Sorry for posting this again but I think it's important. It may sound crazy to the vast majority of people on this but this song was actually written by my great grandfather, Tomás Ó Colmáin, who lived in Conamara for several years and established the school, Coláiste Chonnacht near Spiddal. He sold the rights to the Gill and Macmillan publishing company and it has since been credited to Pádraig Pearse. His name is on the earliest versions of the song. SPREAD THE WORD!
That's a really nice song. I love Ireland and the Irish language, sad to say, I am thoroughly English and have never been to Ireland :( I'm always listening to beautiful Irish songs like this so, I think they're wonderful

@deeneebee D: i just google translated it so i dont know if its accurate or not( pretty sure its not) but it gives the youtube people some imagery and a lil something to work with. thanks for listening. gawd i still love this song..so well composed....
@mopo112 Most Irish people can hold a simple conversation in Irish/Gaelic. However, only about 100,000 people use the language on a day to day basis. I'm proud to say I'm a native speaker and at home, we only speak Irish.
@Sportymike i do notice an increase in young parents raising their children in Irish. All Irish schools are becomming popular again aswell. im very happy to see this happening, it would be a dieing shame if the language comes to an end :)
Such a beautiful song, and it's not as though having an extract in another song has ruined its reputation because Sleepyhead is also a great song. Having the extract from this in makes it all the better!
@ZachM176 Awwwww, you're not a load of old shit. :( Go get some help, dude...you really shouldn't talk about yourself like that...that's heartbreaking
It's like the music of angels! such an origonal sound that still works today.
when I first heard the sample I wasn't shure if it was celtic, oriental, english, or indian (both american and asian). It truely trancends cultures, it sounds so un-Irish.
@aciddmc thats exactly what i was thinking...i wanted to know the original and it wasnt posted on youtube so i pulled a double kill! (mw2 :D) thanks for listening....this is indeed beautiful music.
I really really really really dont listen to this sorta music but i heard it on lbp 2 then i got into passion pit, and I always wonder what the voice was and I found it! KUDOS TO ME!!
A legend during her life-Mary O'Hara, the best ambassador Ireland could have wished in the past 55 years.Mary was born in 1935 and started to sing the old Irish folksongs at the young age of abt 20 The purity of the voice with just her own harp,no technical additions(How far have we come nowadays!) At 2.45 min. Mary shows her classical qualities, not only her stunning breathcontrol, but by repeating the last verse in a beautiful pianissimo.A great singer/musician of historical value
My Irish Studies teacher showed up this video in class. and some of us giggled at this comment. It was neat how this was sampled in that Passion Pit song.
@jlamberto I think the scotish use gaelic as in they spell their language that way but its pronounced Gaalik I've probably confused a load of Americans with the comment as they probably didnt scotish ppl spoke a form of Gaelic too anyway I'm English and I've always been interested in Irish Gaelige Scots Gaalik and Welsh Cymru. Are you a native Irish speaker or are you irish but English is ur first language?
@jlamberto So clever patronizing Americans, aren't you, you fucking cabbage. In case you're too much of a arrogant, unaware cunt, your fucking people make up a large percentage of the stupid rednecks in the U.S. so don't get too happy now thinking your countrymen are superior; you're fucking one and the same says I, an Armenian living in the U.S. Do you think the food, air, and water in North America impairs people's intellect or something?
@jlamberto to the best of my knowledge gaelic languages is just a general term used for Irish, Welsh and whatever the Scotts had :P like germanic languages cover Dutch german etc ....
Thank-you Mary, your music and your life is inspiring to many. What a legend!!
