When you catch a tram/train/bus, sit/group yourselves together with other Indians. Even if you don't know them. Say last carriage on the train. Don't scatter around. This will provide you some protection while you're on the vehicle.
This also benefits non-Indians as well. At least, non-Indians can easily avoid you for whatever reason(s). It's a win-win situation for everyone.
