@84heroes1 the girl thanks Cagney (note the camera movement). But the other 2 master shots seem lazy; nothing happens in those two takes of interest; the acting seems like a high-school play. I agree with you about INTENT. No question; the aim was to have a slam-bang romp; but in execution it doesn't come off; it's flat. Can I prove this the way I can prove 5 + 5 is 10? No one can; I can't and you can't. Others might see those two long takes as "creative" use of the wide screen; I don't.
@84heroes1 Aesthetics are not math. Bergman thought CITIZEN KANE was a bad film. First, the teenage parts are awful, both writing and performance (tho I blame Wilder for poor direction of HB, while Pamela is just bad). The script and direction are television-sized. Consider too the two master shots in this final sequence, as if Wilder had lost interest and was just pointing his camera with little mise-en-scene.
