@JJW001 The craziness of the way it was put together was BECAUSE they were aiming for perfection. If they hadn't been so driven, you wouldn't have seen as good a result - and the making would have been a much more stress-free process, rather than a story in itself.
Aliens turned out to be a fantastic film, but imagine how much it must suck to work really hard on something that turns out to be rubbish. Like Avatar.
@METRO2033Artjom everyone went to see avatar, and no one liked it. terrible story. like vietnam and the decimation of the native americans was forgotten in the american psyche. i hated how the guy could come in and in a week be better than all the natives at everything. it was far too long. the designs looked silly. it was a mess.
@METRO2033Artjom aliens had a strong story, strong characters, and great actors in the lead roles. even sigourney couldnt save avatar and that wooden post in the main role ought to be ashamed of himself.
Except for the fact that he kind of ripped off most his stories from other people. Piranha _2_, Terminator from Harlan Ellison's Outer Limits episodes, Aliens from Obannon's Alien, Avatar is essentially Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves in Space, and well...Titanic's unoriginality I don't think I need to get into . I'll give him some cred for Abyss....but that's it.
@Eldeecue You could say that about the majority of films made. When I refer to his genius as a director I am referring more to how he shoots and films the movie, his inventiveness and technique. As far as Cameron goes as a writer, I agree with you, he is not original, but he is a master at stealing other peoples ideas and putting them to screen (albeit in an unethical and unfortunate way).
I have to James Cameron has to be credited for Aliens being a theatrical masterpeice... watching this document... you hear so much about friction between crew and Cameron... I believe this is due to his unique vision, this man knew what he wanted to SEE and HEAR... some of the actors may not have liked him... some of crews may have hated him... but you must give the man due credit... he knows how to tell a story (a rare gift these days).
I'll never forget that "blip...blip...blip..." of the motion trackers. That was scary enough. But then when it picked up something and you heard the high-pitched squeals it made, that just increased the terror ten fold. Sound can make all the difference in the world.
What a prima donna. Whine whine whine - oh yeah, I managed to do the job, but I felt the need to carry on about how impossible it was blah blah blah. If I was Cameron I'd never have used him again.
why oh why the track just before the atmosphere processor explodes reminds me so much of John William's end of Battle of Yavin track (likewise, just before the Death Star explodes)
I'll tell you, the sounds of the motion tracker, and the lack of music was perfect. The music from the alien nest affected me greatly. In fact, the alien nest instrumental as it progresses, or goes "downhill" as the Marines experienced it, is a soundtrack for life. It's as if life as you know it is going horribly wrong, and you know it. But you are unable to stop the events occurring. In incredibly horrific events that have unfolded themselves in my life, this bit "in the nest" takes hold.
@Ralastar man,i hear ya.james horner's music made this film what it was.and, apparently gale ann hurd treated him badly, just because he would not bend(because compositions cant just be chopped and changed)to her wishes...see either the 17th or eighteenth part in this series to hear the man himself.
by the sounds of the way this movie was put together it's a miracle it was as amazingly good as it was.

@RandyLahey911 well a lot of people disagree, the money they made disagreed as well. It comes down to personal taste.

@RandyLahey911 I have to agree for the part of sigourney in the movie. It was unnecessary and kind of out of place.

If Cameron is the genius auteur they claim he is in this documentary then explain the horrendous mess, in my mind anyway, that is Titanic?
simozonelayer 3 months ago
@simozonelayer Being a genius does not guarantee consistent or perfect output. This goes for writers, painters, directors etc.

@SpringfieldGarand Indeed. Turning off the sound of a thriller or horror, and suddenly it's not scary at all.
