@latmask00 thank you. is memory sticks expensive or prices gone down for use with this device. I guess I can deduce from your kind information of 96k to the other recording modes. Is there a math formula for recordings with this device somewhere... I guess the manual would have that information.. 8 gig memory would give me about 4 hours, 16 bit would be 7 hours? thanks..
@ceomeye Memory Sticks have come down in price, this device uses the M2 type MemoryStick, the 16GB model (largest) costs about 50 USD (SanDisk brand) according to Amazon.
MicroSD is less expensive, a 16GB model costs about 30 USD on Amazon.
From what I can find the formula for 96kHz/24bit is 33MB per minute.
However the manual lists all the different recording modes, so you dont have to calculate them by yourself. 96kHz at 16-bits on 8GB will give you 5 hours and 45 minutes, 3h50min for 24-bit.
@ceomeye To find the owners manual just google "PCM-M10 manual", the first search which points to ws-sel-sony-com (- is . so Youtube wont censor) which is a PDF file is the genuine manual. :)
I have a PCM-M10, i can strongly recommend it. Only negative about it is the loudspeaker, sound is pretty thin. But it works good for playing back speech and i use headphones anyway. Nice video, thanks
I bought one at Sam Ash last week. The list price was $299. When I told them it was available on line for $225 they sold it to me for $221. So far so good....Having problems understanding play mode, but the sound quality is incredible.
@ih8tbush Well I obviously have it and I like it a lot. The built in microphones are absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Easy to use, no hassle to transfer files (drag and drop), very nice audio quality when playing back on the device. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the battery compartment door, its made of thin plastic and will make a noise if you squeeze it. Otherwise the handling noise is very low. I found a forum where they are discussing the unit
@ih8tbush No problem. :) It should be fine on the table as long as there are no vibrations that it might pick up.. Put it on something soft that can absorb the vibrations if this happens. Though it has a standard 1/4" 20 tpi BSW mount underneath so a regular camera tripod will work if you happen to have one.
Be aware of the acoustics of the room, you might have to experiment a little with where you place the recorder to get the sound you want.
Hey man , nice unit you have here. I am in a need of one of these. but i really like these old school mini disc recorders, i see you also have the MZ-RH1 . How would you compare these 2. Ofcourse you cant beat the pure coolness of minidisc players but how is the quality difference.
Great stuff. I'm geissler on there. Nothing special uploaded, just screwing around with the MZ-R50, a machine quite a bit older than yours... handed down from my dad, it clocked in 11 years of faithful service before dying on me recently. Mostly used it as a musical sketchpad so that's what I'm looking for with the M10... Usability is key, as is building a relationship with the device. I'm just afraid that I'll end up hating it if the startup time lets me down in a tight situation.
I'd love to hear some of your field recordings, too. Why don't you upload them to freesound and share the link on here? IMO everyone with a portable audio recorder should be on freesound!
Good stuff, I didn't know it had a sleep mode. I'm guessing energy consumption is negligible when it's sleeping... have you noticed any battery drain while having it in sleep mode for several days? I'd love to do some tests on this.
I held the olympus LS-11 in my hand today and was very unimpressed.
I haven't noted much energy loss when in sleep mode, but I have only had it in that mode for maybe 5-6 hours at most. I use rechargable batteries btw, 2700 mAh.
But simple math says 40 hours for recording MP3 should draw more energy than sleep mode. ;)
I am on freesound, my username is fastson there. Whats your username?
I haven't uploaded anything from the M10 though, I only have MZ-RH1 recordings there.
The thing that impressed me the most about this thing is how quiet the built in mics are. I have a Audio Technica 822 external mic and the high sensitivity versions of The Sound Professionals SP-TFB-2 binaural microphones, and let me tell you neither of these come close to the built in mics in terms of noise. And the response to high and low freq have also impressed me.
Too bad the built in mics dont provide the same soundscape/sense of room as the other two mics.
Since the battery life is somewhere around 40 hours while recording you can basically turn it on in the morning and off when you get home, no need to turn it off after recording something if you know you will record something else that day. I usually put the switch on HOLD and let it sit there.
It goes into sleep mode when not in use, but it wakes up in the instant you press a button.
Plus I believe it boots faster without a microSD card in there as it checks the card on each cold start.
@darkknight91 Handling noise is very impressive. I was standing outside in freezing weather recording some ambient noise, my hand was shaking while holding the device and it didnt pick up any of that "shaking". You can hear if some of the buttons are pressed, like the "T-Mark". The Recorder volume jog can be operated without being heard, if you are careful.
Compared to my ATA822 external mic its a night and day difference in terms of handling noise. AT822 picks up the slightest bit of handnoise
I was really hoping to hear something from this recorder, but I enjoyed your tour anyway. Makes the PCM-M10 seem much easier to use than you'd think from looking at the manual!
can some one tell me the name of the song

I'm really happy with mine. So much of it is intuitive. Great on board microphones AND easiest transfer to MAC imaginable!

how long can you record on 96k in hours?
ceomeye 1 year ago
@ceomeye 96kHz/24-bit 1 hour 50 minutes on 4GB (internal), on 16GB (external - MemoryStick or microSD) 7 hours 45 minutes.
96kHz/16-bit 2 hours 45 minutes on 4GB (internal - MemoryStick or microSD), on 16GB (external) 11 hours 35 minutes.

@ih8tbush Here is the forum I found.
Blah, you cant link in the comments section. Just google: tapersection PCM-M10

@latmask00
Really appreciate your remarks and the link. One last question,
does it require a tripod or some alternate (additional accessory)
mount to work properly or can I just set it on a table next to me and
record while I play?
