  • My model 8 doesn't smoke, but my 5s sure does like that! It's got like new compression so the rings are good but there is always oil in the exhaust pipe.

  • @SuperKONR could be worn valve guides. my model L johbn deere has that problem.

  • yeah you ain't fooling around! Sure is Smokey.

  • Mine used to smoke like a cheap cigar, try Adding 6 or 8 oz of STP oil treament to old smokey's crank case and the problem will be Solved, makes them run like new agian, easy fix............

  • @toddkam i wish that was true, i now have this engine on my 1955 roto ette roto tiller which i use, it needs new rings. i have tryed both lucas and stp oil addatives in it and it didnt really help a whole lot. its just begging for new rings. so i am going to pick up a new set of rings for it and hone out the cyl. i recently redid the valves on it so they are all set.

  • good for parties, entertaining & keep the skeeters away

  • when it was running my jacobsen 2 stroke mower engine was alot better at keeping away the skeeters. my briggs here doesnt smoke nearly that bad any more. i put some rings out of another identical engine in it and its alot better now.

  • good to see a youth are still learning practical stuff! Get a lathe too if u dont have one, makes u a very powerful person if u can use it!

  • ive got a lathe. i just am still in the proccess of teaching myself to use it. its a big old antique one. ive never been able to find the manufactures lable on it, but i figure it dates to the 1880's or 1890's.

  • That does smoke pretty badly, must need new rings, that might also be what was causing the hard starting. Smokes more than my rally mower and that runs on two stroke fuel, even though its a four stroke.

  • oh the rings were shot. i switched the rings with some that werent as worn but it still needs new rings. and the flywheel key was bent i think. that threw off the timing and made it hard starting.

  • Oh yeah that would make it hard starting. Might not have had much power either if the rings and flywheel key were bad.

  • not a whole lot. but its only a 2.5hp engine to begin with.

  • Oh okay.

  • what the hell happened to us? why the hell cant we Americans make great stuff like we used to? nobody fixes anything anymore either they just throw it away and get another. we need to shape up as a people and stop letting the chinese build our crap. we built it better anyway.

  • oh i fixed this engine up. i put it on my antique roto tiller which had the same type engine on it. but the one on my tiller was in bad shape.

  • Awesome! love briggs & stratton motors as you can tell from my vids. Im australian but still prefer USA built motors!

  • @Astro29 i like them to. our country really did make alot of well made items, including engines. i also like alot of the engines made in europe. i have an english made engine but it needs work. as im sure you do, i hate this new chinese crap

  • does anyone know where i can get a float for that style carb?

  • sure, your local small engine repair shop may have one or can order one for you. they are a very common carb. its called a small 2 piece flojet carb.

  • hows the timeing? u say it kicks back alot and also well i saw a comment saying u put new used rings depending on what model now days is sumular u can find rings for it and cut them down to fit maybe even of a weed eater engine next time u tear it down measure how bad the gap is in the rings

  • it was the flywheel key. i dragged home a 1955 rotoette rototiller model T. it has the exact same engine actually it was a month older than the engin in my vid here i think. i took the best parts out of the two engines and the parts from anothers carb to get an engine reliable enough to run my tiller without burining to much oil, it runs pretty good now and doesnt smoke as bad as it used to! it could use new rings though! i have to top off the oil from time to time!

  • nice view in the video while you were starting it.

  • you like that! i had nice veiws like that in my earlier videos. i took a tv / video class in my highschools tv studio and i learned how to get good shots and the point of veiw is very importent. you want a good clear shot of what the subject is and you want a nice background. but i dont always make the shots look as nice any more. my tripod isnt a fluid head like i had in school which was awsome for smooth panning shots, so i rarely use my tripod. and i got kinda lazy.

  • "On top of old Smokey..."

  • put it to BDC bottom dead center and dump wd-40 and leave it for few days and i gaentee you it will not smoke anymore or 80% less

  • well i put a piston and the rings from a less worn out engine in it and it seems to be alot better!

