As a self employed person who can no longer afford health insurance..... sucks when a child gets really sick and there isnt a dam thing I can do about it.... wait til it gets worse? yes, this system is fine.... I now have stockpiled 35k in medical bills I pay back at the rate I used to pay when I have insurance..... they will get their money.... insurance based healthcare is actually worse then socialized medicine..... but you Conservatives know what is best .... LOL
@macpipkin , you owe me nothing... I deserve a chance to pay $400.oo a month for health insurance as I paid when I worked for a large company, in a pool, with 3,000 other employees.... then, during the gas price fiasco in 1997, the company went under, gave us the option of lease purchase, and as it was only chance to stay employed, I bought the truck that used to employ me..... lost health insurance.... but you know.... I can get it for 1800 a month now. Socialism for the fortunate 'insurance'
@macpipkin Every one pays into the system you and each other person. That's why those countries with healthcare coverage spend less on health care than the US. Something else your type doesn't get is that you are already paying for the care of those w/o insurance. Everytime they use the ER as the source of their primary care and the bills go unpaid the cost is pased on to those of us w/ insurance.
@BasilFawlty4444 Check the survival rates and then tell which system is better.
You live in a parliamentary monarchy. Your government has no restrictions on which aspects of your life it invades. We live in a constitutional republic. There are restrictions on our government. From the days of lords of vast lands, the people in the UK have crawled to higher ranks to meet their needs. That is NOT America. We are great because of freedom. We loose freedom and we stop being who we are. Then what?
The American concept of freedom is entirely English in it's conception. The system of English Law (that 49/50 US states use) protect people's freedoms. The concept of individual freedom, in this sense, stems from England in the mid-1200s.
The US Constitution and Declaration of Independence is based almost entirely on the work of English philosopher John Locke.
So don't get on your high horse about your freedom. We invented it.
@BasilFawlty4444 Do you honestly think you are educating me? Locke? Read him. Have you? You forgot Montesquieu, Machiavell, Paine, Hobbes, Harrington & Mill. Read them?
What is the use in "inventing" something you never practice?
"mainly because America does it differently to everyone else."
Yeah, makes your initial comparison quite silly...
"...the US measures rates of diagnosis differently..."
Yeah, we start counting the moment someone is diagnosed. Again, pretty silly to compare.
We are discussing how WE will move forward as a nation based on OUR constitution. What, exactly, is your place here? You like having no liberty? Fine. Fact is we passed a radical and unconstitutional law ripping liberty from everyone when only 8% of our citizens were falling through the cracks. Post all the BS from biased pro-egalitarian groups all you want. It does not pertain to to us because we are a majority people of liberty or death. Liberty is to be preserved before comfort.
@macpipkin We may have an uncodified constitution (if you don't count the Magna Carta or the HRA), but clearly we have liberty. And don't start on taxation - I've seen the tax bands; in some cases, lower earners in the UK will pay less!
Secondly, from what I hear, "Obamacare" has been found constitutional...
Thirdly, that 8% is more like 16%.
Fourthly, allow me to clarify; American DIAGNOSES figures are unreliable. I even posted the article there from Cancer Research. It's on Google.
@BasilFawlty4444 You have as much liberty as your government allows you to have. I'll take a written constitution any day.
"from what I hear, "Obamacare" has been found constitutional"
Why do you pretend to be an expert on what goes on over here? The lower courts are split so far. Our Supreme Court will rule on a provision sometime around June.
"Thirdly, that 8% is more like 16%"
If a person loses coverage for a day, they count for the year. The consistent # is 8%.
@macpipkin Not to degrade your Constitution in any way (it's a great document) but a piece of paper never protected anybody's liberty. NORTH KOREA has a written Constitution.
Look around you; there are happy, prosperous and free Westminster-system countries all over the world! The Westminster-style, like the American style, just has a tendency to produce liberty.
Parliamentary Sovereignty works just as well as Constitutional Sovereignty when it comes down to it.
@macpipkin Secondly, survival rates are not an accurate means by which to measure the results of a system, mainly because America does it differently to everyone else.
According to Cancer Research UK, the US measures rates of diagnosis differently, and it is not uncommon for results to not be recorded, and certain cancers to be overdiagnosed ('We need to be careful when comparing US and UK cancer care,' August 17, 2009, Henry Scowcroft).
@macpipkin What you need to do is take a long hard look at some proper statistics. You should take a look at the Commonwealth Fund 'Mirror Mirror' Report of 2010, which examined seven First World healthcare systems. Overall results:
@macpipkin I could stop here, having destroyed your argument so far, but I've got more.
According to a Your Surgery Abroad survey, 60% of Americans would consider travelling abroad for healthcare. A biased statistic? Perhaps.
But according to Deloitte, about 5% of Americans actually will.
The corresponding figure for the UK is 0.1%, the VAST majority of which were for non-NHS services including dentistry, cosmetic surgery and fertility treatment.
@Bllackguard666 Ill stay a Liberal and use logic. You can "pray" to the Reagan and the super Rich. BTW Jesus was poor for the poor he was super cool and he would have kicked Reagan's ass up and down DC.
@COATEStoCOATES Another mouthy, knowsall 22 year old. /sigh...You weren't even a itch in your daddy's pants when I was watching Reagan on the news, and supported his ideas. Reagen may have cut taxes but for the most part, what he did is nothing you will ever grasp, young one. Unless you lived the times, were there (you weren't), and knew what was happening to this nation as a whole, you have no ground to stand on.
@Bllackguard666 Reagan shutdown mental hospitals across the country which has now created a problem on our over crowded jails with tons of mental patients that shouldn't be there.Expanded the nuclear arms race. Was'nt the worst president but he set up the economy for this we would'nt be in this if Reagan had fought the rich and he wanted to tighten the borders but his corporate over lords told him not to and he listen.
@COATEStoCOATES Even before that (and that is true, he did shut down some asylums) many mental hospitals (some of them I have explored/UE) were shut down due to over crowding, and lack of funds. But, it's a lot of both. Also, back then (1910-1965) the treatment of patients was deplorable. That was another factor that the govt looked into. It was a mess, and affected this shit storm we have now. Either way, it all sucks.
