This is a signal lesson of what NOT to do during an earthquake.
-Do not panic. Easy to say, since it's a reflex; but in larger crowds, panic is deadly.
-Do NOT rush outside! In this case, had the quake been worse, these guys could have encountered falling building material and severed power lines.
-No matter how great the urge is to flee, you are safer staying put during a quake. Get under a desk or counter if possible. Better to take a bicycle on the head than 300 lbs. of collapsing brick.
In a shop with lots of things hanging up, that was a smart move, but in a bigger earthquake, more people get hurt trying to escape buildings they're in than they do staying inside.
