Oh well... Rory surely was that, and Slash surely is that too. Very tangible, very real, very anti-hollywood. And that is exactly what I can also hear in both their individual kind of playing.
When I hear such guys playing... it is like turning on my good old selfmade shortwave radio, listening to all that kind of sincere music in the middle of the night with no MTV attitudes at all.
I must be very old-fashioned, a relic form those times, that is! ;-)
well at the end of the day rory gallagher is a 1000 billion times more talented than slash and dont get me wrong slash is good but rory is killer good
2 great guitarists...not surprised thre were awkward moments..they are both stage dominating power players but from differnt genres..it can be too much. Slash plays what he knows..Rory can play anythin he wants..but Slash is the best at what he does..not simply guitar..but GOD for OTT rock bands full of F*** YOU attitude. Rory was a soul man..blues man..best at what he did. More humble music, designed to tweak the emotions.
You cant compare Palahniuk and Orwell..dont compare Slash n Rory.
I was never very impressed by slash, that now has changed, he's obviously got some great taste, i love the fact that he was into Rory G so young and got it from his old man just like myself.
I love Slash, he is a very melodic, amazing guitarist - guns and roses and rory are what i play for motivation when i am lifting weights - Rory is a God, from my humble perspective, Rory is Jimi in Irish. he is the only guy I can put in the same sentence as Hendrix and not relegate to second place!
ya know slash is a good guitar player in his own right, but there are plenty of terrific players,,,,rory is a legendary guitarist, it would be like chalk and cheese if you tried to compare . i guess rorys just awsome for allowing him to get up and have rattle with him . i guess a dream come true for slash . i think id rather sit back somewhere after the show with a couple of acoustics and a beer , and have a wee jam
Gotta take issue with 103121... Was at the Roxy show in front of the GREAT Rory and recall vividly a major rolling of eyes exchanged by Rory and Gerry McAvoy during Slash's interminable and fumbling pentatonic flailing. Total showboating and not in a good way. Doubtless, Rory felt honoured to some degree as G-n-R were huge at that point, but the playing... yikes... I kept hoping that he'd go away and let Rory do the bizzo.
Hmm, I think if anyone felt honoured it was Slash, and interestingly when asked about it in interview Rory said that Slash had ASKED (very politely) if he could come up and jam. However Rory did have some complimentary things to say about his playing eg "He looks as if he isn't paying attention but then he'll suddenly let out a riff that'd freeze your blood"! But I have heard before that the audience weren't too impressed by Slash's contribution.
@sturmgeschutz75L I think Slash was intimidated! I know if I was in his position I'd probably fumble my playing too, not that Slash is a total showboater but he usually doesn't constantly fumble around. With a man of his ego only a guitarist as bad ass as Rory could have intimidated him!
@sturmgeschutz75L - apparenty Slash was very nervous and starstruck which affected his playing. Think I'd be the same if I spontaneously played with Slash or Rory!
When I saw this on tv in 1995, I said to myself that Temple Bar 1992 show should be released on video/dvd. I actually had a tape of that then (audience recordings), and it is Rory's best performance with his last band IMHO. It was also his last Irish gig.
Heartfelt tribute. But it's ridiculous for Slash to say 'I knew pretty much all his licks when I first started playing guitar [aged 8]'. Even now, Slash couldn't play the blues for his life but Rory pretty much exhausted the entire field of blues guitar playing from country-blues to blues-rock from 1969-76. Pity he didn't develop further as a player in later years: I think health problems, depression etc accounted for that. Still as a 'noholdsbarred basic rock guitarist' Rory was always soulful
ConorH725----the song is STONE FOX CHASE by AREA CODE 615. The song was used as the theme tune for a great English rock programme called " THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST". Check out Rory playing 'Walk on hot coals" on this programme. Just as an aside, when music companies pressed the first copy of a record (vinyl) they would get the old grey doormen to listen to tunes once. The ones they could whistle after one listening passed the old grey whistle test .
I was at the Roxy, Los Angeles when Slash came out. Rory's last L.A. show. They did Chuck Berry's Nadine. Rory was really pleased with a huge grin on his face while they traded licks and long extended solos. It was the best. Two elite lead players wailing away.
I have always liked Slash's playing but now have a new found respect for him as a person. Rory was something very special, I learned a lot as a player from Irish Tour and still play a lot of those licks to this day. RIP Rory
mhm slash is pretty down to earth i read his autobiography (its pretty good) but he never mentioned Rory in it. i don't know if he forgot or what, but like i would have loved to have seen a famous guitarist mention Rory. like we all know how capable rory was of being basically the 2nd coming of the beatles or u2,
i agree with both u guys. slash is dwn 2 earth but the only reason i dont like him is that hes soo overrated all his stuff is penatonic but he has gott skill and creativity but i just wouldnt consider himself the best guitarist of all time because he is so big headed. by the way im not tryin to annoy anone im just saying my opinion.
Thanks to ya Slash, the fact you appreciate Rory G — or even heard of him! — shows you're a real musician, not just some bubble gum jump up. Well done! It'll be remembered!
for me tributes that speak about the person's soul are what really matters and he was loved just for the way he was.,....undeniable fabulous talent as well of course!
jimi hendrix was being interviewed once and the reporter goes "what is it like to be the best guitar player in history?" and jimi's response was "i dont know, why dont you ask rory gallagher?"
Rory will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, my guitar hero. His musical heritage will continue to live and reminds us of an outstanding personality and one sweet guitar player.
I have a whole new respect for Slash now, i think he so cool, and is obviously a huge fan of probably the most famous under-rated guitarist ever. R.I.P Rory, from a fellow Irishman
I must admit I never gave Slash too much time myself, but it seems like he's a genuine Rory fan so that changes my opinion. Have to say however I haven't noticed much of Rory's influence in Slash's style.
It was The Old Grey Whistle Test, a show Rory made quite a few appearances on. This one, recorded on Rory's 28th birthday, was shown again in a tribute by the BBC shortly after his death with this intro by Slash. The link just under the vid takes you to a clip from that show.
I think Slash is also a very nice guy ... pretty humble.. a lot of guitar players with less that Slash act like they are mr hot shot. I think its the influence of a legend like Rory.. not only can you learn about music but you also be a better human because of them. Rest in peace Rory..

Slash is so sweet, I didn't expect his vocabulary to be so good (I'm so mean). It's always cool to see one great rock star talk about another and they aren't bad mouthing each other.