Personally I'm glad the Obama administration has put an end to some of the abusive practices of the insurance industry. In no other country in the world is there the possibility of becoming bankrupt because of your health issues. Contrary to popular belief, it also does not curb "innovation" because the private sector will always be able to make a profit from advancements in technology, now fortunately they just can't make a profit from capitalizing on the inelasticity of health
The only thing i'd like to know though, which seems to be the weak part of his debate, is who is he talking about when saying " a little intelectual elite"?
@sqccccccccc: That would refer to someone like President Obama who has not done one real thing in his life. Someone who has spent their life being graded on a curve and being granted tenure, for being a good conformist, all the while telling the rest of us, who do real things in life, how we must run our businesses, conduct our affairs and even how we must relate to one another.
Someone like Robert Reich who has never run a business, but tells everyone else how to run theirs.
@sqccccccccc Who? Pres. Obama? There is nothing "élite" about his background. He is the son of a flighty mother and father (not his doing, of course) who was raised by his grandparents and mentored by a socialist in Hawaii.
He has a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law (first law degree one can receive) but his grades are unknown because he won't release his transcripts. We know Pres. Bush received mostly Cs on his way to a BA (Yale) & MBA (Harvard Business) because he released his transcripts.
@macpipkin The evidence that Obama is in fact part of an intellectual "élite" is astounding... he was promoted by an intellectual "élite" because he was the idealised version of a multiethnic america and the values mostly shared by the wealthy or learned middle and upper class people: did he not "succed" like most americain presidents through media coverage and publicity? Hence being bought like any good on the political market?
@sqccccccccc You hit the nail square on the head. President Obama & others are held up as "élite" members of society qualified to tell us how we must live our lives. When you actually examine the person you find just another person. Hence the term "LITTLE intellectual élite."
What President Reagan was warning against was ceding the freedom of the individual to the supposed masters of intellect. Obama is NOT qualified to run our lives, yet he will if we are dumb enough to let him.
@sqccccccccc President Regan never tried to fill those shoes. He tried to allow the individual to control their lives and flourish as much as their abilities would allow. On the other side we have people who see this as being somehow unfair. These largely self-appointed élitests try to micro-manage every aspect of life in order to impose their ideal of fairness on free people. When they are done very few are allowed to prosper, but the misery is equally spread. That is what seems fair to them...
@macpipkin There is something i don not understand though, if Regan wanted so bad a free real democracy, shouldn't he have included in his mandate some reform of the US voting system? I mean some sort of direct suffrage like in France, and not through a bunch of "big electors"? I mean, what about a simple voting system like in France?
Also there is a book about élites by Maurice Bernard you might like, it's called; "the french meritocracy", ed L'Harmattan, 2010.
@macpipkin The book disscuses whether the french are ruled by an élite based on merit.
What lines we may draw from this book is that countries like France, those based on the americain dream of independence or at least the dreams of a "Lumières" rising bourgeois class, are in fact a "meritocracy". Those who have the merit to be in such and such a place. He even talked about today's art and TV élites. The problem is of course criteria.
@sqccccccccc What sort of product is better than the other when they value exactly the same, criterias such as ethnic group, sex, and even the level of education, which can be very unfair for a myriad of reasons, these are the problems that a meritocracy or at least the people living in it, can face according to Maurice Bernard.
i dont see how this is criticizing Obama, how can giving all US citizens free health care be taking away freedom. It would be in the peoples interest and some central planing is very very good.
1 I assume the public health insurer would be able to negotiate lower prices because of its huge customer base as well as forcing private health insurers to lower prices or some other incentives to compete with the public option.
2 As private insures can say no now i think that's hardly a decrease in protection, but presumably as a public insurer would be less focused on profit margins i would hope they would say no less often.
1) You would think so, but it doesn't work that way. Massachusetts found that out the hard way. Increasing demand without increasing supply has the opposite effect. When you add millions of people to the market prices go up, not down.
2) Private insurers are regulated by governments and bound by contracts. When they unjustly say no, there is recourse. When the gov't runs the service and makes the laws, what then?
Thank you for your answers. They aren't bad, I just don't agree.
no they are mandating it for the excuse of no one being able to freeload off of tax money for people who are uninsured who get coverred anyway at our expense. but its still illegal, to force people that is.
then unless its life threatning (i.e heart attack, hit by a car, etc etc, then refuse service.) it sounds heartless i know, i hate it but if we have to go with htat kind of logic then so be it. and anyway healthcare would be cheaper if people in this country started taking care of themselves and also make the insurance companies run more efficiently. forcing citizens to partake is illegal and please dont use the drivers license excuse, a car is a weapon, one needs a license.
@macpipkin i resort to this because everything of substance is lost on the inbred swine that are on the right but ok i'll bite. Reagan raised taxes on 11 occasions after initially lowering them. Obama...lowered everyone's taxes again and again and again...not that you idiots noticed. Reagan gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants while obama maintains the bush ideology on restricting access. Reagan spoke on the benefits on medicare and social security while obama is aiming to cut it....
@CorrerPorVida Reagan gave arms to Islamic terrorist and "cut and ran" on three different occasions while Obama maintains the two illegal wars that are the actual cause of America's debt. Your pathetic sir, you are being played by people who would kill you and your family if it would gain them less than a buck.
@CorrerPorVida Reagan gave nothing. We sold surplus arms to Iranian moderates and got all of our hostages back home. The whole "no deals" mystique is a front face while diplomats do everything they can on the back channels. Cut & run? What was there to fight for in those instances? Do you want war or do you not want war. I'd rather do without. Illegal wars?!? So, Afghanistan is an illegal war? Neither war is illegal. Congress CAN declare war. They don't HAVE to.
