Amazing playing, as he always performed so magnificently, but too bad the transfer is 1/2 tone too high, so the vibrato and tempi are sped up! (It sounds to be in B Flat instead of A in the beginning)
@saintmichael104 Supposedly Heifetz asked Waxman to write him a new Carmen Fantasy, one that was really difficult, because he (Heifetz) felt the Sarasate wasn't challenging enough for him. I don't know if that's true, but it's a good story. I believe the piece is also dedicated to him.
People who just believe marketing more than their ears.,..Lord... I love Heifetz playing. LOVE IT. But to suspend rational thought and idolize any single player, even Jascha, as the best there ever was and will be, belies your simplicity and serfdom, which should have it's place in religious idolatry and not music, which knows no perfection, only the stride towards it.
@rapter9800 son (later violinist) on the right and daughter (later pianist) on the left. Kogan's wife was also a top violinist and they performed duets together professionally
@CKDindustry listen v carefully and you'll learn the error of your idea. hear the emotion, the passion the great great skill and you will wonder how can any man play like the great mr kogan
This recording although not egregiously false, is not true. The original was not recorded this fast, thus the key would not have been as sharp. It is unfair to judge this recording, which should be running at the correct speed and proper A major key. It is unfair to Mr Kogan. Other Kogan Carmen's seem to also be even more false. Would someone put them in the right key please (Amajor). TY
How long till I can play this song? I just performed lalo symphonie espagnole, and this is my fourth year of playing the violin. Pleasereply. Also, when can I play other famous concerti?
yes, the orchestra is always a little bit late and not quick in response, but you know this was the tradition of old schools, when solists wanna show their amazing virtuosity, they come in early and play suddenly faster, the orchestra has to be late, "pretend" to be....
I'm glad there were some moments during this performance when I could breathe. Clean, precise, full of emotion. The orchestra is good too. I am sorry I never saw him live on stage.
brilliant!!! I hate it when people comparing the playing of violin masters (Kogan, Heifetz, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlmann, Daivd Oistrakh) when they themselves are nowhere near their skills and talent. Different people have different interpretation of a piece. And that's the reason music is forever so beautiful.
its not neccesarily comparing; more like saying i prefer this one over the other. of course there are many superb violinists who offer excellent interpretations and to not to listen to one b'cos you may not like that soloist is to close your mind. lets enjoy the talent of these great masters.
Seems Kogan can handle much more difficult piece than the other virtuosos, not only he can play it with a flurry fashion but also inject in with a treamendous feeling, probably only Paganini himself could do it.
Well, this is absolutely the best Kogan rendition´s Carmen / Waxmann, is unbeatable, the precision and cleanliness is unique, unrepeatable, not to speak of the musicality and sound, magnificent..
Kogan was incredible and wonderful in this piece...unforgettable
this def beats heifetz versoin - even though i think heifetz was always near the top in most pieces, although sometimes he was too cold in his interpretation
There is no 'definitive interpretation'. It's silly to do, even though almost everyone does.
Heifetz was never cold in his interpretation. He was maybe cold in his delivery but that was because he concentrated on not distracting people from the music through his performance antics. Close your eyes and HEAR the emotion coming out of Heifetz. As a matter of fact, do that for Kogan here.
Fact: All these greats are in fact great in their own right. None are better: they are uniquely different.
essentially i agree w you. although of course kogan was never prone to performance antics.
i have said elsewhere that what one perceives to be pleasing may not be so for somone else. indeed who are we amateurs to comment on the work of such greats as kogan heifetz oistrakh milstein and many others
just enjoy their playing, but it still doesnt stop us preferring one over the other
It is a dangerous slope to say one of these violinists is bad, or worse than another contemporary. (Unless there is some moral/character flaw with one of them. Here I would cite Oistrakh and Stern - though I still enjoy former's playing).
I too used to be a big Kogan fan when i was a child, great player. But to compare him to Heifetz.... You guys are REALLY and I mean REALLY stretching it.
@kzm1 heifetz plays slow because he thinks the music is better when it is slow. In my opinion kogan always plays too fast and rough and not as detailed as heifetz'
@CKDindustry I think you're completely mistaken. Kogan may be playing faster here, but if you look at most recordings, Heifetz is the one playing extra fast, and Kogan is the one taking his time. I'm not saying Heifetz isn't good because I'm a huge fan of his, but I wanted to point out that in reality, it's the opposite of what you wrote. Listen to Vieuxtemps concerto 5 and tell me that I'm wrong.
Bottom line, they're both excellent, despite their different styles.
Thanks for posting. To everyone out there, please post as many of Kogan's music as you have. Let's enjoy listening to the music of this most talented violinist of the 20th century.
because Kogan was not able to find the score, he apparently remade it or something like that? it translates to he reawakened it....anyways, he or she said thats thats amazing... Heifetz was known to not have any rivals, and yet he thinks Kogan was his rival.... even though he was not looked upon as highly in Japan.
HOLY COW!!!!! Where on earth did you find this treasure??? I have a recording of this piece by Kogan made the year before he passed away. When was this recorded??? Thx for posting!!!
This was recorded in 1960 i think ? I don't know, the conductor is Evgeny Svetlanov and is the URSS national orchestra or something like that. The recording you had was with the URSS national orchestra again? conducted by his son Pavel Kogan.
How come are you guys comparing Kogan, Heifetz, Oistrakh with each other??? They are simply pupils of god!
Tr0jan1337 1 month ago
They had different tunings back then. 440 was not standard and still isn't completely today. If you think its sped up because its higher pitch...
