In response to your description: it was because the people who grew up on that stuff were becoming ad executives. So naturally they'd want to hear music they were familiar with. Look at the films too: Stand By Me (60s), Porky's (50s), BTTF (50s), Xmas Story (40s). Now we're seeing modern commercials using 80s music. It's a funny cycle.
