@WenaxBkn310 Hi there. This specific version had a top speed of 241.4 km/h, which I believe was pretty good for the time. The same-year Ferrari 308 GTB, which was lighter, more expensive and made a little more power, only went 15km/h faster.
Tonight, I just walked out of a little liquor store, after having looked up prices of Corvette C4s. As I walk out, a silver, limited edition drives by and parks right around the corner. I talked to the driver who wants to sell it. I'll be broke, but dammit, I loved the sound, and I just can't forget that baby.
Hey, can anyone tell me what these cars are like for tall people? I'm 6ft3 and my legs are the longer part of my body (think daddy long legs). Also, I have size 11 feet, so are the footwells big enough? From the pics I've seen they look quite small!
@nintendo007 It's no problem at all. The only issues I've found is car park barriers (they're on the wrong side), so you have to either lean across or get out, and sometimes overtaking can be tricky - if you can't see 'through' the vehicle in front, i.e. it's a truck, you either have to wait until you can see the road ahead from a bend, drop back enough to see past, or dart out. Never had any problems, though, fortunately!
@302guitarplayer Hi 302, sorry for taking ages to get back. My memory's a bit hazy as it's been such a long time - but operation of the overdrive should be fully automatic, initially. You can switch it in and out using the button on the gearstick, if you need to do it manually, or if you turn it off once it should stay off, if I recall correctly. You should see a little orange 'D' on the panel above the radio when it's on...
@302guitarplayer ......sometimes they get modified though, so they don't come on automatically. It's worth remembering to put the clutch in as well when you engage it, like changing gear, just to give the overdrive unit an easier time. Let me know how you get on!
What was the first year that the L98 was stock with the vettes? My friend who has a 1990 says that 1990 is the first year they came stock, but this 86 has one also??
@demolitionbeats1 Hi there! The L98 was stock from '85, replacing the older Crossfire V8 - then that was replaced by the more potent 300bhp LT1 in '92. They went through a facelift in 1990 - which is what he's probably thinking of - but the L98 engine remained for a few more years :-)
@LashoutUK Hey thanks for the comment, i understand now, if im gonna get an older vette than i will probably do the 1992+ cuz i like the newer interior but hell ide take the 85 too haha
@Turtle889 Hey up. The overdrive does (from the factory) operate automatically, so you don't need to change gears to get another ratio. You get the best drive, however, (and the longest life from the overdrive unit) by switching it manually and declutching when you engage or disengage it.
@xxsolidsteelxx Haha, yes, it is very much a love-it-or-hate-it thing. I wasn't sure about it at first, as I found it harder to read at a glance - but after a while I caught on. Do like it now though, like being in a bomber or something at night :-D
A little advice from a 23 year '86 z51 owner.... the A/C head high pressure switch controls the engine cooling fan, which almost never runs. GM designed this engine to run on the verge of boilover for emissions reasons. Way too hot, the heat destroys the wiring harness and alternator. Run a wire from sensor to switch under the dash and by jumping that fan runs all the time vehicle is below 40 mph and above 160 degrees. Pick up some hp and no negatives except a fan motor once in awhile for $27.
@neatoauctions Hah, thanks, I guess - but there was no effort put into editing this as it is just a series of clips to show people what the car sounds like :-)
One day I'll get around to making a proper video! :-D
Thanks! Can't wait to own another one - hopefully this year, if other projects don't get in the way - but one will take a spot on the drive somepoint soon.
Definitely be a 6-speeder this time though, so being picky it'll probably have to come from the States as there aren't many 6 speed L98's with the digi-dash over here :)
yea i had an 86 vette with the 4 speed auto (wish it were manual) a few years ago, i loved that car tho. but with lots of problems from previous owner its out of commission.
i have a 95 lt1 ill put a video up soon if ya wanna check it out later, just haven't gotten around too it.
Around town and on short trips about 18 litre/100km - on the motorway about 10-11.
You can get quite a lot more by fitting a performance exhaust, a decent filter (ITG for example) and by uprating the ignition system slightly with a decent coil and better plugs. One of the club members that has done just that tends to get about 9 litre/100km on the motorway!
The later ones are more efficient - the ones with the 'LT1' engine. Mine used to average 10.5 litre/100km - and automatic!
The 4+3 - well, it was a computer controlled overdrive that would kick in once a certain RPM had been reached (then stay in, unless you accelerated hard). Normally it'd operate across 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I think it used to engage at about 2000rpm and above a certain road speed.
There was a switch on top of the gearstick though, so you could engage - or disengage - it as desired - or just turn it off and use it like a 4 speeder.
Pretty fun but a bit clunky and could occasionally disengage ....
.....under acceleration during cornering, which would provide a rather entertaining (or alarming) moment of power oversteer.....
It was quite a charming thing, in a 'retro' way and I did like it (coming from my Triumphs with a similar overdrive). They are quite reliable but once you start having problems with them, it gets expensive. Taking care of it (like clutching when going to engage it) prolongs the unit's life considerably it seems.
A straight 5 speed or 6 would be a much better 'box!
