  • How come are you guys comparing Kogan, Heifetz, Oistrakh with each other??? They are simply pupils of god!

  • They had different tunings back then. 440 was not standard and still isn't completely today. If you think its sped up because its higher pitch...

  • Thank you for his rare recordings!

No any Mozart violin concertos a part the 3rd and 5th ?

    Regards

  • this is sped up, just as many recordings on youtube, i also never think that they sound better, just makes me want to hear the original

  • @jascha1978 how do you know that?

  • Wow! A better left hand than Heifetz! Amazing...

  • IT IS 1/2 STEP RAISED (A SOUNDS LIKE B FLAT)!!!!!!! Still amazing, though

  • All hail the great Kogan

  • THAT is the most difficult piece

  • Kogan eats through this about 50 seconds quicker than Vengerov.

    Kogan: you are the master.

  • Amazing playing, as he always performed so magnificently, but too bad the transfer is 1/2 tone too high, so the vibrato and tempi are sped up! (It sounds to be in B Flat instead of A in the beginning)

  • @bunkydunks

you might be right for many other of his studio recordings, but in this one it´s no really too high :)

  • Is this a good piece to progress to after Saint-Saen's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso?

  • @rapter9800 hahahah NO! this is incredibly difficult, work on something like the Ziguernewiesen or a short Sarasate peice.

  • @saintmichael104 Supposedly Heifetz asked Waxman to write him a new Carmen Fantasy, one that was really difficult, because he (Heifetz) felt the Sarasate wasn't challenging enough for him. I don't know if that's true, but it's a good story. I believe the piece is also dedicated to him.

  • People who just believe marketing more than their ears.,..Lord... I love Heifetz playing. LOVE IT. But to suspend rational thought and idolize any single player, even Jascha, as the best there ever was and will be, belies your simplicity and serfdom, which should have it's place in religious idolatry and not music, which knows no perfection, only the stride towards it.

  • I love how modest the applause is at the end.

  • I like the facial expression of the little kid on the right.

Is he Pavel, or is the other one Pavel?

  • Comment removed

  • @rapter9800 son (later violinist) on the right and daughter (later pianist) on the left. Kogan's wife was also a top violinist and they performed duets together professionally

  • @rapter9800 one on the right is Pavel.

  • I don't like this. All he cares is speed and speed.

  • @CKDindustry listen v carefully and you'll learn the error of your idea. hear the emotion, the passion the great great skill and you will wonder how can any man play like the great mr kogan

  • It is impossible to beat this. THIS IS IT

  • just think - this amazing playing is LIVE damn kogan youre so fine, youre so fine you blow my mind!

  • Of course he is much better than Heifetz.

  • Jeez, he isn't human. All bow down to the almighty Kogan!

  • @MrLindenson heh heh all "bow" down btw i agree

  • @LegionMCR wow haha. This comment really makes me wonder why orchdorks aren't made fun of as much as Band Nerds.

  • @violmaster94 maybe its because band nerds reed too much?

  • LOL this guys unreal

  • This recording although not egregiously false, is not true. The original was not recorded this fast, thus the key would not have been as sharp. It is unfair to judge this recording, which should be running at the correct speed and proper A major key. It is unfair to Mr Kogan. Other Kogan Carmen's seem to also be even more false. Would someone put them in the right key please (Amajor). TY

  • Mmm...I think you're right, I never noticed this one is also off. I've uploaded a version that hopefully fixes it.

  • How long till I can play this song? I just performed lalo symphonie espagnole, and this is my fourth year of playing the violin. Pleasereply. Also, when can I play other famous concerti?

  • you can probably already start playing concertos like bruch, mendelssohn, saint saens, wieniawski no. 2, barber.. :)

  • Um, yeah. I never wanna hear this "Heifetz is the best" stuff ever again.

  • has anyone recordings of Kogan when he was doing the Queen Elisabeth competition? I just love his playing

  • its on youtube

  • L.B.Kogan was king of techniaue. His sound not like Heifetz but his techniaue i thing more cleaner than Heifetz.

  • I do agree absoluty with you

  • who is conductor here? must kill him.

  • Svetlanov, and sorry , he's already dead! :P

  • The conductor is wearing sound proof ear muffs for this performance ;)

  • @calloffthedogs

yes, the orchestra is always a little bit late and not quick in response, but you know this was the tradition of old schools, when solists wanna show their amazing virtuosity, they come in early and play suddenly faster, the orchestra has to be late, "pretend" to be....

  • Mr. Kogan play all technique like than how we drink tea or how we speak, (with out any problem)

  • wonderful comment. and true!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm glad there were some moments during this performance when I could breathe. Clean, precise, full of emotion. The orchestra is good too. I am sorry I never saw him live on stage.

  • i like his rendition. Heifetz and Vengerov's versions are also great :D

  • brilliant!!! I hate it when people comparing the playing of violin masters (Kogan, Heifetz, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlmann, Daivd Oistrakh) when they themselves are nowhere near their skills and talent. Different people have different interpretation of a piece. And that's the reason music is forever so beautiful.

