There's rumors that Iphone5 will be having something like this integrated, naturally with limitations due to technology development, we'll have to wait to see..
@SnapeMaster Do you know who that is? It's Candice Bergen, the eternally cool, classy, incredibly sexy star of A LOT of things, most known for her role as "Murphy Brown." A perfect female counterpart voice for HAL (Douglas Rain).
realizes that SAL 900 probably has 50 whole KB of memory, but you think if asked to find the relevant meaning of "Phoenix" in the year 2010, her most likely guess would be Jean Grey.
This is a primary example of the IBM computer "Watson" at work. Being able to connect the definition of the word phoenix and the conversation to realize that he plans to restart HAL. Just like a subject and a clue in jeopardy. Perfect.
@Theriot6592 Right and it was interesting how in the novel it mentioned that SAL had picked up his intonations and spoke like an educated woman from India.
@RoulinBrooks LOL, good one! And don't forget the Internet they don't have mouses in their computers...oh wait...they can give instructions directly through speech. :( Nice try, though.
DID she make a mistake? The tutor of Achilles: a teacher of a powerful being. Which is how she thinks of Dr. Chandra and HAL. I agree that the phoenix rising from the ashes is the more likely choice, but it's a matter of interpretation. I like that she didn't get what Chandra meant on the first try.
This is weird considering there were flat screens in 2001 Odyssey. All things considered, I would trade our compact flat screens for computers like SAL and HAL.
Did anything happened to SAL9000? Here Chandra tells her that she will sure dream.. but when he says goodbye to HAL and HAL ask the same question.. Chandra in tears says "I dont know"...
Does that mean that he lied to SAL or that something went wrong with SAL and thats why Chandra tells HAL that he doesnt know while tearing..
In the novel its not covered..but again in the novel Chandra is quite diferent and doesnt tell that to HAL or SAL
Chandra's character arc demands that he evolve away from clumsy notions about the ghost in the machine after experiencing a real life and death situation on board the re-activated Discovery.
@sparrowlt in the book 2010 HAL had brain damage for lack of a better term from being disconnected. he could not speak nor could you speak to him, all interaction had to be done via keyboard, and HALs responses would appear on the monitor. He also had memory gaps. In the movie he could only understand Chandra's voice at first. It is entirely possible somthing similar happened to SAL when Chandra disconnected her in the same way Bowman did HAL. was kind of a chop job.
Then why exactly does he still have the name doctor Chandra... clearly an Indian name or atleast NOT an American name. The film makers really screwed up this movie BIG time. That's why it wasn't as big a hit as 2001 the original by Kubrick.
Sal is actually a Smurfette from the year 2010 who ate so many smurfberries by then that she collapsed into a power-light sized smurfberry singularity.
Even though 2010 will never be in the same level as Kubrick's 2001 you have got to admit and admire the work that the director has done to try to create the same element that was in 2001 and i got to say he did a damn good job in doin it

i never liked the "sequel."
2000 is a masterpiece,a real work of science fiction. Their mystery of 2000 was enough for me. I never cared to know about HAL's origins; he was activated on Jan 12th 1992, the first thing he learned was a song, "Daisy"- 'nuff 4 me. I never understood why they made a sequel.
I dunno, I do like this film but it looks like it was made in the eighties whereas 2001 looks timeless. That might be because it was made during my lifetime with actors I easily recognise (Scheider, Lithgow etc.) or maybe that the technology envisioned in 2001 was scarily accurate. Either way, I wish Tom Hanks would get on with adapting one or both of the last chapters of this quadrilogy.
hal...lost it..becaue of human error..the best minds created hal...but they lefts something out..they lied to him...a human flaw in his programming...never programmed the concept of a lie...or how to dal with it in his lil neuorobrinstem...so that s the reason he lost it...and..what they encoutered on.bchaoooou;chiZchOed.svh
love the relationship they have and the respect he shows to HAL and SAL. The idea that anything, machine or animal can become self aware with intelligence and the possibility of dreaming is not crazy. Arthur C Clarke was a genius!
Funny...he's supposedly talking to this super sophisticated computer, and yet look how grungy he's dressed and how cluttered his office is. Plus he's typing on an ancient phosphor screen! Maybe you can't judge a whole movie from a single clip, but this seems like a terrible letdown from the original 2001: A Space Odyssey. Then again that shouldn't be surprising, as sequels rarely live up to the originals.
While it is true that the technology is out of date, the same is true with most old scifi movies/books. For example, HG Wells' tripods would have lasted five minutes against the modern US military. I wonder what they will make fun of in ten years...
I also take issue with your comments about his cluttered office and bad personal appearance. If you've seen many labs that have the latest technology, the workspace is often cluttered and the people don't necessarily wear the finest suits.
Yeah, but I was comparing it to the original movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the computers, clothing and society looked more advanced than they do in this movie, which is supposedly set in a later date than the original!
Yeah, but 2001 is set on a space station and on the Discovery. Of course, things are bound to be neat and tidy. But there will always be clutter and computer geniuses (some of them) will always dress like slobs. I think it made 2010 much more realistic. Who wants the whole world to look super-sterile a la Space 1999?
Don't know if this had an effect on the movies, but the culture of computing dramatically changed between the two movies. The '60s belonged to companies like IBM with clean floors and men in suits. The '80s belonged to Unix, with clutter and Unix beards galore.
One day Dr.Chandra came back from work exhuasted but eager to plug into SAL 9000. As Dr.Chandra prepared his I/O device he heard funny noises from inside SAL 9000. To his dismay he turned on the monitor to see that SAL 9000 was interfacing with an older program named Windows Vista who she met online in a forgotten directory of old programs.
Dr.Chandra cursed the day he opened the firewall and let SAL 9000 outside the mainframe!
I think we're already near the level of AI to have a conversation. Just not the philosophical, rhetorical, or sarcastic type, most answers to those are just simulations or prerecorded ones.
I love this film. I remember being a messenger and having to go to peter hyams office (near the 3rd st promenade in santa monica) few times and meeting him. I told him 2010 is one of my fav films. He smiled and said thank you. Certainly, one of the best photographed sci fi films:a kinda haze and soft lighting that is rare in hi tech films like 2010.
I could be wrong, but I think Candice Bergen was the voice of Sal.