No, entitlement spending continues to dwarf everything else in the budget. And again, if Hussein were still in power being a constant thorn in our side you guys on the left would be blaming Bush for that. Better to be done with him.
All the while you are being played by people who can only see the negative and would like to see this country undone if only to tear down people they believe to have come to possess "too much" wealth.
@CorrerPorVida Each of those tax increases was supposed to be met by Dem spending cuts which never happened. Obama has only held the line on current tax rates, lowered the taxes withheld and instituted the MWP program. Amnesty was supposed to go hand in hand with stricter border and work place enforcement which again never happened. Reagan and congress agreed on the special commission recommendations on SS that did cut benefits. No need to cut MC yet. Restructuring should work.
will not get in a pissing contest with a skunk-obviously in your case there was a trickle down----it was the best part of you that trickled down your mothers legs
no=i dont need to call someone names-when one does that-all that they do is show just how weak minded they really are.i do not need to look up an explanation of weapons of mass destruction-i know what they are-unlike you-i REMEMBER JUST WHAT G. W TOLD OUR COUNTRY AND OUR CONGRESS BEFORE HE LED US INTO AN UNJUSTIFIED WAR.by the way-i have been in another of our countries past military adventures-and i have worked sinced age 15 and recently retired------your mentality shows thru in your statements
@pennm51 Yeah, if President Bush left office with Hussein still in power and a thorn in our side, you panty wearin' leftists would be bitching about that.
I started working at 12 and I realized back then nobody owes me anything. Something you never learned.
You are a sorry little troll who goes to every Reagan video asking the same stupid question. I am treating you with more respect than you deserve.
Waa, life's not fair! I'll vote for democrats and they'll make it all better! Pathetic...
@pennm51 If you can in fact read, go here: en d wikipedia d org s wiki s Iraq_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction
Its not as cut & dry as you think...
So, bottom-feeding loser, when does that Great Society kick in? Can you at least thank me, and other hard working tax-payers, for paying the taxes that allow a bottom-feeding loser like you to eat and have a place to live?
so-it has been 30 years since the great communicator changed america and enabled us to stand tall-pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps----now the big question is-just when will this trickle down take place ?
It did and has since President Reagan and congress changed the direction of this country from being on the cusp of turning into a third rate socialist democracy into a thriving small business mecca. Now, it needs to be saved again.
Sadly, because you sit around and wait for someone else to run your life and make it better, you will never really enjoy the fruits of this great experiment in individual ordered liberty...
this video is titled reagan vs obama on healthcare---funny thing is the words health care or anything about health care are nowhere to be found anywhere in the video--------typical right wing fox news propoganda telling you what you should be thinking as if you are not capable to think on your own
@pennm51: You can't be this stupid. The point is government intrusion into the everyday lives of individuals. When we have to go to any government to have our needs met, are we still free?
Whether it is an insurance company following a policy you signed, or a standards and practices board, people will hear the word "no." When an insurance company says no there are remedies and options. The question is, where do you go and what can you do when the government says no?
This video is stupid, and anybody who believes it's ridiculous message needs to kill themselves right now. The world doesn't need this type of stupid backwards thinking.
Nice speech with a cute little made up story. To anyone with half a brain this incident never happened. Why the hell would any friend of his ever have contact with some random cuban refugee? And besides..there are plenty of countries that offer more immigration opportunities than we do. As far as freedom goes I am not quite sure what he means by that word as it is not defined. Script read by an actor...that is what that is.
To embrace socialism is to cede that America is not unique. To cede that America is so unfare and so unjustthat it can no longer be entrusted to the people. If America isany of that, it is due to the ever growing government. Government destroys everything it touches. We are the only nation that loans rights to the government. Everywhere else, the government loans rights to the people. And it can take them away at any time. America must not sink into the abyss
Wow should you really rename this video. This is not Regan vs. Obama this is Regan speaking about Healthcare with a picture of Obama thrown in at the end. If you are going to make a video about two presidents opinions on healthcare you should put both of them up there.
They are called Dominionists. They are a political movement pretending to be a religious movement. They are very secretive and deeply rooted in society. They are neo-fascists. Their real goal is to wage war on the ghettos after they have manipulated the legal system to legitimize a police state. They are classist and pretend to be anti-socialist at every juncture. They are rich so they are capitalists and they deserve public funds. We are poor so we are communists if we get the same. BS.
Reagan was a great president, but he brought us into trillions of dollars in debt thanks to the commies. He acknowledged that though. He was unlike today's current president who can take a back seat.
People have forgotten what we have fought so many wars over. If our leaders could think back to older times, we could make changes in a more positive direction.
Africans are still doing the same thing to their own people in Africa!! However, nobody appreciate that 600,000 American died in the civil war to free them!
Most were not. You aren't even an American. How are you going to tell us about American history? How can you tell us of something you will never know? How can you know or ever hope to understand the nature of the liberty we in America are about to loose?
@noformstyle wasn't slavery once practiced in america? liberty in america is a myth. You have to be quite ignorant to belive that free healthcare for all is a way of controlling people.
So now someone who has to crawl to the government for so many things says liberty in America is a myth. You do not know liberty and you will never know liberty. You are a subject, not a citizen.
There was slavery in England as well. It was abolished in 1833. Slavery was abolished in America in 1868. Do the math. Who practiced it longer? Hint: America was not even 100 years old when slavery was abolished. How long had England been a country?
I don't think Ronald Reagan was talking to today's struggling middle class people

