Does anyone know how I can read up more about what black irish means? All my family are Irish and are white and have black hair, I even have an afro, it's always confused me as I know most irish people have brown or ginger hair, I heard it's something to do with spanish or gypsies, dos anyone know?

Black Irish is ment to be an insult to Irish people mostly towards Irish Catholic's cause we were treated like crap when we came to the US. The term is an American slang word not used in Ireland. It can also be used for a person who has dark hair and is Irish like myself. Really we are sort of a mix of Celtic and Viking so are look varies from light hair to dark hair.

Also a study has recently shown that The Irish and Scottish and men from parts of Uk share a common ancestor with the Spanish Basque people's, This could explain the dark hair. look up Irish people in wiki :)

@Ric0908 only the irish and welsh are basque but the rest are germanic are scandavaina im from northen ireland im not basque i have blonde hair and blue eyes so do most of the people i know.
