I didn't know Sly until 7 years ago, but I didn't realize I already knew them from all the hiphop I listened to, like indeed LL Cool J and Public Enemy. Sly RULES!
TO EVERYBODY BITCHING ABOUT TODAYS MUSIC ON THE COMMENTS.
IF YOU WANT MUSIC WITH SUBSTANCE THEN GO LISTEN TO IT. THE INTERNET HAS EVRYTHING ON IT. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS FIND IT. MAINSTREAM MEDIA ISN'T GOING TO GIVE IT TO YOU. SO STOP RANTING ABOUT HOW MUSIC IS CORNY AND MEANINGLESS NOW-A-DAYS. DEAL WITH IT.
PEOPLE STILL MAKE GOOD MUSIC WITH SUBSTANCE IN EVERY GENRE, BUT IT'S JUST NOT SUPPORTED BY THE MAINSTREAM. SO YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR IT.
@NinetiesYouth shut the fuck up. dope music can always be found. the only thing that makes music timeless is mass appeal. the only way to get mass appeal these days (in america anyways) is to sell your soul. your kinda right but more wrong then anything else.
truwe. sampling is just a way of showing what inspired you and what moves you. Its not like stealing the way many artists of the 50s early 60s were just raped and had there music pawned off to an audience that had no clue where the music originated
this sounds like a primitive grunge , anyone who knwos nirvana and alice in chains would agree that this sounds a lot like some of them songs heard this ...
It's completely ridiculous to say sample(rs) have no imagination. Like bhuj89 said, they're bringing it to a younger audience that otherwise would probably never hear any of this music.
i wouldnt call sampling disrespectful - in the opposite, they open the ears of the younger generation for the originals. It depends on the attitude which today's listeners have. If they ignore the roots of hip hop they suck - but if they wanna know about the culture, they cant avoid the beauty of music. That's hip hop history - knowledge
samples covers remakes they all enhance and build upon what others have originated its all about freedom ofexpression and showing what inspires you. Things get remade or recycled too much nowadays but the act of sampling is not in it self a bad thing.
I think Sly wants more people to sample his music, they have the best sound for a sample. Plus you get paid and people get to find out what the sample is from sometimes.
Sly loves the love. He said he wants people to have him do it himself rather than them sample him. He said so in a recent interview. His song sing a simple song is the second most sampled of all tiem and overall they are 4th of all time.
i dont know why some of you people think the younger generation know nothing about this kind of music. i grew up listening to sly and listening to al green and marvin gaye. so don't think all of the young generation don't know anything about funk and soul.
i'm a breakbeat collector so i already knew all about this, i do feel sorry for those of you that don't know about sly stone or in general wheree a lot of breakbeats come from, i love soul music and i can remember a lot of songs without having to be reminded where it came from, those of you that don't really need to look and study where soul music and funk came from, it's more than just oversampled songs and bits and pices, IE funkadelic/parliment, etc. know your music before saying what you thi
komjong,u gotta be joking right?please tell me that youre joking.lol.its the other way around dude...SLY is the one who originated this and LL sampled it from HIM.
LL didnt sample it, a backroom guy did and LL just laid down some shitty lyrics in a 20 min studio session, which the same backroom producer probably spent 2 weeks getting to sound like the version you know. But what happened too all the funky diggers that frequented the music scene of the late 60's and 70's that produced the music that is used in nearly all memorable recent dance and hip hop. Bring back funky diggin' afro niggers,LSD ,angel dust dig?
So many people don't even know Sly exists, and when they do hear his music, they think he copied Prince and M.Jackson, and Stevie Wonder instead of THE OTHER WAY AROUND!! Unbelievable how they could be so ignorant of music history.
A lot of kids have absolutely no idea. Mind you - I live in Calgary, I find radio stations in the US are better, and Sly is more appreciated - except he's never even mentioned on Alice Cooper's station - radio show. Even on this weekend, Woodstock weekend. Write to him on his website and protest.
This sounds like something you would play on Halloween or during the scenes to a horror movie like Nightmare on elm street or something. Funky as hell nonetheless!!!
Keep "Funky Drummer" as it is for it is classic, the long version especially. The groove in in "Funky Drummer" is different and depending on which version you have can be very jazzy.
holy crap this guy ripped off LL

More like 85% of rap beats are sampled. Other genres are heavily sampling also, from jazz to rock to reggae.