That is what seems fair to them...
macpipkin 9 months ago
@macpipkin There is something i don not understand though, if Regan wanted so bad a free real democracy, shouldn't he have included in his mandate some reform of the US voting system? I mean some sort of direct suffrage like in France, and not through a bunch of "big electors"? I mean, what about a simple voting system like in France?
Also there is a book about élites by Maurice Bernard you might like, it's called; "the french meritocracy", ed L'Harmattan, 2010.
sqccccccccc 9 months ago
@macpipkin The book disscuses whether the french are ruled by an élite based on merit.
What lines we may draw from this book is that countries like France, those based on the americain dream of independence or at least the dreams of a "Lumières" rising bourgeois class, are in fact a "meritocracy". Those who have the merit to be in such and such a place. He even talked about today's art and TV élites. The problem is of course criteria.
sqccccccccc 9 months ago
@sqccccccccc What sort of product is better than the other when they value exactly the same, criterias such as ethnic group, sex, and even the level of education, which can be very unfair for a myriad of reasons, these are the problems that a meritocracy or at least the people living in it, can face according to Maurice Bernard.
sqccccccccc 9 months ago
@macpipkin But going back to the main point, the problem is to know wether or not the US are a meritocracy or not.
To my mind Obama and Regan may be élites of one of the most unfair meritocratic systems of this planet.
sqccccccccc 9 months ago
i dont see how this is criticizing Obama, how can giving all US citizens free health care be taking away freedom. It would be in the peoples interest and some central planing is very very good.
hughheggen 10 months ago
@hughheggen He isn't "giving" anyone anything. Nothing is free. The plan is, buy health coverage that fits a narrow criteria or pay a fine...
Please answer these two simple questions:
1) How do costs get lowered when the price isn't?
2) When the "central planning" controls health decisions, where do you go when they say no?
macpipkin 10 months ago
@macpipkin ill try.
1 I assume the public health insurer would be able to negotiate lower prices because of its huge customer base as well as forcing private health insurers to lower prices or some other incentives to compete with the public option.
2 As private insures can say no now i think that's hardly a decrease in protection, but presumably as a public insurer would be less focused on profit margins i would hope they would say no less often.
hughheggen 9 months ago
hughheggen:
1) You would think so, but it doesn't work that way. Massachusetts found that out the hard way. Increasing demand without increasing supply has the opposite effect. When you add millions of people to the market prices go up, not down.
2) Private insurers are regulated by governments and bound by contracts. When they unjustly say no, there is recourse. When the gov't runs the service and makes the laws, what then?
Thank you for your answers. They aren't bad, I just don't agree.
macpipkin 9 months ago
@hughheggen
no they are mandating it for the excuse of no one being able to freeload off of tax money for people who are uninsured who get coverred anyway at our expense. but its still illegal, to force people that is.
TeslaDRay 9 months ago
@TeslaDRay covering the people against this freeloading doesn't seem like such a bad idea
hughheggen 9 months ago
@hughheggen
then unless its life threatning (i.e heart attack, hit by a car, etc etc, then refuse service.) it sounds heartless i know, i hate it but if we have to go with htat kind of logic then so be it. and anyway healthcare would be cheaper if people in this country started taking care of themselves and also make the insurance companies run more efficiently. forcing citizens to partake is illegal and please dont use the drivers license excuse, a car is a weapon, one needs a license.

