  • I do shrugs just once every two weeks, heavy weight, just 6-8 reps, and my traps have grown huge in just 3 months. I say heavy weight, low reps for shrugs.

     Duitslond is actually correct, your trapezius are actually part of your upper back, but you use it when you lift your shoulders because of the range of motion.

  • Dumbbell shrugs are definitely the best way to do shrugs, I've build some pretty nice traps with this movement. Straps are good to use once you get stronger, holding 95 lb dumbbells for 20 reps can be tough :P

  • I just reticently bought a weight bench set and didn't have any money left over for dumbbells and I've been using the barbell weights without the bar to do shrugs .

  • @jissyk1111 small muscle groups require more repetitions because the range of motion is usually smaller, like calves for instance 8 reps is considered a low rep range cause the range of motion isn't great. Same goes for traps.

  • @JustSketch1 I think that this wont be effective , cuz u are using different weights for all that 3 exercises ! Me for example - for shoulder press I use 20 kg dumbels , for lateral raises - 6 kg and for shrugs - 26 - 28 kg .

  • Reverse shrugs on the smith machine hit me the best but I think that rowing exercises Are the absolute best because you hit multiple muscles per rep and you can use more weight. Upright rows messed up my shoulder. Many people use way to much weight on shrugs.

    So Im kinda using lighter weight so I do about 25 reps , will the results be lesser?

  • @hhhkkkhhhjkjki im gonna say yeah because 25 reps is more endurance suited, less strength and muscle gain. I reckon if you cant do the exercise to its fullest then just do another movement completely

I have huge traps now. and U want to lift more weight. Stop lifting light weight and doing tons of reps.. Thats so pointless and waste of time!!! Like the Wise ones say and its totally true "Wanna get big, Lift big" 5x5 is the magical number of sets/reps. trust me. 3 days a week not just 1 day hitting the same muscle group!!!!!! DUH!!!....keep + weight!!

  • @brandonlukaszewski nope not always.i think 10-15 on shrugs is good for example when i use 70 pound dumbells for shrugs and only do 5-8 rep i dont feel anything but when i lower the weight and more reps im able to squeeze at the top more effciently and i actually feels like my traps are working.but i dont know....theres about 1 to 3 exercises that i have to go down a few pounds and lower the weight to target the muscle but i gues high weight works for uandlowweightworksforme.

  • Would you recommend press behind the neck with barbell as well? which area do this exercise hit particularly.. is it the rear delts and upper back and triceps? And good toss up between the up-right row and side lateral raises.. i use them both from time to time In my opinion to the Lateral raise really hit them hard and theres no strain on the wrists that you can get with up rows also like it more cos i like to super set side and rear delts back to back for an insane burn and pump :)

  • If you want to target Traps best excercise to isolate those is sit on an incline bench setting 6 and hang the dumbells down the side and squeeze them up to your ears burns like hell but you get instant results. They be poppin out after that. Atfer a year I had traps up to my ears. If you like that look i went off that look after a while.

  • Basic shoulder press and shrugs are good but the 'behind the neck shoulder press is my favourite excerise coz u hit the front, side and rear deltoid all in one lift, just make sure u warm up first. But hey do watever the FFFFUCK u wanna do!!

  • Also for shoulders I do front raises. I like them alot mixed with shrugs and lateral raises. I usually do like 3 sets of lateral raises, 3 sets of front raises and 6 sets of shrugs. Like:

    Lateral Raise: 3x10-12 20lb/25lb/30lb

    Front Raise: 3x10-12 20lb/25lb/30lb

    Shrugs: 6x12-15 60lb/70lb/80lb/90lb/100lb/110l­b DB's of course.

    Just my .02.

  • Shrug is a waste of time, you need huge weights to stimulate traps with shrugs. Upright rows is a great replacement for shrugs when it comes to traps training. For shoulders I prefer front rises, they kill your front delts pretty quickly.

  • @stylecut9 i think its cuz you dont wana fuck up your nexk with hella weight doin few reps when you could play it safe and do lighter weight and get the same results

  • @stylecut9 think its because they are pretty easy to do, unlike the shoulder press. take the heaviest weight you can hold and shrug it, now take that same weight and try pressing it over your head on a barbell. for me, i shrug 2 x 16kg kettlebells. 32kg's on a barbell i could manage a few reps, but i havent incorperated that into my routine yet i need some squat stands. thats just my opinion. the heaviest i can shrug might b 25 per dumbell not sure, but i know i cant press that.
