That's set up. The peregrine didn't kill the duck, it looks like it took a lure from behind the camera. The peregrine's wing primaries were in poor shape as well. American wildlife films are never up to the standard of the BBC!
Yep that was hi-def VHS off a cable channel but I really didnt care at the time because I was not paying any bills, mommy and daddy were still in charge. But for the time I thought the footage was pretty bitchin, still do including the little guitar riff they are playing in the background, remember this is a copy of a copy from VHS. The camera angles were cutting edge at that time and Discovery Networks was still quite new. Hope you enjoyed the degraded Hi-Def from 1992 :)
The Peregrine Falcon has a body length of 34 to 58 centimetres (13–23 in) and a wingspan of around 80 to 120 centimetres (31–47 in) The female measuring up to 30 percent larger than the male. Males weigh 440 to 750 grams (0.97–1.7 lb) and the noticeably larger females weigh 910 to 1,500 grams (2.0–3.3 lb) Peregrine falcones can reach speeds in excess of 200 mph (320 kph) when they dive for prey.
@Mohawkxx The music was composed for just that scene sort of what they do for commercials, I searched for it when I first taped this scene as like the music set to the clip also. The people at discovery were unable to give me any information concerning the music expect that it was composed for the show by an independent musician. Sorry.
Nah, its not sad. That falcon is killing to feed itself and its family. It's not killing for glory or for pleasure so it can stick the duck head on its wall.
@oneworldguy The peregrine falcon has a very poor strike rate actually, apparently it's only successful 20% of the time, so when it tucked its wings back, i said 'Odds are in the ducks favor'
The peregrine falcon was handled by a falconer using a lure and training the falcon with the film crew, same with the teal duck it was a hand raised duck taught to fly next to the owner while driving on a motorized vehicle or a car, again the film crew was onboard the vehicle and the teal duck was flying right next to it just a few feet away. I was also amazed by this the first time I saw the video. Hope you liked it.
@godie666 You could take a month, months, a year maybe, of footage and then turn it into a documentary, or into a 30 minute short. Lots of refining and a large base to reach up high to a grandios plateau where you see the world, even broader, and farther than before.
@godie666 Most likely many different clips. The last bit where the bird "catches" the duck isn't real, the peregrine falcon hits the bird without slowing down by tapping it with it's foot. The bird was most likely called down to a dead bird or something.
@godie666 This is an old film so they didn't actually capture the falcon killing the duck. As you'll see they just recorded shots from the falcon in the same area then used some sort of aircraft to fly up next to the duck and record it as well. The falcon never actually came into contact with the duck. As for the last shot they may have put some bait or food behind a camera and waited possibly for several weeks for a peregrine falcon to actually take the bait.
Its not the cameras its a copy off a VHS copy so its quite degraded by the time I got it up to YouTube, I wish I had an HD clip of this but this is from the time before HD was even a reality.

Two separate sessions. The Falcon didn't actually kill the duck. Both were obviously trained for filming.