@CorrerPorVida and time reveals another leftist troll with nothing of substance to offer...
macpipkin 1 year ago
@macpipkin i resort to this because everything of substance is lost on the inbred swine that are on the right but ok i'll bite. Reagan raised taxes on 11 occasions after initially lowering them. Obama...lowered everyone's taxes again and again and again...not that you idiots noticed. Reagan gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants while obama maintains the bush ideology on restricting access. Reagan spoke on the benefits on medicare and social security while obama is aiming to cut it....
CorrerPorVida 1 year ago
@CorrerPorVida Reagan gave arms to Islamic terrorist and "cut and ran" on three different occasions while Obama maintains the two illegal wars that are the actual cause of America's debt. Your pathetic sir, you are being played by people who would kill you and your family if it would gain them less than a buck.
CorrerPorVida 1 year ago

You call that substance?
macpipkin 1 year ago
@CorrerPorVida Each of those tax increases was supposed to be met by Dem spending cuts which never happened. Obama has only held the line on current tax rates, lowered the taxes withheld and instituted the MWP program. Amnesty was supposed to go hand in hand with stricter border and work place enforcement which again never happened. Reagan and congress agreed on the special commission recommendations on SS that did cut benefits. No need to cut MC yet. Restructuring should work.

no=i dont need to call someone names-when one does that-all that they do is show just how weak minded they really are.i do not need to look up an explanation of weapons of mass destruction-i know what they are-unlike you-i REMEMBER JUST WHAT G.

