British cars got a bad rap in reliability for a few reasons - electrical issues & carb issues. The MGB (I'm not intimately familiar with other British cars) wiring harness takes a torturous path, & has few fuses, which often resulted in faulty grounds and harnesses burning up. With the carb issues, most people just weren't familiar enough with SU's to know how to properly tune and maintain them - most who say they never stay in tune have worn carbs with air leaks (bad throttle bushings, etc)
@TPS5150 you have a valid point, but most replacement parts from reputable manufactures ie MOSS have upgraded things like the bushes from rubber to polyurethane and the wiring harness is improved with better quality insulation.
I dont know where this idea of MGs being unreliable comes from. Mine never lets me down and I use it every day. Sure, it needs more maintenance than modern cars, but its 30 years old! How many modern cars will be around in 30 years in daily use. None I suspect. Those B series engines were indestructible.

Never had any maintenance issue with my MGB. I've owned it since new (1975), and knew how to take care of it.