Don't know, unfortunately - they came with the car, as they're a requirement in the UK. I have seen them on UK ebay a few times, but I suspect one of the UK suppliers like Claremont or Eurovettes could source them for you?
Yea, there's a big club though and they have a strong following. I'd never even seen one in the flesh until I bought this one (blind!). A year later after I sold it I was sitting in my flat, looked out and saw a bright red one flying around the local ring road! Seen a couple since, too.
Never bumped into another on the road, though. I will have another soon.
Thanks - was a real sweet machine. I never had any trouble with the overdrive - on mine I found that if you turned it off when you first started the car, it'd stay off - I think someone had over-ridden it before because you could engage it in first too.
Worked really well though and added a bit of period charm. Quite fun too, flicking in and out of it - although I tended to clutch when engaging and disengaging it, just to take the load off.
Nice Vette you have right there. :) Seems to be in very nice condition for me. I've heard many people mocking on that "spaceship" style dash, but IMO it gives you just a "Knight Rider" kinda feeling. :D But £3-5k (3190-5320€) for a decent C4? Man... I consider that pretty bargain and it seems that I'm living in a whole lot of wrong country. :D Here in Finland those C4's in decent condition are priced between £6480-11.750... :( If you'll find one for £3-5k here, you're damn lucky. :D
Cheers (and Merry Christmas!)! I didn't find the footwell too cramped, for normal driving - but I did find that the transmission tunnel shape prevented accurate heel-toe work, for me, at least (this was a manual). Too much chance of catching my foot on the tunnel! :D
You can pick up a tatty - but usable - C4 for about £3k now (with the Crossfire or L98 V8). In some respects though, it's worth spending a little more (£4-5k) to get a really nice one as it'll be much more pleasant to own.
If you're looking to spend ~5k, you might even get (as I did) a later one with a revised interior and the 300BHP LT1 V8 - but the earlier ones have the funky dash and more bottom end grunt so it's swings and roundabouts....
What exactly is a 4+3? Is it a four-speed manual with an overdrive unit attached to the back of it? Not much seems to be said about them, and I've heard that less than hardcore enthusiasts don't like them much.
Its good to know u UK folks actually LIKE american V8's! I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 with the same engine thats in that vette! Well, almost the same! I think the Cam has a slight difference and the Heads on the vette are aluminum, but everything else, Identical!
They're great! So much so, that after selling this one I bought a later '95 C4 (no videos yet though). It's much quicker, but I think I prefer the earlier one somehow.
Have to wait till I see the right colour/transmission combination before I get another 80's one though I think....
Hey ! Im british and I like american cars. I will admit that you made (and still make) a lot of shit, but i will forever love the 80's Ford LTD and Chevy Caprice.
Agreed. BUT, we're getting a LOT better. US automakers are taking performance cues from Europe. The '08 CTS is the first proof of this. Give us a look in 2 years or so.
Thanks for the reply, mate. Then again us british can't boast much...Our motor industry has been sold down the river to europe by consecutive governments. Be glad that your country still has one. Cheers again!
Yea, possibly not a bad idea! She'll return around 25MPG on a run though, so not bad to live with at all.........The noise makes up for it (and the looks).
Ironically, the faster you go (within reason), the more efficient it gets as well!
"Do you have a reason for speeding, Sir?"
"Er, yes Officer - I was trying to save the planet!"
The flashing light on the RPM gauge is the 'upshift for max economy' light which illuminates whenever it thinks best for you to change to get the best economy.
Oddly though mine only illuminates the 'upshift' section when driving, not the full text - I don't know whether that's standard or not!
I have owned this car for about 6 months now but have just sold it, as I'm looking for an automatic or 6 speed one - as I didn't get on with the 4+3 transmission this one had!
The clutch on the 4+3 cars are the biggest bitch ever known to humanity! My Dad's 4+3 1985 car doesn't have the 'upshift for max economy' thing. It's probably an option, or it's only available in the UK. Maybe it came out in 1986.

madtownmadman 3 years ago
Yup that's right! Operates on 2nd, 3rd and 4th by default, automatically - although you can toggle it as desired.
On auto mode it's pain because it kicks in and out at all the wrong times usually, loading the engine up or kicking the tail out.
Using it manually though and it's a good laugh, although there is excessive throw on the shifter. The ODs can give trouble, now and then, mind.
A decent 5 or 6 speeder would be better but it's got a bit of period charm.

FUNNY! You don't see very many of these cars in the UK. What's with that flashing light on the rpm gauge? How long have you owned this car?

The flashing light on the RPM gauge is the 'upshift for max economy' light which illuminates whenever it thinks best for you to change to get the best economy.
Oddly though mine only illuminates the 'upshift' section when driving, not the full text - I don't know whether that's standard or not!
I have owned this car for about 6 months now but have just sold it, as I'm looking for an automatic or 6 speed one - as I didn't get on with the 4+3 transmission this one had!
Cheers!

The clutch on the 4+3 cars are the biggest bitch ever known to humanity! My Dad's 4+3 1985 car doesn't have the 'upshift for max economy' thing. It's probably an option, or it's only available in the UK. Maybe it came out in 1986.
Thanks for the info!