Pathetic...

Its not as cut & dry as you think...
So, bottom-feeding loser, when does that Great Society kick in? Can you at least thank me, and other hard working tax-payers, for paying the taxes that allow a bottom-feeding loser like you to eat and have a place to live?
Just dumb enough to be a democrat... ;-)

obviously you have not had the "pleasures"of insurance companies ---------just when is it that the "trickle down begins" ?
pennm51 1 year ago
@pennm51 Oh, but I have...
Funny, you never answered the question. Where do you go, what do you do when the government says no?
macpipkin 1 year ago
yes the trickle down is getting more and more intense every year since reagan-lol!
pennm51 1 year ago
so-it has been 30 years since the great communicator changed america and enabled us to stand tall-pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps----now the big question is-just when will this trickle down take place ?
pennm51 1 year ago
@pennm51:

@macpipkin -yes-you can now clearly see the fruits of the direction our country was taken to

this video is titled reagan vs obama on healthcare---funny thing is the words health care or anything about health care are nowhere to be found anywhere in the video--------typical right wing fox news propoganda telling you what you should be thinking as if you are not capable to think on your own
pennm51 1 year ago
@pennm51: You can't be this stupid. The point is government intrusion into the everyday lives of individuals. When we have to go to any government to have our needs met, are we still free?
Whether it is an insurance company following a policy you signed, or a standards and practices board, people will hear the word "no." When an insurance company says no there are remedies and options. The question is, where do you go and what can you do when the government says no?

America must not sink into the abyss
p2breaker 1 year ago

Most were not. You aren't even an American. How are you going to tell us about American history? How can you tell us of something you will never know? How can you know or ever hope to understand the nature of the liberty we in America are about to loose?
Wasn't slavery once practiced in Belize?
macpipkin 2 years ago
that's true. but george washington had opposed it!
santanaramostarango 2 years ago
@noformstyle wasn't slavery once practiced in america? liberty in america is a myth. You have to be quite ignorant to belive that free healthcare for all is a way of controlling people.
Anonymous19911225 1 year ago
@Anonymous19911225
Speaking of ignorant...
macpipkin 1 year ago
@Anonymous19911225 It relies on other people to provide healthcare for others AKA everyone is enslaved to everyone.
You have to be quite ignorant to believe that that's freedom.
