Thank you so much for your very kind comment. Only someone with Foster's sensitivity and poetic genius could have composed such a song while living in unfavorable conditions - in New York, during the Civil War - and far from home and loved ones. There is also a video version of "Beautiful Dreamer" posted on this channel, which I hope you might like. Thank you, again, for writing.
i heard this tune played by a piano on the western TV program "Cheyenne" along with the tune" Whispering Hope"...and just want to find out who are these forgotten music writers and singers...Tune and songs will always remind us of the past. We can only surmise what life would have been 200 years ago...
I was feeling a bit down today, just kind of blah and this song popped into my head. I feel relaxed and at peace when I hear it, thank you very much for this!
Thank you so much for your kind comments. Stephen Foster was living in New York and was not in happy or peaceful surroundings when he composed this beautiful serenade, but he left us a true American classic when "Beautiful Dreamer" was published posthumously in 1864. There is also a "live" video version of the song on this "channel." Thank you so much for commenting.
@Ptapit733 Who knows if those adverse conditions you mentioned gave impetus to Mr. Foster to write these beautiful songs? Perhaps the uglier the battleground became, the more poignant the melodies that Stephen wove together? A matter of concern is when the utter brutality of war gives birth to such angelic and melodic masterpieces. I still don't understand it. Its entirely possible that I never will.
Ah this is one of my all time favorite songs EVER...I constantly sing it like on a daily basis or hum it....and this version is just what I was looking for!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate your taking the time to post such a generous comment. I used to do Stephen Foster programs in the 1970s and 1980s, and often wish I might re-live one of those days and do just one more. I also conducted a course at a small college, "The World of Stephen Foster," and was told by the people at Foster Hall that it was probably the only course devoted exclusively to a study of Foster. What wonderful music he gave us! Again, thank you.
beautiful dreamer brings back many wonderful happy memories of someone I knew. He turn 75 on 15/1/2011 and I have not seen him since. There was one occasion he played beauful dreamer with his organ and I would play this song w at one of the RSLs in malvern, those were the happy days... gone are the care of life's busy throng, I would not know where to find him or communicate with him now,, just pray somewhere in time we find each other again..
amazing!!! This is the song im practicing in my voice lessons...... im the only one singing it cuz no one else likes it and im like "ARE YOU NUTS! ITS SO PRETTY!!!!" :) So its my song now;)

Sheer beauty. Heart aching, haunting beauty. Stephen Foster deserved so much more.

My class sang this as part of our graduation ceremony from the 7th grade. About 1960.
