videos and his music. He has inspired my playing that is for sure....way cool

  • DANNY GATTON WAS NO JOKE!!!!

  • Billy Windsor is playing a Gibson ES-295 which is the same guitar which Scotty Moore played while with Elvis;

The Great Danny Gatton plays a Gibson is that an L5? it is a lovely hollowbody with triple P-90's.

  • Its an 1956 ES 350TD with 2 P 90s its on his web page

  • I think Danny's guitar is a '56 ES-350 (his first Gibson) with an unusual spruce top. The story that the '54 ES-295 is Scotty's has been disputed by Scotty. Regardless, great guitars and great players.

  • superb

  • greatest rockabilly player who ever lived

  • JEEZ its easy 2 see why they called him the humbler lol

  • this is really a homage to Scotty Moore who was nowhere near as technically gifted as Danny but whose licks were perfect and simple and timeless. if this guy had not shot himself - presumably because he saw lesser talents being recognised while he struggled for recognition - I believe he would now be revered as 'the guitarist' of country blues - not to mention his other 'genres'. What a waste, what a loss.

  • I agree with you absolutely, it was such a shame and a waste of an incredible talent. It seems to me that no matter how good a guitar player you are, you need to be able to sing too, otherwise you'll be another Jeff Beck.

  • Total Les Paul homage from Danny - especially the first lead break. Don't get me wrong; the guy could play the crap out of his guitar.

  • The tone and the riffs could have dropped right out of the 1950's-amazing incorporation of fabulous ideas without compromising the intregity of a classic set of tunes. I love the nod to the original "Train kept arollin" with the octave riff (high & low E octaves) towards the end. Danny knew every COOL trick in the book-no mindless amelodic wanking. RIP big guy. Americana guitar super nova-there is no filling that void. It's all over but the crying.

  • He still never ceases to amaze me, wonder if he ever got tired of lookin' at all the slackjawed guitar players at his shows.... Mmmm, and real tape slapback, too! Thx for the vocalist info.

  • Billy Windsor is vocalist on this tape and he is longtime one of the best Danny's friends.

  • Who is the vocalist ? It was the great Delbert McClinton on the record , but this chap don't look anything like him .

  • That first solo break Danny gets this unplanned look on his face like whoa that was cool... lol
