Although these posts are pretty old, both you guys are stupid. 260 is the propshaft horsepower. Much of the hp is lost through the gear reduction. The 260 actually had much more hp at the crank than the advertised 260 on the drive. Mercury/Mercruiser no longer indicates their sterndrives this way.
268 for that year was great. The new v8s of today only do about 320 from the factory.Considering that car versions of that had about 150. Learn before you speak
