The Spartans or any other army that uses the shield wall and spear formation would NEVER, EVER break formation. The strength is in the tightness of the group. To open your shield to stab or to seperate from the formation means death to you and/or your commrads. Oh well, it looks cool :-D

why do you think he only took 300 warroirs out of the 5,000 strong spartan army. Leonidas knew it was a suicide mission and accroding to herodotus the spartan king (Leonidas) could have a body guard of up to 299 hence the 300. And he did not let any sons accompany him as he wanted to family blood lines to be held. Thermopylae was a holding attempt whilst the athenians attmpted to evacuate the city and that it why they arnt there. accoridng to the thermistoclean decree of course

The mainland of Greece and the other greek regions were never conquered by the Persians. Tell me which are these 1000 years: 500 BC - 500 AD for example?

Also, the Turks had Greece (or whatever we say Greece today) for 400 years, that's a lot of time but no 1000 years of course.