  • this is funny i named my briggs lawn mower old smokey but it smokes alot worse than your example.

  • nice "jumpstart" hahah

  • I'm a Briggs fan myself. It looks great

  • thanks

  • just to let everyone know ...

briggs and stratton model 8 are nitorious for bieign smokey... they are always like that

and they kickback its all normal

they did all this from when they where brand new

  • the kick back is not normal and it no longer does that. for one its rings were SHOT!!! so i swiched them out for better rings. # 2 the flywheel key was partially sheared throwing off the timing and causing kick back also now fixed! this engine now happily poweres my 1955 roto ette model t tiller!

  • well these mtoors are nitorious for these problems

    :)

  • well if you say so but i have never heard that before. i have only heard good things about them. they are well built and easy to work on!

  • no im not sayn there bad! there sooo awsome! there one of my fav model

im just sayn it can be a pig to start lol

  • actually mine is now starting in one or 2 pulls so if you want to call that hard to start thats up to you! it was hard to start. but all i did was replace my damaged flywheel key and it made a world of difference!

  • wow! thats sooooooo odd man! u got a good one

they all are great tho! :)

i got one of the pigs lol

  • does it kick back when you try to start it?

  • only if u flood it and try to start it

  • mine floods all the time! my float valve doesnt work quite right. its ok when it runs but if you leave the gas on it drips out the bottom of the carb. but it no longer kicks ever! i CANT get mine to kick anymore. Try getting a new flywheel key installed and all your troubles "Should" go away! Mine did! i just have to rebuild the carb!

  • i just got an engine identical to that one a few days ago, and it smokes just like that one does lol

    ill post a vid

  • cool respond with it if you want!

  • I just posted it, but i couldnt post it as a response because the regular uploader doesnt work for me anymore, so i have to use the multi-uploader

but anyways, its there so go check it out :)

  • nevermind, i got the response uploader to work, so it should be up in a few minutes

  • Trust me. My 8 HP briggs smokes a LOT more.

  • i never said it smokes more than anyone elses? but it smokes worse than a freight truck! probably because the rings are stuck!

  • Didn't mean to imply you said it was the smokiest. It's pretty bad smoker indeed though. But judging by its age, the rings are probably just plain worn out.

  • who knows?

  • she really smokes like a bastard

  • but not as bad as you haha jk lol!

  • still runs good for the age...make a good gocart engine

  • nah its only a little 3hp. im putting it on a "Roto-Ette" roto tiller like it came off

  • jeez it smokes like a chimney lol, great old engine though

  • wow cool engine

  • Nice old engine! My grandfather has a Briggs of similar vintage. I've always preferred Briggs motors over all the other makes. Easier to work on, and they never fail me.

  • have you seen my other engines they are very reliable. i have around 50 engines. antique hit&miss antique throttle governed. antique 2cycle air cooled. antique 4 cyc air cooled vintage 4 cyc air cooled. and my 1940's inline 4cylender water cooled kohler lightplant 6.5kw. i am going to go over to my grandmas to try and start it hopefully this weekend. it hasent run in around 20 years. it is in exelent shape stored indoors in the basement. it was put away running excellent i was told by my dad!

  • Looks like the rings and don't you love when they yank on you in there tug-a-war of not starting as i call it my Wisconsin does the same thing. Nice engine though do you plan to restore it.

  • im only planning on putting it to work on a tiller identical to the one it came off of it just has the identical engine that wont turn over all the way. this engine usually starts a whole lot easier than it did, usually 1 0r 2 yanks and its going. the tiller is a mid 1940s Roto-Ette model t. it is the company that would later become the legendary Troy-Bilt. lets see some of your wisconsin.

  • cool and i will make a vid tomorrow

  • I have a model 14 that smokes like a beast, just like yours. Nice video.

  • thank you

  • Nice! Your's starts a lot easier than mine.

  • usually it starts faster than this it surprized me.