  • its not neccesarily comparing; more like saying i prefer this one over the other. of course there are many superb violinists who offer excellent interpretations and to not to listen to one b'cos you may not like that soloist is to close your mind. lets enjoy the talent of these great masters.

  • Seems Kogan can handle much more difficult piece than the other virtuosos, not only he can play it with a flurry fashion but also inject in with a treamendous feeling, probably only Paganini himself could do it.

  • its absolutely amazing, never has a chance to listen to it. Thanks for posting:d

  • Well, this is absolutely the best Kogan rendition´s Carmen / Waxmann, is unbeatable, the precision and cleanliness is unique, unrepeatable, not to speak of the musicality and sound, magnificent..

Kogan was incredible and wonderful in this piece...unforgettable

  • thanks for posting master Kogan's family picture

  • pure equsitie listeing joy!!!!!!!!!!!

  • does anyone know if this is avail on CD

  • It is available. I have the CD. It's called Historic Russian Archives (10 CDs). You can find it for 19 euro in Germany

  • Thanks i'll look on amazon or something

  • this def beats heifetz versoin - even though i think heifetz was always near the top in most pieces, although sometimes he was too cold in his interpretation

  • There is no 'definitive interpretation'. It's silly to do, even though almost everyone does.

Heifetz was never cold in his interpretation. He was maybe cold in his delivery but that was because he concentrated on not distracting people from the music through his performance antics. Close your eyes and HEAR the emotion coming out of Heifetz. As a matter of fact, do that for Kogan here.

Fact: All these greats are in fact great in their own right. None are better: they are uniquely different.

  • essentially i agree w you. although of course kogan was never prone to performance antics.

i have said elsewhere that what one perceives to be pleasing may not be so for somone else. indeed who are we amateurs to comment on the work of such greats as kogan heifetz oistrakh milstein and many others

just enjoy their playing, but it still doesnt stop us preferring one over the other

  • We are in total agreement.

It is a dangerous slope to say one of these violinists is bad, or worse than another contemporary. (Unless there is some moral/character flaw with one of them. Here I would cite Oistrakh and Stern - though I still enjoy former's playing).

  • Kogan really make me forget about Heifetz !!! Amazing!!!

  • The ricochet at 0:39 is amazing.

  • absolutely blood amazing superb fantasitc -whole piece also

  • gave five stars before listening.. couldn't and didn't go wrong:)

  • i admit, since youtube i became kogan addict. he makes heifetz look human.

  • @kzm1 I totally agree with you .

  • @kzm1

    *cough*

I too used to be a big Kogan fan when i was a child, great player. But to compare him to Heifetz.... You guys are REALLY and I mean REALLY stretching it.

  • @kzm1 heifetz plays slow because he thinks the music is better when it is slow. In my opinion kogan always plays too fast and rough and not as detailed as heifetz'

  • @CKDindustry I think you're completely mistaken. Kogan may be playing faster here, but if you look at most recordings, Heifetz is the one playing extra fast, and Kogan is the one taking his time. I'm not saying Heifetz isn't good because I'm a huge fan of his, but I wanted to point out that in reality, it's the opposite of what you wrote. Listen to Vieuxtemps concerto 5 and tell me that I'm wrong.

Bottom line, they're both excellent, despite their different styles.

  • NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS

  • THE BEST

  • Kogan Forever

  • Thanks for posting. To everyone out there, please post as many of Kogan's music as you have. Let's enjoy listening to the music of this most talented violinist of the 20th century.

  • translating to english:

this was a piece composed to Heifetz.

because Kogan was not able to find the score, he apparently remade it or something like that? it translates to he reawakened it....anyways, he or she said thats thats amazing... Heifetz was known to not have any rivals, and yet he thinks Kogan was his rival.... even though he was not looked upon as highly in Japan.

now thats new info for me...

Oistrakh was kinda his rival too wasn't he?

    KOGAN IS THE BEST!!!

  • Clean and the best performance and interpretation of Carmen Waxman..!!!

Only played for Leonid Kogan ...another king of the violin...

  • phenomenal

  • Astonishing technique and expressive power almost beyond compare. Bravo!!!

  • no almost about it. It IS beyond compare!

  • OMG iplayed this in my orchestra but no soloist

  • Awesome recording and beautiful photo. Thank you for posting!

  • My God!!!.. this is unbelievable. This must be indeed be a very rare one. THANK YOU for posting! Please post more if you have!!

  • HOLY COW!!!!! Where on earth did you find this treasure??? I have a recording of this piece by Kogan made the year before he passed away. When was this recorded??? Thx for posting!!!

  • This was recorded in 1960 i think ? I don't know, the conductor is Evgeny Svetlanov and is the URSS national orchestra or something like that. The recording you had was with the URSS national orchestra again? conducted by his son Pavel Kogan.
